The Change from Sabbath to Sunday

363- 364 Laodicea council

The major concerns of the Council involved constrictingthe conduct of church members. The Council expressedits decrees in the form of written rules or canons. Amongthe 59 or 60 canons decreed, several aimed at:

Limiting the privileges of neophytes,

Limiting duties of lesser clergy,

Limiting any dealings with anything heretical,

Limiting Judaizing among Christians.

The Change from Sabbath to Sunday

363- 364 Laodicea council

This last one, canon 29, included no more resting on theSabbath (Saturday), but restricted Christians to honouringthe Lord on Sunday even though canon 16 says theGospels are to be read on the Sabbath. The Council ofChalcedon in 451 approved the canon of this council,making these canon ecumenical.

A Conference to relaunch the debate on Sunday protection at

European level will be held on 24 March in the European Parliament inBrussels. It is organised by the MEPs Thomas Mann (EPP, Germany)and Patrizia Toia (S&D, Italy) together with the Konrad-AdenauerFoundation. Several European trade unions, civil society organisationsand Churches support the conference. Lszl Andor, the new EUCommissioner for Employment and Social Affairs will take the floor, as

well as numerous experts and MEPs.
