*BRADEN, CHARLESCitation:The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Charles Braden, Second Lieutenant (Cavalry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism while serving with 7th Cavalry, in action near the mouth of the Big Horn River, Montana, August 11, 1873. Lieutenant Braden, with 20 men, having been attacked by nearly 200 Indians, although severely wounded in the encounter, by his personal gallantry and splendid leadership so inspired his small command as to enable it to repulse the attack by overwhelmingly superior numbers. KELLY, THOMASCitation:The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Thomas Kelly, First Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism while serving with Company E, 3d Infantry, in action in an engagement with hostile Chipewa Indians at Leech Lake, Minnesota, October 5 - 6, 1918. Sergeant Kelly displayed extraordinary heroism in assuming, upon the death of his commanding officer, the command of the skirmishers on the right of the line. With utter disregard for his own personal safety he so gallantly led and directed his men that this action had much to do with the subsequent victorious result of the engagement. KRESS, JOHN ALEXANDERCitation:The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to John Alexander Kress, Captain (Ordnance), U.S. Army, for distinguished conduct in action while serving with Ordnance Department, near Umatilla, Oregon, July 8, 1878. Captain Kress volunteered, though not charged with combat duties, to organized and lead an expedition against bands of hostile Piute-Bannock Indians and to prevent their crossing the Columbia river. Captain Kress seized a river boat and equipped it as a gunboat and by his gallant and fearless leadership in patrolling the Columbia River was successful in five attacks upon the Indians, both on land and from the river; succeeded in capturing and killing their horses, destroyed their boats, arms, and ammunition, and camp equipage, thus frustrating their plan of spreading the war among the Indians to the North. Major Bell, with utter disregard for his personal safety, conducted a bold and daring reconnaissance of the creek in front of Fort San Antonio de Abad held by Spanish forces, and ascertained not only that it was fordable, but the exact width of the ford at the beach, and swimming in the bay to a point from which he could examine the

Lieutenant Means conducted a bold and fearless reconnaissance, during which, regardless of his personal safety, he went beyond the American lines and close to those of the enemy and assisted in examining the ground between the American trenches and Fort San Antonio de Abad held by Spanish forces, thus securing information of the utmost importance in planning the successful attack of August 13, 1898, on Manila, Philippine Islands. ROWAN, ANDREW SUMMERSCitation:The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Andrew Summers Rowan, Captain (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 19th Infantry, in connection with the operations in Cuba in May, 1898. At the outbreak of the Spanish-American

campaign Lieutenant Rowan, under disguise, entered the enemy lines in Oriente, crossed the island of Cuba, and not only succeeded in delivering a message to General Garcia, but secured secret information relative to existing military conditions in that region of such great value that it had an important bearing on the quick ending of the struggle and the complete success of the U.S. Army. Smith, Saddler Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism while serving with 10th Cavalry, in action at San Juan, Cuba, July 1, 1898. Sergeant Smith, with utter disregard for his personal safety and while exposed to heavy fire of shell and small arms from the enemy, deliberately cut the fence or obstruction consisting of four or five strands of barbed wire on top of an almost perpendicular bank, thus enabling Troop A, 10th Cavalry, U.S. Army, to advance and take the position to which ordered. During the attack by two companies of the 14th Infantry on blockhouse No. 14 and adjacent trenches strongly held by insurgent forces, when the commanding officer was mortally wounded, the advance was checked and the troops were partially demoralized in the face of a heavy concentrated fire from the front and both flanks, Lieutenant Miles assumed command, ordered the advance to continue, and went along the line with utter disregard of the hostile fire and urged his men forward. When the detachment of which he was a member was treacherously attacked at night by a hostile Mexican force of approximately five times its strength and the senior line noncommissioned officer of the detachment and two other men killed, Sergeant Smith, although suffering from three wounds, took command, and by his coolness, personal bravery, and qualities of leadership encouraged the detachment and organized its defense that the greatly superior force of Mexicans was driven off and the detachment saved from probable annihilation. Major Tompkins requested and received authority to pursue a superior force of bandits into Mexico. Although wounded early in the pursuit, he carried on a running fight with the bandits for several miles, inflicting heavy losses upon them and stopped the pursuit only when men and horses were exhausted and ammunition was reduced to a few rounds per man. Doug is a popular author, speaker, Webmaster, and historian who has dedicated his life to preserving the stories of our Nation’s greatest heroes. He has single-handedly authored more than 22,000 web pages in his popular site at www.HomeOfHeroes.com, which receives more than 10 million hits each month. A dedicated public servant in his hometown of Pueblo, Colorado; he initiated and organized several programs to introduce Medal of Honor recipients to the community, including a series of school assemblies that brought history and inspiration to more than 32,000 youth in one day of activities. He and his wife Pam’s continuing programs resulted in the Pueblo community bidding for and hosting the Medal of Honor convention in Pueblo in September 2000. Doug is a decorated, two-tour veteran of service in Vietnam where he served as a squad leader in the US Army. In 2001 he was elected to a 2-year term as Chairman of the Colorado State Board of Veterans Affairs.

In 1998 the Congressional Medal of Honor Society recognized the continuing efforts of the Sterner Family when it presented Doug with its prestigious and unique Distinguished Citizens Award. More recent recognitions include the 2003 Southern Colorado Press Club’s annual Excellence in Media award, and a recent recognition by F.B.I. Director Robert Mueller for his Exceptional Service in the Public Interest for his work to protect the integrity of military awards.
