Software Quality: A costly problem across all industries
Software is blamed for more major business problems than any other man-made product.
Poor software quality has become one of the most expensive topics in human history– > $150 billion per year in U.S.– > $500 billion per year worldwide.
Projects cancelled due to poor quality are >15% more costly than successful projects of the same size and type.

Big Bang
• Multiple defects introduced at once• More unknowns – greater risk• More expensive

Approach & Benefits of Continuous Integration Testing
Test components at the API level – reduce delays (no need to wait for UI)
Coordinate dev and test activities within the same milestone
Embed testers on Agile teams to enable integration testing earlier
Testers move from doing testing to building automated test cases as a side effect of their testing, machines do the testing
Tests need to be gated, preventing execution until story is “done”
Two levels of test:– Pre-deployment, unit test and some integration testing– Progressive Deployment: most integration testing, automated UI tests– New manual tests plus repair of automated tests or raising of defects
Benefits:– Earlier and less costly defect detection– Accelerated resolution– Reduction of overhead (defect raising, prioritization) for regression issues– Full approach enables parallel development of components with minimal integration issues

Test Lab costs
• Use of hardware-based virtualization or cloud based resources provides partial savings (20-30%)
• Installation and configuration of software is still very labor intensive• Certain systems cannot leverage hw virtualization, e.g. costly third
party services, mainframe applications, proprietary systems
Cycle Time
• Investment in UI test automation has proven to reduce cycle time for regression testing
• Testing new functions still require to have an environment available to develop test scripts
• The time wasted waiting for a test environment is severely reducing the ability to do proper acceptance testing
Risk
• Addressed through better collaboration between development and testing, better test planning, e.g. using Rational Quality Manager
• Too many “trivial” defects are still found late in the process by Quality Assurance teams
The solution today…

What is Test Application Virtualization?
Enables you to create “a virtual integration environment”:–Virtual Services simulate the behavior of an entire application or system during testing
–Virtual Services can run on commodity hardware, private cloud, public cloud–Each developer and tester can easily have their own test environment–Developer and testers continue to use their existing testing tools (Manual, Web performance, UI test automation)

Developer uses virtual services to unit test code on their workstation
– no elaborate environment
required
Development and Test teams uses virtual services
for early stage advanced testing
The full system or components of the system can be performance tested early in the cycle. Virtual
services can be used when components are not
available
Later in the cycle, final pre-production versions of
services are swapped in as they become available. Final testing is done against real
services

Test Lab costs
• Test lab infrastructure costs can be reduced by up to 90%• Labor involved in setting up test environments can be reduced by 80%
+• Reduced or eliminated the cost of invoking 3rd party systems for non-
production use, fee-based web services
Cycle Time
• Test environments can be configured in minutes vs weeks• Full components and underlying technologies are now automated• More testers can be focused on testing, rather than configuring test
environments• More regression testing can be done independently from the User
Interface, during development
Risk
• Developers have the means to test software earlier at the Service/API level
• Large teams working on different parts of an application or system can effectively do parallel development by virtualizing different parts of the system
• Points of failure are managed and contained
Green Hat is a game changer for Quality Management

Prospecting Basics: What to Look For
Environment & Compelling Events:– Complex, heterogeneous environments– Agile requirements and need to do integration testing earlier– High pressure on release dates due to competitive demands– High dependency on web applications – for revenue or customer/citizen services support– Middleware upgrade projects– Test labs – how many stood up today?
Who cares & why?– CIO, CTO, VP Dev/Ops, CFO, Government Agency leadership (budget authority)– Enterprise Architects, SOA Governance (understand landscape of systems, integrations that need
testing)– Operations & QA Management (feel the pain of provisioning test environments or meeting
release quality standards)
30
IBM Software Worldwide Channels
Qualification: Understand customer’s current environment
What is the architecture? (e.g. IBM WebSphere and/or WebSphere Portal, MQSeries, TIBCO & WebMethods)
– Size of composite systems that will be the focus of testing > how may integrations?> how many services?> how many applications?
What is the current level of investment in the following:– WebSphere (PVUs)– WebSphere Portal (PVUs)– WebSphere MQ (PVUs)– Rational (Licenses/Seats and Products)– Competitors (e.g. HP/Mercury, Tibco, Software AG (webMethods), Open Source, others)
31
IBM Software Worldwide Channels
Conversation Starters
How do you currently approach the testing for SOA, BPM and other complex integrated systems?
How often are release dates slipping or quality issues arising? What kinds of issues are most important?
Are you doing agile testing?
Do you need to request extra project funding for unplanned additional testing?
How long is testing taking to complete? Is this impacting project timelines?
Are dependencies on third party applications or unavailable systems from other teams delaying your project?
Would you like to run what-if scenarios during performance & functional testing?– If so, then how would this benefit the project?
How much time do your teams (e.g. development or operations) spend trying to build their own simulation systems and databases?
Is your team frustrated by perceived bottlenecks with creation and maintenance of stubs for testing?– If so, please describe
32
IBM Software Worldwide Channels
Objection Handling
Objection: We already use HP for testing, so we are set.
Response: The Green Hat solution extends HP Quality Center to add middleware testing, something that is not available within HP. This added capability can really help to effectively develop and test the middleware. Green hat can test applications across multiple middleware platforms including TIBCO BusinessWorks, Software AG webMethods, & of course is optimized for IBM environments like MQ.
Objection: We have an in house tool that already does this.
Response: We have worked with customers who after evaluation, have found that their in-house solution did not scale effectively to their need, or was not very cost effective nor efficient. Does the in house solution scale to your needs? Does it test in the message layer effectively? As the number of releases continues to increase, does your solution support it in a timely matter?
Objection: My development writes their own test stubs/test harnesses.
Response: Are you working to shorten delivery cycle? Would it help if developers didn’t have to create scripts, and support testing teams but focused on building solutions with an automated test bed already in place? The IBM Rational virtualization solution helped customers achieve 30% increase in development productivity, would you see similar results with a test automation solution within your complex heterogeneous reality? Another customer was able to reduce testing time by 50%, saving $800K over 3 years.
Objection: No budget
Response: How much is it costing you to manually write scripts? We have a customer that spent 500K dollars on building manual scripts per release. As they were moving to increase their release cycle (from 2 to 4) they did not want to spend $2 Million per year on testing middleware alone. Our solution proved to effectively test MQ and other middleware packages, at a much lower cost than that!

IBM Software Worldwide Channels
Prospecting: Opportunities to leverage the install base
HP Augmentation and Ultimate Displacement– Competitive advantages: breadth, mainframe, heterogeneous– No coding
RFT install base– Trade up to RTW to:
• Automate tests at a different level, earlier in the lifecycle• Easier maintenance of performance tests
RPT install base– Trade up to RTW and RPTS:
• Re-use functional tests for performance testing, easier maintenance, increased resilience• Reduce dependency on specialist skills, improve productivity
RFT and RPT:– Trade up to RTW and RTVS:
• Reduce environmental dependencies, hardware costs, skills• Test earlier and more often
Websphere MQ Install base

Competitive Information
Green Hat strengths for positioning against competition – Green Hat gets high marks for ease of learning and use– It is methodology agnostic, working with any development or testing approach– Green Hat currently supports 70+ protocols out of the box, has broad and superior
support for message formats and industry domains (FSS, B2B, Healthcare and others) without extensive customization
– Green Hat middleware support with features for WebSphere MQ, TIBCO ActiveMatrix, Software AG webMethods, SAP and more
– Endpoints can be recorded and virtualized dynamically without modifying the middleware configuration for the apps under test
– Low TCO drivers: • Green Hat setup/configuration provides quick time to productivity/value• Used across the stages of lifecycle (development, testing, operation/production, etc.) and roles on
team (solution architect, developer, programmer/analyst, tester, etc,)• Customers can purchase ONE solution which will support a wide array of protocols and platforms• Facilitates continuous integration testing, reusability of tests and integration with other lifecycle
products
