Dear Friends, And to all Readers! This is the festive season in India and indeed a long one-begins with Ganesh Chaturthi in August and then goes on till Sankranthi in the January if we go by the Gregorian Calendar. Probably that is why India is called, ‘A Land of Festivals’. Celebrations can also encompass a lot of other things- Celebrations for Life itself! Celebrations of Love or Celebration of Work, Celebration of Labour, Celebration of Cleanliness and even Celebrating Childhood… I could have a whole list of them. As a school, and as parents, celebrating childhood in all its glory is very important. Would celebrating childhood be allowing children to live life the way they want to live or helping children to learn to strike a balance between whatever they do. We often declare celebrating childhood by being ‘child centric’. What is child centric? This is a question that often haunts me! A little bit of research in both scholarly and non-scholarly areas gave me varied explanations. Besides many other important things that included providing a safe, secure and caring environment to the children, it should also prepare children to be responsible and productive citizens of the civil society be it home or school and this was the description of child centricity. Dear Friends,

And to all Readers!

This is the festive season in India and indeed a long one-begins with Ganesh Chaturthi in August and then goes on till Sankranthi in the January if we go by the Gregorian Calendar. Probably that is why India is called, ‘A Land of Festivals’. Celebrations can also encompass a lot of other things-Celebrations for Life itself!

The path to be traversed is not easy, striking a balance is not simple, and challenges are many! School is a community by itself, comprising of not just the students and teachers but all the people who are involved with the school, each of them. Taking all of them together and not losing sight of both the short term and long term goals is a herculean task. Our heartfelt thanks to all our stakeholders for supporting us through and through! Our continued request to all of you to keep supporting us in all ways-starting from being regular to school, maintaining discipline in all areas, practicing the core values of the school-ETHICS to preparing and participating in all school Programmes.

In one of regular school days, I came to know about this visit. Marini madam asked me to prepare a patriotic song in Telugu. She also suggested me the song, ‘Swathantra Bharat Janani.’ Initially, I did not know the song. But later when I listened to it on internet with my mom, I liked it very much. Since I loved it, I learnt it quite fast. Later I was so excited to go to Indus Universal School as I had never been to other schools for solo singing competition. Other senior students were also taking part in different categories. I was very curious to go to Indus School. That was on a Saturday. In the morning, as per the schedule, my mom dropped me at Nagole petrol pump. The school bus was waiting from me. It was a long journey of one hour. I sat with my friend Hasika in the bus. She is a very nice girl and my family likes her too. When we reached Indus school, the senior students welcomed us courteously. Then they took us to the event venue. It was a big air-conditioned hall and we had to wait for a long time for our event there. Honestly speaking, I felt so cold that I had to go out in between to warm up in the sunlight. During lunch time, they took us to their canteen. That was very clean and beautiful. I wish our Unicent school to have one like that. Finally, after lunch my turn came. I tried my best to sing well. Then we returned.Overall, I like the nice ambience of that school, especially the fountain at the entrance. I know it is difficult to have a fountain in our school since it is located on a hill. Though we haven’t received any prize, it was indeed a memorable experience. Later I realized and was told by my mom that my singing effort might not be good enough to win a prize. But I’m sure, with this experience, I will perform better to win prize for my school in future.

In August, 2016, we, the students of classes VIII, IX and X went to K-Circle Quiz competition, which was held at Little Flower School, Abids. We were given an answer sheet and were asked to answer 30 questions. Many schools participated in this quiz. It was a quiz which was to be done in pairs. We were asked questions visually. Over 120 pairs participated and from those pairs, 8 pairs were to go to the next level. We had been taught winning or losing is not important, but that day I felt we could have gone to the next level.

I participated in St. Peter’s Chess Fest which was a two day competition. It was held at St. Peter’s Public School on July 28th and 29th. I was a participant from senior group. Our team consisted of 4 members. Through this competition we learnt how the chess tournaments are held. It also helped us in gaining more experience. This was a great chance to prove our skills. Total 15 schools participated and we won the 4th place.

When I changed my school, I thought I would never be able to make myself as a topper since the pattern of teaching is different to my previous school, where state syllabus is taught. But one incident changed my thoughts. It was Spell Bee. In Spell Bee, two rounds were there. One was preliminary, in which we had to write the words dictated by our respective English teacher. Those who were qualified in the preliminary round, were selected for the final round. I never thought that I would be selected for the final round, but I was selected. I felt so happy and nervous. I thought it was a dream, but it was real. In the finals, we had to spell the words, dictated by the concerned teachers. I stood first in the competition and my joy knew no bounds, can’t be expressed in words.

“While most are dreaming of success, winners wake-up and work hard to achieve it.” On 23rd July 2016, we went to Little Flower School to participate in Lit Fiesta-2016. They had conducted different competitions related to literary components like: Essay Writing, Elocution and Debate. As soon as we reached there, we found other school students who came to participate. They allotted us different room numbers and also given different codes. Sreyas Chandak of class VII won the third prize in Essay Writing under pre-seniors. Everyone is a winner, as they were the students who were selected from many schools. “Winners are not people who never fail, but people never quit.” No matter whether we get victory or defeat, participation is more important. We need to enhance our participation to get victory for the next attempt. “Participation is more important than Winning,” was the message given by the principle of Little Flower School.

Organized by yoga association of RR district. Held at: Saroonagar on 6th August, 2016.Around of twenty schools participated in the competition. From our school five students had participated.Master Venkat Reddy secured bronze medal under 8-11 category and got selected for State Level Yoga competition

The students of Unicent went for a Science Symposium which was organized by Jadavpur University Alumni Association IICT(Indian Institute of Chemical Technology). The Jadavpur university is a centre of excellence, located in the southern part of Kolkata. This year, Dr. Imran Siddqui had spoken about his father Dr. Obaid Siddqui, a national research professor and the founder director of Tata Institute of Fundamantal Research National Centre for Biological Sciences. Mr. Yerendla Karunakar Reddy gave a presentation on ‘weather forecasting’ and Dr. Tapash Kumar Nandy gave a presentation on ‘Metalic Material and Their Engineering Application.’ In the end, Mr. Suyash Dake demonstrated ‘Scientific Experienments.’ Many schools took part in this symposium. This 7th Symposium was organized on 6th August, 2016. The scientists also explained to us that Science is not boring; it is interesting and can be fun too…

On 31st July, 2016, we were taken to NSSI Active Farm School, where we were taught the essentials of farming and crop production. There was an instructor who taught us each and every thing about agriculture in an innovative and attractive way, which we enjoyed thoroughly. We were first taught to increase soil fertility and its absorption by adding coconut coir and cow dung manure. After that, we went to the field, where we had to stamp the clay soil to increase its penetration level and then put paddy in it. Then, we were given a small patch of land where we had ploughed with sickles and added manure to it. We then watered all the plants over there which had a mixture of clove, ginger,

We went on a field trip to Active Farm. We learnt there that all the food items are grown by the farmers and they don’t come from the market directly. When we went there, I understood that farmers work very hard and that work can’t be done easily. We enjoyed a lot there. We fed the animals such as buffaloes, cows, birds, goats and other domestic animals. We touched all the animals. Rabbit was very smooth. The eyes of the rabbit were red. We took active part in the activities of feeding, pouring water to the plants, adding pesticides and so on. We spent the whole day there.

We, class III students, went to the field trip to Dinosaurium with our class teacher Ms. Padmaja and Hindi teacher Ms. Sujatha. Here we saw a rare and magnificient fossil of the dinosaur, Kotasaurus belonging to the lower Jurrasic age about 160 million years. It is one of the finest specimens anywhere in the world. It measures about fourteen metres in length and over five metres in height. We enjoyed seeing and learning about the Dinosaurus.

As a part of field trips on ‘Responsible Tourism’, we, the students of Unicent School, Nagole , visited the famous Arts College in Osmania University on 25st of July 2016. We have seen different buildings for each department in the campus, such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Bio-Chemistry, Bio-Physics, Zoology, Botany and many more. And also found different hostels for non-local girls and boys who have come for their higher education. We came to know about the history of Osmania University. It was named after its founder, Nawab Osman Ali Khan, the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad who rather through a Farman or Royal Charter, brought the University into existence in 1918. It is the seventh oldest in the Country and third oldest in South India. Arts College was constructed in 1965. The University is located in the heart of the city. This University has a beautiful and rich greenery landscape gardens. It’s a wonderful experience for all of us.

As a part of field trips, we, the students of Unicent School, Nagole, visited the famous Salarjung Museum on 21st of June 2016. There were many galleries related to Indian Sculpture, Arms & Armory, Ivory, Egyptian, Syrian, Chinese and Japanese artifacts, Carpets etc. We came to know about the history of India and also the history of Salarjung. The articles and the relics were fascinating, showing

mint and jaggary. We were shown how cream is extracted from milk and how the upper layer of rice is removed. We were also taken to animals’ farm, where we fed the dogs, ducks, goats, sheep and other domestic animals. Overall, it was truly a memorable and unforgettable experience for us which educated us with many new things and increased in us the sensitivity towards the nature.

culture and skill of the people of that time. We also came to know that the museum was renovated in 2003. It is one of the most popular museums in the world. That day being International Yoga Day, we got to participate in a session on meditation organised by the Musuem. It was a maze of another time in which we were lost. The trip was a good experience and we brought back tons of knowledge with us.

On 15th July, 2016 we went to Anand Nagar cross road to perform a street play on the topic ‘Importance of Girl Child.’ We went there at 11 before noon. Four people even took pictures and videos of our play. The street play was to spread awareness among the people about the difficulties that the girls are facing and the importance of the girl child. This experience really helped us to understand the importance of a girl child. As future generations, we will strive to make sure that every girl is educated and stand up against the practices going against them.

First we decorated our school with balloons as we wanted to celebrate the Founder’s Day. First we had morning assembly. There was a song. After that, the four houses in our school performed dramas. They were very nice. Topaz house won the first prize and Ruby house won the 2nd and Sapphire 3rd. Then we had show & tell competition. In this, Ruby house won the 1st prize, Emerald 2nd and Sapphire 3rd. Show & Tell competition was for the children 1st & 2nd classes. Many principals attended from other schools.

We all, the students of Unicent School, have participated in many skits and role plays. Unicent students have performed skits on many concepts like Ganesh Chaturthi, Janmasthami, Christmas, Sankranthi, Yoga Day and so on. Students performed skits to make people understand the concept more clearly. Skits and dramas are very useful to us. They, in turn, give information in a detailed manner about a specific concept. Students and the audience indeed understand the concept and enjoy the performances. Not only skits, dance, music and other art forms are also great instruments of peace and entertainment. Dance is a traditional part of the programmes. It also contains schemes through which everyone enjoys. Music is such through which beauty, harmony are seen. People enjoy singing. That is it all what we wanted the audience to enjoy. We also find the ways to entertain the audience in our assemblies.

It is believed that “Lord Ganesha removes all obstacles and hindrance from our life.”Unicent School, Nagole, celebrated Ganesh Chaturthi in a

ndwonderful way on 2 September, 2016. On that day, the special assembly, conducted by Bhagat Singh House, had depicted about the birth of Lord Ganesh and how he got the elephant head. One of our teachers gave information about why Lord Ganesh had chosen Musheka as his vehicle. Later it was followed by a dance performce by the students on “Eka dantaya, vakrathunday gowri tanaya dheemahi, gajeshanaya faala chandraya sri ganeshaya dheemahi”

“A teacher presents the past, reveals the present and creates the future.”Unicent School, Nagole, celebrated Teachers’ Day in a

rd grandiose way on 3 September, 2016. On that day the programme was started by lighting the lamp infront of Lord Ganesh by our Principal Mrs. Rachna Bhattacharjee to mark the beginning of the Ganesh Festival. Then we continued with regular morning assembly which was conducted by class IX students; followed by the felicitation of teachers by giving a rose and a pen symbolic of love and knowledge. Later class X conducted lemon and spoon game for teachers. We also had a variety programme with songs and dances. It was very entertaining for all of us. We all enjoyed.

In the month of July and August, the Intra Mural Unicent Competitions were held. The word ‘intra mural’ comes from Latin which means ‘inside the wall.’ All the four branches of Unicent met at Unicent Kompally branch for the literary competitions. The literary competition included public speeches, inspirational speeches, show and tell, poster making, poem recitation and so on. The dignitaries and the branches were welcomed with a lot of zeal and fervor. Students participated enthusiastically and with sportsmanship. It was a tough decision for the judges when everyone performed very well. Many students won prizes and brought laurels to their school. It was as Baron de Cubertin, the father of modern Olympics said, “Participation is more important than winning!”

It was a wornderful meet of our school branches. All the branches met at our new branch Bachupally. We started with Guard of Honour and the guest declared the games open. We had reces first(running and relay). The time was not sufficient as it was time for lunch and also it suddenly began to rain. In the meanwhile we had our lunch. Once the rain stopped, we were back in the ground and started playing Kho-kho and volleyball(for IX & X). The next event was short-put for the classes VII to X. After that the competitions ended. Then we had Prize Distribution ceremony along with cultural activities. Unicent Kompally won the Sports Cup.

On 6th August, 2016, Sports Competitions were held in Bachupally. I participated in carroms with my partner, Gopichand. We began very well scoring many points, but later we made several mistakes and lost lead to our opponents. This experience taught us not to be over confident. I tried my best to win and I will do better the next time.

Inter Unicent Carroms’ Competition

The IUC Fine Arts Competition was conducted on 5th August in Unicent School, Nagole. The theme for the fine arts competition was ‘Chilhood.’ The fine arts competition included dance, music, artificial jewellary, clay molding, poster making and so on. All our Unicent branches gathered in our Nagole campus. The programme began with prayer and regular assembly. After the assembly, there was a song. Our principal gave a speech. Our 10th class boys and girls performed a street play. The assembly ended with our National Anthem. After the assembly, all the participants went to the places allotted to them. They all showed their best and gave a tough competition to their competitors. At the end, we had Prize Distribution ceremony, in which many students won prizes. It was a wonderful show of Unicent Schools to bring out the best from students in fine arts.

TEACHERS’ CORNER

Experiential learning is an active learning. Learning is an ongoing process which begins right from the time we are born. Schooling plays a major role because it provides a healthy environment to think, explore and gather knowledge. Thus the emphasis is to have a non-threatening atmosphere in school, especially in the classroom so that the social and emotional development of the student can be observed and improved. We in Unicent create an environment for experiential learning which improves active learning. This can be done through involving and encouraging students to participate in various academic and non-academic activities like IHC, assembly presentation, special assemblies and so on. As part of academics, many activities, FA-projects, field trips help them to explore and learn. Its main aim is to develop self confidence, communication skills, creative presentation, how to work as a team and learn problem solving skills. This leads to the overall development of the students. Schools will undeniably do better if parents and teachers become partners in education. Let us join our hands to help our children to become productive citizens of this great country.

Ramanujan Math Education Centre had conducted Math workshop for classes I to X teachers at Nampally on 2nd and 3rd August 2016. Around 40 teachers attended the workshop from different schools. The workshop was about how and what type of activities can be conducted to teach the concepts like Addition, subtractions, Tens and ones etc., for the better understanding. The resource person Mr. T. B. Bose laid emphasis on the use of manipulatives while teaching. We were made aware of different manipulatives and their use. The most interesting learning experience was that we can include our old traditional games to teach the concepts to make learning easier for the child. One of the old traditional games he introduced in the workshop was Pallankuzhi, played by women in their leisure time in Tamilnadu. This game can be used to teach multiplication and diversion. It was a visit to Miyapur, one of the Unicent School

branches. I chiefly focused on Classroom Management which also included the way the students assemble for the prayer and dispersal of the students after the school. I observed how to deliver the notes on three letter words in an easy way. I found the technique/method of delivering the notes was same compared to our branch, it means instructing the students to write along with the teacher. Teacher was moving around in the classroom and at the same time corrected the children. It is believed that preschool children are a little matured and they follow whatever the teacher says in a very honest way. If the teacher asks them to recite a rhyme or poems or to do oral drilling of number, letters, words etc, they do with great pleasure. It was a learning experience for me during my induction.

The session was a group discussion which included three activities. Each one of us was asked to share our views. There were about 30 teachers minimum of 2 teachers from a school. Activity 1: We were to sit in a circle and it was an activity to energize us. We can say warm-up activity. Mind - body coordination was tested through this activity. We need to put our right index finger forward and our left palm on the index finger of the person next to us. On the count of 3, we need to save our index finger; at the same time grab the index finger of the person next to us.Activity 2: (Spit - Splat) This game is also played with players standing in a circular pattern, with Don at the centre. Don would shoot at a person and say split. The person whom she/he is shooting at, should save themselves by bending down and the persons on either side of him/her say splat facing each other. Whoever says it second, will be out of the game. (I was the winner)After this activity, we had introduction of each one of us in a different way. They gave us stick notes and asked us to write our name, school, classes we handle and our self representation through a picture. We were also asked to write what is ‘Inclusion’ according to us.Activity 3: She narrated a story of two best friends. From this she wanted to judge on how we would handle a situation. There was a categorization as sun, moon and stars based upon our reaction or the way we came to the conclusion. The essence of the session was to sensitise the teachers about how to handle different kind of children in the class room.
