THE SUBJECT AREAS: All classes cover district-mandated curriculum, while increasing the rigor of the material and emphasizing reading and math applications.

Foreign Language: Spanish—All students take Introduction to Spanish (6th Grade); Spanish 1A (7th Grade); Spanish 1B (8th Grade). This should prepare the student to be placed in Spanish 2 in high school.

Language Arts: literature, grammar, vocabulary, the writing process, oral language, and research

Mathematics: Math 6 Plus; Math 7 Plus; Algebra 1; Geometry

Sciences: Earth, Space, Physical, and Life Science

Social Studies: Ancient Civilization (6th Grade); Geography and Kansas History (7th Grade); US History (8th Grade).

Exploratory Subjects: Art and Design; AVID; Band; Orchestra; Physical Education; Technology; and Vocal Music

What is Pre-IB? Robinson Middle School has been the site for the Pre-International Baccalaureate Program since November 1994. The PIB program is a

rigorous academic program of study that emphasizes the relationship of the student with the community and the world. It is designed for

intrinsically motivated students who prefer a more demanding curriculum including foreign language, in-depth research, and advanced

math, science, social studies, and language arts.

GPA

Students will maintain the required grade point averages: 2.7 for sixth grade, 2.75 for seventh

grade, and 3.00 for eighth grade.

Community Service

Students give back to the community as they develop a deeper appreciation for society and a better understanding of their roles in society. Per

year requirements begin at 15 hours in sixth grade and increase to 20 hours in seventh

grade, then 25 hours in eighth grade.

Personal Project

Students focus their activities on an annual project that develops research skills and

individual expression. Each year, personal project expectations are expanded.

We are pleased you are interested in participating in the Pre-IB Program. The following steps will help you complete the process to apply for the Pre-IB Program. Steps 1-4 are required in the application process; steps 5-6 are optional. 1. Complete the Pre-International Baccalaureate Program application. Complete online or send the forms to Robinson Middle School by Monday, February 5, 2018, attention: Missy Congdon.

Pre-IB Program Agreement (Form 2)

Parents complete one of the Teacher & Parent/Guardian Evaluation Form (Form 3) 2. Parents are responsible for getting the following four items of information (Form 4) to Robinson Middle School by Monday,

February 5, 2018, but not before semester grades are issued:

A copy of the student’s 3rd, 4th and 5th grade report card

Attendance records

FastBridge: Math and Reading (or SRI - Scholastic Reading Inventory scores)

A copy of the student’s most recent Reading and Math State Assessment scores 3. Request two teacher evaluations (Form 3), one of which must be student’s current math and/or language arts teacher; the

other should be from either the 4th or 5th grade. The teachers must send the evaluation forms directly to Robinson Middle School by Monday, February 5, 2018, attention: Missy Congdon.

Please park on Bleckley, enter through the courtyard doors (door #25), and report to the auditorium. The doors into the building from the south parking lot will be locked.

5. Participate in an optional Informational Student/Parent Meeting at Robinson Middle School on Thursday, January 18, 2018, or Tuesday, January 30, 2018, from 6:00 – 7:00 pm in the Robinson Performance Auditorium.

6. Participate in an optional Shadow/Visitation days for the Pre-IB Program will January 23, 25, 30, or February 1, 2018 (Tuesday, Thursday, Tuesday, Thursday). We will offer two options for visitation on these days. Please call the office at 973-8600 to schedule your time at least 24 hours in advance; times fill quickly.

1. A 20-minute tour of Robinson

Parents, with or without their students, may tour the building with a Pre-IB student between the hours of 8:30 – 10:00 on these days.

Please park in the main parking lot south of the building or on the west side of Bleckley and report to the office, and we will have a student give you a tour.

OR 2. Shadow a current Pre-IB student at Robinson

Students may attend class for part of the school day from o Current 5th Graders from 8:00 – 9:25. o Current 6th and 7th Graders from 9:30 – 11:00.

If you choose this option, please call the office to schedule your student for a day.

On that day, park in the parking lot south of the building or on the west side of Bleckley and have your student report to the cafeteria foyer, and we will have a Pre-IB student for them to shadow. You may pick up your child from the cafeteria foyer after the visitation time.

All above-mentioned items can be found in this Pre-IB Program application packet or online at http://www.usd259.org/robinson/pib. Applicants will be notified as to whether or not they have been accepted in a letter that will be mailed on March 16, 2018. The number of 7th and 8th grade openings will not be determined until the end of the school year; therefore, these applicants will not be notified until that time.

The Pre-IB Program is a comprehensive program with a rigorous liberal arts curriculum designed for the

academically-focused student. For a student to be successful, it is imperative that he/she be a consistent, dedicated

learner. Therefore, the Pre-IB staff requires the agreement of the following commitments:

1. I will actively participate in class daily by being prepared, listening effectively, offering relevant comments,

and taking notes. In short, I agree to meet the expectations set forth for each course.

2. I will work seriously to improve my academic and organizational skills.

3. I will schedule medical appointments outside the school day when possible and trips for recreation during

school holidays, recognizing that daily attendance is crucial to success.

4. I will submit quality work in a timely fashion, including sending work to school if I have an "excused absence".

This includes accepting responsibility for getting work in on time, completing tasks, and completing make-up

work on-time.

5. I will demonstrate the highest degree of academic integrity. I understand that direct or indirect cheating

(plagiarism) can be grounds for immediate removal from the program.

6. I will follow all rules of Robinson Middle School as outlined in the student handbook. I will demonstrate the

highest degree of behavior. I understand that continued incidents of inappropriate behavior or suspensions

from school can be grounds for immediate removal from the program.

7. I will fulfill all community service requirements: 6th grade: 15 Hours; 7th grade: 20 Hours; 8th grade: 25 hours

(The following number of hours need to be completed by the first Friday in December: 6th grade: 10 Hours;
