History of Acceleration at IVC

• In Fall 2012, we began a yearlong training program with the California Acceleration Project, a 3CSN community of practice.

• We piloted two sections of EXP 389 in Fall 2012 and Spring 2013

• This fall, we expanded to 5 sections and, with BSI funding, began a yearlong training program at IVC for current instructors, both full-time and adjunct, to ensure consistency and success across the sections.

California Acceleration Project’s Three Principles of Acceleration

• Backwards Design Students in pre-college courses should complete the same kinds of assignments as students in college-level courses with increased support.

• Just-In-Time Remediation As students complete college-level assignments, instructors help students as needed in a workshop-style environment.

• Support for Student’s Affective Needs Instructors should help students through emotional or psychological barriers that block learning and have nothing to do with their cognitive ability.

Presentation Notes
WR 301 Cohorts preparation rate: Fall 2012 (207/384) & Spring 2012 (123/248) = 330/632 = 52.2% EXP 389—Fall 12 or Spring 13: 82.1% (9 students had to take the class twice)
Page 9: Pre-College Writing: Acceleration at IVC

Acceleration at IVC • Of the 36 students who passed EXP 389 in Fall

2012 and then enrolled in WR 1, 91.7% passed. – 30.6% earned As – 33.3% earned Bs – 27.8% earned Cs

• Of the 28 students who passed EXP in Spring 2013 and enrolled in WR 1, 71.4% passed WR 1

• General WR 1 pass rate for 2012-13: 85.1%

Presentation Notes
WR 301 to passing WR 1 (Fall 12 to Fall 2013): 28.4% throughput rate (109/384) WR 301 to passing WR 1 (Spring 12 to Fall 2013): 43.5% throughput rate (108/248) Overall comparable WR 301 throughput rate: 34.3% throughput rate (217/632) EXP 389 to passing WR 1 (Fall 12-Fall 13): 67.3% throughput rate (33/49) EXP 389 to passing WR 1 (Spring 13-Fall 13): 43.4% throughput rate (20/46) Overall EXP 389 throughput rate: 55.8% throughput rate (53/95) Students in EXP have achieved this in one less year than students in WR 301, so we are not only improving pass rates, but we are also saving students time and money.

IVC’s Program Shared Nationwide • Representatives of IVC have been asked to share our curriculum

and program in venues across the state and nation: – Columbia University’s Community College Research Center’s

Scaling Innovations Convening – The 5th Annual National Conference on Acceleration in

Developmental Education in Baltimore – 2013 On Course National Conference—returning presenters

in 2014 – IVC students and instructors featured on CAP website and

IVC’s curriculum has been used as a sample curriculum for CAP schools

ESL Pathways to Student Success • New advanced curriculum that parallels the

English department’s basic skills writing courses provides a clear path to WR 1

• ESL sequence offers students an adaptable progression to better meet individual needs

• Offers students the possibility to “accelerate” in second language learning

ESL flexible sequence • Language is a skill not a subject; it takes

time

• Students acquire English at different rates depending on their motivation, exposure to English, and other factors

• Adaptable sequence vs. traditional lock-step sequence

ESL Pathways to Student Success • Academic English is the focus for intermediate

and advanced levels • As the cognitive demands of college learning

increase, so will the need for complex linguistic development and support for English language leaners

• New language lab conferences for one on one supplemental ESL writing instruction
