Do not then forget the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery: who guided you through this vast and dreadful wilderness, a land of fiery serpents, scorpions, thirst; who in this waterless place brought you water from the hardest rock; who in this wilderness fed you with manna that your fathers had not known.PSALM R. Praying at Home GOD’S WORD FIRST READING

From the book of Deuteronomy Moses said to the people: ‘Remember how the Lord your God led you for forty years in the wilderness, to humble you, to test you and know your inmost heart – whether you would keep his commandments or not. He humbled you, he made you feel hunger, he fed you with manna which neither you nor your fathers had known, to make you understand that man does not live on bread alone but that man lives on everything that comes from the mouth of the Lord. ‘Do not then forget the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery: who guided you through this vast and dreadful wilderness, a land of fiery serpents, scorpions, thirst; who in this waterless place brought you water from the hardest rock; who in this wilderness fed you with manna that your fathers had not known.’

PSALM

R. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem. O praise the Lord, Jerusalem! Zion, praise your God! He has strengthened the bars of your gates, he has blessed the children within you. R.

He has established peace on your borders, he feeds you with finest wheat. He sends out his word to the earth and swiftly runs his command. R. He makes his word known to Jacob, to Israel his laws and decrees. He has not dealt thus with other nations; he has not taught them his decrees. R.

SECOND READING

St Paul to the Corinthians 1 The blessing-cup that we bless is a communion with the blood of Christ, and the bread that we break is a communion with the body of Christ. The fact that there is only one loaf means that, though there are many of us, we form a single body because we all have a share in this one loaf.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Alleluia, alleluia! I am the living bread from heaven, says the Lord; whoever eats this bread will live for ever. Alleluia!

GOSPEL

From the Gospel of John Jesus said to the Jews: ‘I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I shall give is my flesh, for the life of the world.’ Then the Jews started arguing with one another: ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’ they said. Jesus replied: ‘I tell you most solemnly, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you will not have life in you. Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life, and I shall raise him up on the last day.

For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in him. As I, who am sent by the living Father, myself draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me will draw life from me. This is the bread come down from heaven; not like the bread our ancestors ate: they are dead, but anyone who eats this bread will live for ever.’

INTERCESSIONS

For the Church – that those who eat and drink the Body and Blood of Christ will strive to overcome divisions and live in greater unity. Lord, in your mercy….. Hear our prayer.

For nations whose peoples are diminished by famine – that we learn to act as an international global community sharing resources and ensuring that the poorest of nations have enough food for all. Lord, in your mercy...

For children whose world is shaped by hunger – that their hunger will be satisfied with nourishing food and that they will be able to live healthy and meaningful lives. Lord, in your mercy...

For refugee camps encountering Covid 19 – that people will not be left to suffer and die alone, that there will be medical support, healing and an end to this pandemic. Lord, in your mercy…

For the sick – that they may find strength and courage in the cross of Christ and discover the redemptive value of their

suffering. Lord, in your mercy...

For all those who have shared the Bread of Life and Cup of Salvation – that they may see God face to face in the kingdom of heaven. We remember also … Lord, in your mercy…

PRAYER IN THIS CRISIS

Almighty and all-merciful God, lover of the human race, healer of all our wounds, in whom there is no shadow of death, save us in this time of crisis; grant wisdom and courage to our leaders; watch over all medical people as they tend the sick and work for a cure; stir in us a sense of solidarity beyond all isolation; if our doors are closed, let our hearts be open. By the power of your love destroy the virus of fear, that hope may never die and the light of Easter, the triumph of life, may shine upon us and the whole world. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Holy Mary, health of the sick, pray for us. St Joseph, guardian of us all, pray for us.

SANCTIFYING SUNDAY

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

REFLECT FIRST READING

Moses reminds the Israelites of how God’s miraculous gifts of manna (bread) and water (early images of the Eucharist) helped them through their trials and tribulations. How would you explain to a friend how the Eucharist sustains you through difficult times?

SECOND READING

Paul spoke of how the believers in Corinth celebrating the Eucharist were engaged in an act of “participation” in the Body and Blood of Christ. How do you imagine the Corinthians reacting to this description?

GOSPEL READING

We hear in today’s Gospel the closing remarks from Jesus’ Bread of Life discourse. As a Christian who believes in the Eucharist, how would you answer the Jews’ original question: “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

Adam’s Ribs One weekend at Sunday School, they were teaching how God created everything, including human beings. Little Johnny seemed especially intent when they told him how Eve was created out of one of Adam’s ribs. Later in the week his mother noticed him lying down as though he were ill, and asked him, “Johnny, what is the matter?” “I have pain in my side,” Johnny responded. “I think I’m going to have a wife.”

The Pastor’s Pen It is so wonderful to be able to reopen our churches, even under the strict conditions imposed on us by our Industry Plan. I know that you will be very disappointed not to be able to hear me sing along to the hymns :( Thankfully, if you come to a weekday Mass, you will still have that blessed opportunity. Please take special note of the information found in the last two pages. This is the FOURTH version of our COVIDsafe information sheet! It’s been like trying to run on quicksand, with things changing every week. Strangely, funerals are still limited to 50 people until 10 July. I hope that the explanation about breaking our churches into sections of twenty is clear? It should become abundantly clear after a couple of weeks of actually implementing it. Naturally, we have no idea how long things will continue like this—most likely, there will be no change under the third stage of QLD’s roadmap. So, we probably can’t look for anything different until at least the end of July or mid-August. Mind you, every time that I’ve estimated a date, things have changed within 24 hours :) Again, I am so very grateful to our staff. Beth has been incredible in producing posters, filling cleaning bottles, and ensuring that everything is in the right place. Thanks also to

Marcella and Julie for your huge efforts, which have been above and beyond the call of duty. This week, I have meetings with confirmation parents about restarting our sacramental program. We will be unable to gather for instructions, so it will be up to parents/guardians/grandparents to prepare their children for the sacrament at home. We will then only be able to have 10 families at a time for the celebration itself. We should then be able to begin First Communion preparation according to our original schedule. Not sure yet how we will actually celebrate the Masses. That all depends on where we are with regulations in August. To finish on the highest of notes: Fr Vinoj was appointed here for one year as part of his induction to Australian Church life, ending 31 July. Last week, the Bishop asked him if he would be happy to extend his time here. His response was an immediate YES. I could not be more delighted. Fr Vinoj has been a wonderful member of our pastoral team and he is a pleasure to live with. I know that he is enjoying his time here in our district immensely—everything is “beautiful”! Thank you Fr V for accepting the invitation to continue working in the Lord’s harvest here in the Hinchinbrook Shire. God bless,

“Always laugh when you can. It is cheap medicine.” —Lord Byron
