Prayers to the Holy Spirit

Prayer to the Holy Spirit composed by St Josemaria Escriva in 1934

Come, O Holy Spirit! Enlighten my mind to know your commandments; strengthen my heart against the snares of the enemy; inflame my will. I have heard your voice; I don’t want to harden my heart and resist, saying ‘Later..., tomorrow.’ Nunc coepi! Now I begin, in case there is no tomorrow for me.

O Spirit of truth and wisdom, Spirit of understanding and counsel, Spirit of joy and peace! I want whatever you want. I want it because you want it, I want it however you want it, I want it whenever you want it...

Come O Holy Spirit

Come O Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and enkindle in them the fire of your love. V/. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created, R/. And you shall renew the face of the earth. Let us pray. O God, you have taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit; grant that by the same Spirit we may be always truly wise, and ever rejoice in his consolation. Through Christ our Lord. R/. Amen.

VENI, Sancte Spiritus

R. Amen

sweet unction and true love. Thou who art sevenfold in thy gifts, finger of God’s right hand; his promise, teaching little ones to speak and understand. O guide our minds with thy blest light, with love our hearts enflame, and with thy strength which ne’er decays, confirm our mortal frame. Far from us drive our deadly foe, true peace unto us bring; and through all perils lead us safe beneath thy sacred wing. Through thee may we the Father know, through thee the eternal Son; and thee, the Spirit of them both, thrice blessed Three in One. All glory to the Father be, with his co-equal Son; the same to thee, great Paraclete, while endless ages run. Amen.

Tu septiformis munere, digitus paternae dexterae, tu rite promissum Patris, sermone ditans guttura. Accende lumen sensibus, infunde amorem cordibus, infirma nostri corporis, virtute firmans perpeti. Hostem repellas longius, pacemque dones protinus, ductore sic te praevio, vitemus omne noxium. Per te sciamus da Patrem, noscamus atque Filium, teque utriusque Spiritum credamus omni tempore. Deo Patri sit gloria, et Filio qui a mortuis surrexit, ac Paraclito in saeculorum saecula. Amen

Thou of all consolers best, thou the soul’s delightful guest, dost refreshing peace bestow. Thou in toil art comfort sweet, pleasant coolness in the heat, solace in the midst of woe. Light immortal, light divine, visit now these hearts of thine, and our inmost being fill. If thou take thy grace away nothing pure in man will stay; all his good is turned to ill. Heal our wounds, our strength renew, on our dryness pour thy dew, wash the stains of guilt away. Bend the stubborn heart and will, melt the frozen, warm the chill, guide the steps that go astray. Thou on us who evermore thee confess and thee adore, with thy sevenfold gifts descend. Give us comfort when we die; give us life with thee on high; give us joys that never end. Amen.

Consolátor óptime, dulcis hospes ánimæ, dulce refrigérium. In labóre réquies, in æstu tempéries, in fletu solácium. Amen.
