The Purple Crayon
Do to others as you would have them do to you. Luke 6:31
A couple of months after our daughter passed her second birthday, she was responding to our questions about colors with “I don’t know.” Her mother and I became a bit concerned about her ability to recognize colors.
Our concern vanished one day when she and her brother were sharing her box of crayons. An argument developed over who would use the purple crayon. Her brother’s solution was to break the purple crayon and give her half. Whereupon, she promptly got up, went to his room, and found his box of crayons. Opening the box, she removed the purple crayon and broke it in half. You know, an eye for an eye and a purple crayon for a purple crayon.
Under pressure, most of us usually reveal who we are and what we know. Hebrews 12:1-3 urges us to look to Jesus with an endurance and commitment that will survive the pressures of trials and temptations. He shows us another way when someone breaks our crayon.
Prayer for Today: Our Father in heaven, thank you for showing us the way to loving others as you would have them love you and help us to follow. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
