Vol. 42 No. 07 21 March 2013 Dear members of the Marcellin College family, This is a year of simplicity at Marcellin. A year when we reflect on our desire to be people of authenticity and integrity. A year when we focus on the dignity of each person in our community and a year when we attempt to do good quietly with humility and modestly. With this idea in mind I was immensely buoyed by the announcement of the naming our new Pope. In choosing our new Holy Father, the Church is sending a clear message to us all about the sought of Church we wish to be. Pope Francis presents himself as a man of simplicity, modesty and humility. A man who has actively reached out to those in greatest need and person who wishes to walk among his people. In choosing the name Francis he has defined the type of leadership he will bring to our Church. St Francis of Assisi was a man who devoted his life to the service of the most disadvantaged of his community. He shunned the privileged life he had been born into in order to walk with and live with those in poverty. He believed the best way to bring the Good News of Jesus to his community was by example. St Francis once said Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words. He displayed his humility when he suggested If God can work through me, he can work through anyone. He demonstrated his selflessness when he told us most famously that it is giving that we receive. I look forward with great anticipation and hope to the leadership and direction Pope Francis will bring to us all. It is with this notion of simplicity in mind that I highlight today the work of a group of people in our College who do much good quietly for the boys in their care – our Pastoral Leaders. These dedicated staff are at the very heart of Pastoral care at Marcellin. Each day as I wander in and out of classrooms during morning Pastoral I witness people who are devoted to the young men in their charge. I observe teachers who show great love and concern for their boys, who have an intimate knowledge of each student in their pastoral group and who walk along side their boys through their time here at Marcellin. In speaking with many of you I hear wonderful stories of care and thoughtfulness regarding the work of these people. I hear boys too speak with great affection and gratitude towards their Pastoral Leader. I firmly believe that one of the most significant reasons for the easy transition which many of our students experience in commencing at Marcellin is due in no small part to the work of these dedicated people. In the footsteps of Marcellin Champagnat they love them and love them all equally and in the spirit of St Francis of Assisi their work is motivated not by what they receive but by what they give to their boys. I am personally grateful for the wonderful Pastoral Leaders of Marcellin College who each day live out the Marist Characteristic of simplicity by doing good quietly for the boys of our community. I leave you this week with the Prayer of St Francis in honour of our new Pope and in gratitude to the Pastoral Leaders of Marcellin. Yours sincerely, Mark Murphy Principal

Vol. 42 No. 07 21 March 2013 Dear members of the Marcellin College family,

This is a year of simplicity at Marcellin.

Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

Inter-House Swimming Carnival Last Tuesday 12th March we held the annual House Swimming Carnival. With the carnival moving to Northcote Pool for the first time, Sportsmaster Mr Justin Abbott and the PE Department did a superb job organising what is always a hectic but very successful day with excellent levels of participation and enthusiasm. I would also like to acknowledge the superb leadership displayed by so many of our senior students and not just those with official roles. It was great to see them encouraging their House team-mates and supporting staff and students alike. Please see below for a Report on the carnival for our Sports Captain, Marcus Bontempelli. On the 12th of March 2013 the Inter-House Swimming Carnival took place at the Northcote Aquatic and Recreation Centre. It is obvious that the Swimming Carnival is a highlight event on the Marcellin calendar and 2013 delivered yet another outstanding occasion. For some it was their first experience of House competition but for others it is the end of House Swimming at Marcellin, and I am sure the day will be one remembered for many years to come. The day began with the arrival of the Senior School (Years 10-12) highlighting the wild imaginations of Year 12 students through their ambitious costumes. It was encouraging to see the overwhelming amount of team unity and House spirit which was an obvious representation of each House’s focus on “having a go” with the slightly competitive streak that provided bragging rights for the next couple of days in the school yard. It’s without doubt that we notice the efforts of all teachers and staff who significantly contributed to the smooth running of the day and special thanks goes to the numerous Year 12 student leaders who continued to support their relevant House, even after their duties were completed. With the Senior School departing, the pool saw the arrival of a very enthusiastic and excited Junior School craving a cool-off from the thirty six degree day Melbourne had delivered. The juniors maintained the tenacity and participation of their fellow Marcellin students, showing promising signs for the future. Congratulations to all those who competed in events for the day, underpinning the true values Marcellin students hold, strength and determination The overall results were: Kenny 1085 1 Marlhes 1030 2 Augustine 947 3 Mannes 923 4 Carnie 883 5 Lavalla 882 6 Faulkner 846 7 Redden 834 8 Champagnat 817 9 Congratulations to the following Individual year level champions: Year 7 Gerard McConville Year 8 Carlos Berbia Year 9 Nicholas Badrock Year 10 Gianluca Rossi Year 11 Antoni Skoraczynski Year 12 Timothy Roberts The manner in which students conducted themselves over the day is something each boy should be extremely proud of and is a great representation of the entire Marcellin community. Special thanks goes to Sports Master Justin Abbott whose input significantly influenced the invaluable experience that each student received.

AGSV – Summer Season On Saturday I was privileged to be present at the Veneto Club to watch the Marcellin 1sts Basketball team take out their third consecutive AGSV Premiership in front of a very big and very vocal crowd. While Trinity provided spirited opposition and it was certainly a pressure game with the scores close throughout, our boys managed to break away in the final minutes to win. Congratulations to all ten boys who took the court on Saturday and to all those involved in Senior Basketball. The game was played in excellent spirit and the gracious speeches post-match by both captains was a great reflection on the sportsmanship generated via AGSV sport. Well done to coach Mr Ben Reynolds and his assistant Mr Brett Atley.

Last weekend saw the close of the summer season, with the exception of the AGSV Swimming Carnival to be held at MSAC this Friday evening. Firstly, thank you to all the staff who have worked so hard with the summer sports teams, training mid-week and looking after the games on Saturdays. Secondly, good luck to Mr Alan Boscacci and the swimming team as they conclude preparations for the culminating event of Friday. We now shift our attention to Winter Sports with 1st XV Rugby well underway in preparation for their April tour of New Zealand and several football and soccer squads beginning preseason. Cross Country trains all year round but their AGSV season also begins early in Term 2. Good luck to all players and coacjes for a successful 2013 season. End of term arrangements Families are reminded that students conclude Term 1 on Thursday 28th March at 3:20pm. Bus services are as per normal arrangements. I wish to remind all parents & students that full winter uniform is required from the commencement of Term 2. Details of the official College uniform supplier are outlined in the 2013 Student Planner.

Project-based Learning in VCE Geography Mr Peter Morfea

During a two week period Year 11 students participated in project-based learning where they built a number of different volcanoes as part of their VCE studies. Projects allow students the opportunity to learn while creating something new. Using a design cycle students first had to investigate their particular volcano doing research and writing. After this process was complete they then designed their volcano by drawing and labelling a plan. Only after this second stage could they create. As part of their plans they also had to find and locate the materials they would use to construct their volcanoes. Working in small groups, project-based learning engages students in essential 21st Century skills: cooperation; communication; presentation; creativity; problem-solving and teamwork. At the end of the construction process students had to present their model, explain their volcano type, and publicly reflect on the quality of what they built and what things they would do differently in the future. Although students had to create a geographically accurate landform, this type of learning allows for a great degree of student voice and choice, particularly in the creation and presentation stages. Overall student feedback was positive with comments like…it provided a fun method of showcasing our knowledge to the class; we enjoyed the fact that it wasn’t just written work but more of a hands on project; and we also learnt a lot about other volcanoes from the other groups. HOUSE PARALITURGIES Mrs Gail Coates and Brother Mark Fordyce

The House Paraliturgies commenced this week with Carnie, Mannes, Redden, Kenny, Faulkner and Marlhes taking place in the Marcellin Hall and our College Chapel. The theme of the Paraliturgies this year is “In the Name of Jesus…. and In the Spirit of Mary and Champagnat.” The Spirit of the Liturgy emphasized our theme of Simplicity for the year and an sense of belonging, especially for the new Year 7s. House Leaders and SRC members in each House took a prominent role in the Liturgy especially the placing the five foundation sand stones on the alter which represent the five characteristics of Marist education. These characteristics are: Presence, Love of Work, Family Spirit, In the Way of Mary, and Simplicity. Each boy was invited to come forward and to take a small stone with a simple gold cross painted on it as a reminder of our faith and desire to be willing participants in all our House and College activities this year. We look forward to finishing our Paraliturgies next week with Lavalla, Champagnat and Augustine. We hope and pray that the Paraliturgies give all members of our Marcellin family a special time to reflect and pray together.

2013 AGSV Premiers Mr Ben Reynolds – Teacher in Charge of Basketball

After going through the season undefeated, the 1st Basketball Team was looking to make it three AGSV premierships in a row with a win against Trinity Grammar on Saturday. An injury to Vice Captain Matthew Jackson was a massive loss to the team but this would just give some else an opportunity to step up.

Image: The team celebrating their success Image: 1st team during a time out

Tremendous support from the large crowd saw Trinity match it with Marcellin early and made scoring tough. Both teams worked hard offensively and with the deficit just six points at half time the match was still up for grabs. Captain David Tomat led from the front with 14 points and some great defensive pressure. Reece McKenzie was a powerhouse rebounding strongly at both ends of the court and ensured that the scoreboard clicked over by scoring 21. Marcellin was made to work hard in the second half but came out victorious by ten points.
