Roxana Saberi Sentenced to 8 Years in Prison in Iran

Iranian-American journalist Roxana Saberi has been accused of spying and sentenced by an Iranian court to eight years in prison. The conviction comes after a one-day closed trial. It is the first time an American journalist has been found guilty of espionage in Iran.

An Iranian-American journalist, Roxana Saberi, was sentenced to eight years in prison yesterday by the

Iranian authorities after being found guilty of spying for the United States. The US secretary of state,

Hillary Clinton, has demanded that the former Miss North Dakota, who had been working in Iran as a

freelance journalist, be released. April 18, 2009

Iranian Americans Seriously Concerned About Journalist

Roxana Saberi Detained in Iran

March 2, 2009, Washington, D.C. – PAAIA and the Iranian American community at large are seriously concerned about the fate of Roxana Saberi, an Iranian American journalist, who according to recent media reports was arrested in Iran in late January and is being held at an undisclosed location without any formal charges having been filed against her.

Saberi, 31, was born in the United States to an Iranian born father and a Japanese born mother. She grew up in North Dakota, where she was a star high school soccer player and pianist. In 1997 she was named Miss North Dakota.

Detained Journalist's Father Vows To Stay In Iran

Journalist Roxana Saberi, who has been detained in a Tehran prison since she was arrested on Jan. 31,

had surprise visitors Monday: her parents. "She was quite surprised to see us," Saberi's father, Reza, tells NPR's Melissa Block. "We were also very excited that we were able to see our daughter. She looked pale and a little weak, but then we talked,

her spirits were good. April 7, 2009

President Barack Obama said on Sunday he is “gravely concerned” about the well-being of Roxana Saberi, the Iranian-American journalist who one day

earlier was sentenced to eight years in prison for espionage, following a one-day trial behind closed doors in Tehran. The Associated Press reported that

Mr. Obama, said he was confident that Ms. Saberi was not in espionage against Tehran.

Clinton said in a statement the U.S. is working with Swiss diplomats in Iran to get details about the court's decision and to ensure Saberi's well-being. Clinton said the U.S. will "vigorously raise our concerns" with the Tehran government. She says Saberi was in Iran to learn more about her cultural heritage.

…may your prayers give Roxana courage

Roxana said in court that her earlier confessions were not true and she told me she had been tricked into believing that she

would be released if she cooperated ... Her denial is documented in her case but apparently they

didn't pay attention to it.

Although Roxana is currently receiving little contact from outside jail, she will one day receive the messages

on the site below. Family and friends hope that time is soon.

Roxana has been detained in a Tehran prison since she was arrested

on Jan. 31, 2009.

We Pray For Her Release!

“Let Me Tell You A Story” is a song and a prayer written for Roxana. Because she is a journalist, a story teller, a fitting title would be about how she tells stories, and now, how we are

telling her story.

Our story is simply a prayer, …. Roxana’s safe return.
