F isch–ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer What is your image of heaven? We all have one. Writers and painters through the ages have speculated. Even the

human authors of Scripture fantasized about what the next world is like, using dozens of different images and metaphors. And why shouldn’t we ponder this question? After all, heaven is where we hope to be one day. A while back the editors of U.S. Catholic conducted a

survey of their readers’ notions of heaven. I came across author Tom McGrath’s observations regarding the survey and the responses given:

“Many respondents pictured heaven as a rural setting such as a walled garden, a mountaintop cabin, or a haven in the woods. When asked to comment on the results, church historian Martin Marty said that a culture’s image of heaven says a lot about its present situation. Because ours is be-coming an increasingly urban culture, heaven for us is what seems just beyond our grasp – a natural retreat from the rush of daily life in city or town. But when the Book of Revelation was written, a no-madic, farming culture looked to the shimmering city as their heavenly ideal. Majestic, rising from the plains, shining in the sun, the city captured the imagination of the people as a place of promise and joy. For each of us, our idea of heaven likely holds a clue as to what’s missing in our life. For most modern families, that ‘something missing’ is peace and serenity. Jesus offers us peace, a peace that surpasses our understanding. The way to it is simple, but not easy. It’s to love the people we encounter day by day. If we do that with all our hearts, we’ll know what Saint Catherine of Siena meant when she said, ‘All the way to heaven is heaven.’”

The idea that our notion of what heaven is like actually reflects what we feel is missing in our present life really struck me. As I reflected on my own notion of heaven I must admit that I com-pletely conform to this pattern. Perhaps you will find that the same is true for you. But does this insight serve any useful pur-pose or is it just intellectual “mind candy”? I think there is a les-son we can learn and use. Jesus did not just call us to live an other-worldly exis-tence. Rather, he asks us to transform the present world to match the fullness of the next. The Kingdom of God isn’t just a heavenly future “in a galaxy far, far away;” the Kingdom is meant to be here and now, too. To become so fixated on heaven to the extent that we ignore the present, we give credence to Karl Marx’s statement that “religion is the opium of the people.” If we recognize what it is we are missing in our personal lives and in the world around us, we should take some steps to fill that long-ing through our love of Christ and through service to his Gospel. This is the lesson we can integrate into our daily lives by reflect-ing on our notion of heaven. It doesn’t hurt to remember that all of our notions of heaven are flawed and inadequate due to our limited human understanding. As wonderful as we can imagine things, God’s imagination far surpasses ours. Perhaps the most accurate con-clusion is the one offered by St. Paul: “Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it so much as dawned on man what God has prepared for those who love him.” If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the parish office or send an email to [email protected].

Annual Catholic Appeal Update We have received our first report on the 2013 Annual Appeal and we are very grateful for the response of our generous parishioners. The current total of pledges for this year’s Appeal is $168,984.00, of which $100,000 has already been paid! While our gifts to the Appeal will not be matched this year, the Appeal is continues to be a major source of funding for the Archdiocese and St. Mary. All money received that exceeds our parish goal of $65,996.28 will be returned to St. Mary. As in previous years, this “rebate” is an important source of funding for the functioning of our parish and its ministries. We thank everyone for your generous pledges and pay-ments to the Annual Catholic Appeal. We are very grateful for all those who have sacrificed to support the Archdiocese and St. Mary!

Harvest Fest September 28, 2013

Treasures from Our Tradition Frequent fliers today have many ways to accrue air miles, so one doesn’t always have to endure long hours in cramped seats to earn free hours in cramped seats. In St. Paul’s day, there were no such perks, nor would there have been any legal system for him to protest the shipwrecks he endured. He had other rewards in mind. The churches that he established in the catalogue of cities from today’s first reading must have been very different from one another. Lan-guage, culture, customs, religious history, obstacles to community, social challenges, the places where they met, their clothing, their bread and wine, all distinct, particular to the area. There were social customs as well: in a Christian household, the only place where a slave would be able to stand legally as an equal with the master would be at the table of the Lord, because at that table a new world of reconciliation was imaged. While Paul re-vered local customs, he was relentless about challenging the ways that people lived their Christian lives and how their worship reflected them. It is much the same today, as a global Catholic Church seeks to respect local customs and culture, allowing for differences in many things, yet always giving expression to the underlying presence of Christ, who binds us all together into his body.

ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO OFFICE OF THE ARCHBISHOP May 2013 Dear Friends in Christ, On Mother’s Day we celebrate the women—mothers, grandmothers, aunts, friends—who have loved and cared for us. It is through their unconditional love and compassion that we begin to under-stand the way in which God cares for us; and the command of Christ to love

our neighbors as we love ourselves comes alive. Mother’s Day is also a day to remember and support the thousands of people who struggle with poverty and receive the love and compassionate help of Catholic Charities. The Catholic Charities Collection on Mother’s Day gives us the opportunity to participate in the Gospel mission to love and serve the poor. It provides us with an extraordinary chance to support a criti-cal mission of the Church—the care of our hungry, homeless and hurt-ing brothers and sisters, many of whom may live right in your own parish communities. Catholic Charities relies on funding from the Mother’s Day Collection to help serve more than one million people of all ages, races and religions in Cook and Lake Counties. Families, children, pregnant and parenting teens, seniors and veterans who have served our country most bravely come to Catholic Charities for the basic necessities of life: food, clothing and housing. Catholic Charities meets these basic needs with patience and understanding, and then provides a broad range of professional services to help their clients work their way out of poverty, addressing the problems that keep them from independence and self-sufficiency. Catholic Charities is the public face of the Church’s love for all in Christ’s name. I am profoundly grateful to the devoted staff, volunteers and donors who dedicate themselves to the mission of char-ity in the Archdiocese of Chicago. I thank you for your past support, and I urge you to please, once again, take the opportunity to bring Christ’s love to the most vulnerable among us by participating in the Catholic Charities Collection on Mother’s Day. May God bless you and your families. You and those you love are in my prayers; please keep me in yours. Sincerely yours in Christ, Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago

The Ways of Love One can feel the energy of a young, growing church in to-day’s first reading. For Paul and Barnabas, it’s smooth sailing. For the sponsoring church at Antioch, good news. The second reading—a vision—offers a picture of triumph, pure and simple. We might para-phrase God’s direct words to read: “Don’t you see? I make all things new!” The young church remains new and young to this day if and when it follows the command Jesus lays down in the Gospel: “Love one another.” The attitude and actions of love define the disciples and identify them with their master. Every person on this earth can be a disciple. For discipleship does not depend on learning or sophistication or age or arcane knowledge of secret cults. We are asked to study and practice the ways of love, right here and right now in the company of ordinary people. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Living God’s Word All of our efforts to remake life can only be meager strivings. In the end it is God who makes all things new, and we are but sparks of God’s creation who seek to live in harmony with the Spirit set free by Je-sus who is Lord.

Reflecting on God’s Word A while ago the Lysol® brand of cleaning products was promoting a new toilet brush, one that has the liquid cleanser and disinfectant stored inside the handle. Televi-sion became its midwife, promoting it as the new genera-tion of toilet bowl cleaners. The ad concluded with a se-ries of housewife testimonials, the final one of which at-tested, “It has changed my life!” It was but another ap-peal to our hidden longing that our lives be made new. Or consider the abundance of television makeover pro-grams, even a surgical makeover—the “extreme” make-over. Each of us in some way longs to be made new, sometimes vicariously and sometimes personally. One of the paradoxes of life is that the more we seek ourselves, the more we lose ourselves; and the more we are willing to lose ourselves, the more we find our-selves. It is, of course, only another way of speaking about love. It seems to be a simple rule of thumb. If your life is in chaos or disarray, if you find yourself unsettled and discombobulated, then forget about your own life and begin to focus on the lives of others. It is how love works, if indeed love does any work at all. It is love that makes us new. It is the ultimate makeover, simply be-cause God is love. Weapons and war will never create peace; only compas-sion will, and justice, and heartfelt care for all of human-ity. Punishment and the inhumane conditions of prison life will never remake the soul of one who is incarcerated, only hope for a future and a nurturing of the human spirit will. More liturgical regulations and prescriptions will never bring deepening faith life to our eucharistic assemblies; only love for one another will, and the heal-ing we so desperately need.

Worldwide Marriage Encounter April 27-28, 2013 In today’s Gospel Jesus commanded his disciples to love one another as He had loved them. He still contin-

ues to give us this same command over 2000 years later. Do we re-flect this love in our lives and relationships, especially our marriage relationship, so that our children, family, friends and even strangers see us as followers of Jesus? Let God show you how to love your spouse and others as He loves you. The next Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekends are May 17-19 in Brookfield, WI; June 7-9 in Rockford, IL and July 12-14 in Madison, WI. Early registration is highly recommended.
