Snowmobile Club Youth Rep: A Personal Story

If you’ve read this newsletter over the last several months you know that the Prairie Riders continue to look for a snowmobiler who want to take his/her passion to the next level and serve as the Kenosha County youth representative to the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs (AWSC). For those of you who are interested, but don’t quite know what it’s about, former rep Lauren (Pietkiewicz) Levey shares her story below …

Lauren’s Story …

Hello everyone! I have been a member of the Prairie Riders my entire life. When I was 15, Arlyn told me about this youth snowmobile program at the state level that was just starting up. It was a group for youth ages 14-18 that were interested in getting more involved in snowmobiling at the county, state and even international level. I didn't know there was a group beyond the Kenosha County Alliance, so I had a lot to learn about snowmobiling!

I attended my first AWSC Spring Convention at the Chula Vista when I was 15 – I had no clue what I was getting into! At the time, there were about 10 other youth my age that were interested in getting more youth involved (because, after all, we are the future of this sport). This group was called KAOS (Kids and Adults on Sled).

Our main goal at AWSC events was just to be seen. We wanted the adults to know that we were present and interested in getting involved at a larger level. I started this program as a very shy 15-year-old that would have NEVER gotten in front of a group of 500-plus snowmobilers to talk about how to get youth involved in snowmobiling … and boy did that change!

After joining KAOS, some of the things I’ve been involved with are: attending two International Snowmobile Congress', the New York State Snowmobile Association Annual meeting, the Illinois Association Annual meeting, many AWSC conventions, workshops and directors meetings, many KAOS Leadership Rides, ran for Miss Snowflake, won a $1,500 AWSC Scholarship, won Young Snowmobiler of the Year, won Snowmobile Family of the Year, joined the Magazine Committee for the AWSC, and so much more. I also currently serve on the Youth Committee and Scholarship Committees.

I've learned many skills: public speaking, communications and networking. I've met a lot of people throughout the state that have the same passion that we all have. I've met some of my best friends through this organization – and I can even say I met my husband through this organization. It’s a great way to get involved and become a future leader of an organization that is very important to all of us. If anything, it’s a great resume booster!

Snowmobile Club Youth Rep: A Personal Story (cont.)

If you are a youth, or know any youth may have even the SLIGHTEST interest in being involved in snowmobiling and learning the behind-the-scenes aspect of the sport, please tell them about this amazing program!

If you have questions, email me at [email protected], check out the KAOS Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/AWSC.KAOS), or email the KAOS group ([email protected]).

We are still seeking a new Kenosha County youth representative to the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs (AWSC). This important role helps guide programs that give youth an in-depth understanding of how the snowmobile program is organized – from the local clubs and county organizations to the state program.

As the Kenosha County representative, you will attend AWSC meetings, representing Kenosha County. To be considered representative must be between 14 and 18 years old and a high school student. If you’re interested in learning more, contact Jody Hammond.

April Fundraiser Planning Underway! Prairie Riders Fundraiser Set for April 21 in Salem

Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 21 – it will be here before you know it! Join your fellow club members for a rockin’ good time at the Stein Farm in Salem. The bash is open to all – Prairie Riders, along with Alliance and AWSC club members, and other family and friends, too!

We need your help to spread the word about the fundraiser. This event happens every two years and it’s a great chance to show our commitment to our community and to help our club and Hospice Alliance, which will receive a portion of proceeds. (Please be sure to check out the attached flyer to this newsletter for more information.)

To help us make this fundraiser the best ever, we need your help so let us know if … 1. You will attend.2. How many people you plan to bring – there will a prize for the club member who brings the

most guests! 3. You are able to help in any way – planning before the event, setting up the night before the

party, helping at the door, helping with raffles and the silent auction at the party, or staying after the part to help with clean up.

4. You can donate a prize for the raffles and/or silent auction. We are looking for items that could go in a gift basket – wine/booze, gift certificates, new snowmobile gear or apparel, candles, jewelry – or even a basket and tissue paper to display the items!

The planning team is meeting before the February club meeting – feel free to join Leigh Ann and the team at the Brat Stop at 6:30 on Wednesday, Feb. 21, and share your ideas!

Also, you can buy tickets ($15 per person) at the February and March club meetings. We also will have tickets available to purchase at the door … but pre-purchasing the tickets helps us plan for food and drinks that will be served.

We have a lot of fun things planned! The theme for this year’s fundraiser is the Prairie Riders Pajama Party! For $15 per person, you can enjoy great food, great company, live entertainment (to be announced) … and comfortable PJs!

- Thanks to Leigh Ann Petrusky for contributing!

Prairie Riders Hit the Northern Woods Trails

Earlier this month, 45 Prairie Riders club members headed north to the hit trails in Manitowish Waters and surrounding areas. Everyone had a great time, along with many opportunities to get together, share stories and plan the next day’s activities.

The club dinners were great, especially at Ye Olde Shillelagh where we all enjoyed a huge dinner made just for the club! The Friday and Saturday night bands –booked exclusively for the Prairie Riders – were fun, too!

In fact, outside of one slightly charred trailer, one melted sled, a few covered in soot, and a sled that met some trees, all snowmobilers looked like they had a great time!
