Annabel Sutherland after receiving her Australian Cap

Congratulations to Annabel Sutherland who made her debut for Australia v England in February 2020. Annabel was

also part of the Australian Squad who successfully defended the T20 World Cup in March 2020.

Congratulations to Will Sutherland who made his 1st Class debut for Victoria v Queensland on 12 November 2019. Will

went on to take his maiden 5 wicket haul v Queensland in Feb 2020.



140th Birthday Celebration

On Saturday 7th March 2020 the Prahran Cricket Club celebrated its 140th birthday with a Gala Ball at the

Amora Hotel Riverwalk Melbourne. 180 guests were in attendance as we inducted 5 new members into

the Hall of Fame. All Life memebrs who were in attendance also received a new life member badge

which can be proudly worn at all club functions. A big thank you goes to the organizing committee of Lisa

Grimwade & Phil Williamson.

Carl Hieser with the Higgins Community Award

Congratulations and due recognition to Karl Hieser for his outstanding volunteer contribution

to the Community. Karl was presented with the 2019 Higgins Community Service Award by

Federal Member for Higgins Katie Allen & Ms Carolyn Clarke OAM (December 2019).



Season 2019/20 saw the introduction of the Grimmett Club for all past players, volunteers & supporters. The

1st project saw the Grimmett Club present the club with framed posters displaying the names of every

PCC 1st XI player. The Grimmett Club looks forward to continuing its support of the club through such

SEASON 2019/20



PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Dear Members, Players, Life Members and Supporters,

As I write this report and reflect on the 2019/20 season, which had so many interesting stories and

developments, but none bigger than the one prominently edged in our memory called COVID – 19,

which unfortunately brought a premature end to our cricket season. However we saw the club achieve

some incredible milestones, 7 out of a possible 8 sides competing in Finals, a first ever for any Premier

Club in Melbourne and the 2nd XI winning the Flag, the first Premiership for the club since 2012 season

and for the 2nd XI since 1952.

Our 2019/20 season, overarchingly was a further step forward for the club, as I reflected in my address

last season, as any good Strategy once developed, always requires the right personnel to help deliver

and enable our plan. The 2019/20 season was testimony to this, and we saw some definitive steps

forward in the right direction.

I wanted to thank all the players, for embracing the continued evolution and change, their support in

building momentum both on and off the field this past season gives us belief we are on the right track.

We saw some outstanding results, that gives one the sense that the future is bright, continued belief and

ability to win the key moments, will ensure the club continues to see future success.

Throughout the season we saw signs of great individual performances as well as team performances.

In our Women’s program, we entered for the first time, a Women’s 3rd XI into the Women’s Community

Competition. This is testament to the work of Carl Sandri and Tim White , ensuring we are not only

competitive in the top grade, but also that PCC is seen as a key developer of Women’s cricket

attracting players to build depth and development of the women’s game.

We had an excellent season across the Women’s program. Our 1st X1 side aided by the arrival of 3

overseas players, Gabby Lewis (Ireland International), Sterre Kallis (Netherlands International) and Robine

Ryke (Netherlands), continued to be in contention to win a premiership across both formats.

After being the standout out T20 team and winning convincingly through to the Final, PCC were

outplayed in the final, but I felt momentum and learning was on our side in the One Day competition

where PCC ended up 2nd in the round robin and after a convincing semi-final win against Box Hill, looked

very prepared to potentially win the final. Sadly the final was cancelled due to COVID, but an

exceptionally good season overall to end in both finals.

The 2nd XI continued to develop exceptionally well with their first appearance in a final series. PCC

unfortunately lost in the T20 semi-final, but we continued to see the development of the team, which

bodes well for the future. We have continued to see our Junior development program pay huge

dividends with no fewer than 7 Under age Cricket Victoria Pathway players

coming through the ranks. When you combine these younger players being guided and developed

alongside the likes of Annabel Sutherland, Jess Duffin, Alana King, Emma Ingles you know you are

building momentum and I look forward to seeing further development in the year ahead.

Congratulations to Annabel Sutherland on her selection and performance in the winning Australia T20

side and earning her first Australian contract, it is incredible to think that Annabel started her Premier



career with Prahran as a 13 year old and 5 years later has played and excelled at the highest

level, Congrats Belsy ,PCC is incredibly proud of you.

Congratulations to Alana King and Sterre Kallis on their selection in the Premier Cricket Team of the Year,

we are all incredibly proud of you.

Thank you to Tim White & Chloe Harrison for their work with the Girls development Squad which involved,

winter plus mid week sessions in season, with the Senior Group and Friday nights with game time. This is a

wonderful initiative and is helping to quickly develop the girls and ready them for 1st X1 cricket and

beyond. A special thanks to all the parents of the girls who helped so much throughout the season. As

an example, covers can be a challenge at the best of time and we were so grateful to the parents that

always put their hands up and helped. This is what a club is all about and you all showed outstanding

leadership.

The Male program took a decisive step forward this year, for the first time in the last 3 seasons we had a

stable and focused preseason. It also included several sessions with Andrew Horsfield, defining what the

playing group, collectively wanted to be known for, on and off the field. It was exceptionally well

supported and will underpin the ongoing cultural and behaviour set we are striding for as Premier club of

choice.

The season was a strong step forward for the club, overall. Having all 4 teams playing finals was a strong

Indication of progress. Prahran finished 3rd in the Club Championship illustrating the giant steps we have

taken over the last 2 years. Every team was competitive and consistent all year, with the stand outs

being the 2nds and 4ths finishing 1st and 2nd respectively.

The shift throughout the club was the ability to win matches that were in the balance, where players

took accountability for their roles and collectively as a group believed that we could win from whatever

position we were in.

The First XI took another step forward, which saw performances

that gave one the belief that we were not far off a top 4 team.

The emergence of James Billington as a genuine top 3 batter at

this level and beyond, as well as the ongoing leadership of Captain

Jake Hancock who consistently set the standard and led from the

front, ably baked up this year by the senior experience of Steven

Seymour made the 1st XI more than competitive. With some planned

new players for next season we will continue to strengthen and build

our ability to take further steps forward.

The 2nd XI were our stand out team all season, in the top 4 mix all year, winning every match since the

last week in October and finishing up Top of the table, an outstanding season. Finishing on top of the

table, ended up being very beneficial, in the shortened final’s fixtures due to COVID, with Prahran being

awarded the Premiership. Congratulations to Steve De Bolfo who lead by example, anchored the team

and built a winning culture. The big shift this season was the ability of the team to find ways to win

matches from difficult positions.

The Third XI performed well throughout the season. They were a team that arguably should have finished

the season in the top 4 with the talent and balanced experience they had. It will be a season with good

learnings, and I know will benefit them as they go into next season. To

Sam Hill who led from the front and built belief and pride, a big thank you. The 3rd XI are a critical cog as

they are developing several players that will be the future of PCC, so we look forward to big things in

2020/21 from them.

The 4XI had an exceptional year, the addition of Brett Walker as Captain, with his experience and skill

set, enabled the 4XI to just miss out on topping the table and ended up 2nd. The 4XI continued to blood

several youngsters which saw so much learning and development.

I believe we have found the right balance to ensure we are competitive as a 4XI, so with Brett leaving to

go back to Adelaide, we will ensure we replicate this philosophy next season.

To all the season ending players who won awards, a massive congratulations, with special mention to

Alana King and Nigel Hunt ,the respective Women’s and Male Club Champion’s as well as Nigel Hunt for

being awarded the AA Horneman Perpetual Award.

Congratulations to our Contracted Players Will Sutherland, Annabel Sutherland, Alana King, Kath

Hempenstall and Erica Kershaw, we are all very proud of your achievements.

A special mention to Alana King who has taken up a contract for the 2020/21 season with WA Cricket.

Alana you will be a massive loss to PCC both on and off the field, you have been a symbol of what we

aspire to be on and off the field. We wish you all the best and hope you fulfil your dreams in WA and

look forward to hopefully seeing you back at PCC one day.

To our Coaches, firstly a huge thank you to Julien Weiner, who has bought back structure, hard work and

has built a great culture around the Male program, which has already showed signs of great progress

this season. Justin Graham, who continues to be an incredible asset, Justin has done a massive amount

of work across the grades and even donned his creams for several matches. To Bryce, Dimmi and David

Hemp, who have all played critical roles with technical assistance in helping move the club forward,

thank you all for your time, effort and expertise ,it is greatly appreciated by all.

To Carl Sandri, his passion is unparalleled and your commitment and focus to female development is

much appreciated. Tim White his assistant, for your continued development of our players throughout

the grades. The 2nd XI had their best finish yet and this is testament to the additional time and focus from

Tim. To Emma Inglis for her ongoing commitment and focus in helping develop the next group of Premier

player’s, for your coaching on and off the field, it is much appreciated.

Without doubt, the biggest and most time-consuming job in the club is that of Club Manager. Chris

Williamson, a massive thank you for the seamless transition into this role, ability to confidently manage

and navigate the many stake holders. We have 8 sides, so at some stage or another Chris can engage

with around 100 players in a season along with their parents. Add the committee, supporters, Cricket

Victoria the Australian Cricketers Association, the City of Stonnington, other Toorak Park tenants, other

cricket clubs in the City of Stonnington and anyone else who wants to contact the club and you can

see how big a role it is. Add to that being a member of the Committee, helping coordinate Charity days

like Maddie’s Shield, 13CABS Charity Day, the Presentation Night and you get a sense of the contribution

Chris has made. Thank you so much Chris you are so much appreciated for stepping in at a time of

need.

To my committee, Heidi Sutherland who continued to fulfil the role of sponsorship. Probably the most

difficult role in any Cricket Club looking to generate Sponsorship funds and Heidi has been incredible in

securing us some Notable Sponsorships from The Fox Foundation and CGU Insurance to build on the

incredible existing base of R.T. Edgar (Anthony Grimwade), JR Group (Evelyn Danos), the East Malvern

Community Bank Branch (Peter Norman). Heidi has lead the way again this season with volunteers and

pulled together Team Managers for all our senior sides through recruiting an amazing group of

volunteers which has had a massive benefit for each team on match days. The Volunteers have

developed strong relationships with the Club and all have become an integral part of Prahran.

Thank you to Nigel Hutton, Newsletters, Presentation night, millions of photos taken, Facebook Posts,

Twitter Posts and Instagram posts. Nigel is the quiet behind the scenes person that you can always rely

on to do those things that make such an enormous difference to our club. Never underestimate just how

much valuable work Nigel and his family, does for the club.

John Raglus is another one of those dedicated people that given any task, just puts his head down and

gets the job done. Thank you for all you did in the season John, and for another season as the Club’s

Premier Cricket delegate.

Phil Williamson, thank you for your ongoing guidance and support, always a trusted ear. Phil has

continued to drive our redevelopment program, which has seen the start, of the Net redevelopment in



May this year and we have made good progress

on taking the next steps on the broader

redevelopment of the club with both Council,

Local and National Government as well as CV

and CA. Phil continues to be around the club

on Match days doing his beloved assistant

curator role as the sun comes up and is truly

the Club Man.

David Arnold, in the role of Treasurer, we have

made great strides both strategically and on

how to better use our funds on an ongoing

basis, the club is in a healthy financial position,

so thank you for your input.

To our Team Managers, volunteering your time was so much appreciated, you have added to the PCC

family this year with the passion and commitment you have shown, we are very thankful to xxx.

Some extra special thank-you’s to:

• Rick Sykes is our Treasurer from afar as he passes the baton over to YK Partners from 20/21

• James Higgs who scored for the Men’s 1st X1 sides when his Victorian and Australian scoring

commitments allowed. James also took on the role of MyCricket Manager this season which provided

great support.

• Karl Hieser our 2nd X1 scorer. Thanks to 13CABs who are now sponsoring Karl. More amazing milestones

for Karl again in the past season.

• Chris Seymour, Rosemary Schlittler, Hannah Roberts & Meg Hudson for the wonderful afternoon teas

throughout the season.

• Ian Crawford, keeps on giving to the club. Ian our conversations are always so valuable and I

appreciate your continued support.

• John Zarb for fulfilling the role as Operations Manager and ensuring we continue to have wonderful

midweek and weekend catering as well as effective management of the weekend activities. John it

was wonderful having you back involved at PCC. To Jan Knut and Michael Symons who have been

our match day manager for the past seasons. Thank you for fulfilling such a crucial role and ensuring

our Match days go off without a hitch.

across both Righetti and Toorak Park, always

ready to help and go above and beyond.

coordination of Maddie’s Shield #4. A massive

in this crucial area of community involvement.

and we are so excited by what the future might look

like, thanks to these very special people who share our

vision for the club.

very much for your support, you will be missed, Prahran CC just want to thank you for your incredible

service to CV and Premier Cricket and we wish you well in the future.

• To all our sponsors. Without you, we would not be able to operate at the level we do. Please visit the

website, see who is listed and please make sure that you support them in the same way they support

us.

Despite only having a small committee, we gave back to the community in spades this year. We are a

very important part of the community that is the City of Stonnington and we receive amazing support

from the Council. So, it is important that we play a leading role in not only making cricket great in the

municipality but doing whatever we can to help those that may not have the same opportunities as we

do.

The following is a small sample of how we gave back to the community in season 2019/20:-

• Victoria Police game in November where the Frankston & Prahran Police stations were scheduled

to play a social T20 game to raise funds for the extremely worthwhile cause MoVember.

Unfortunately the game was washed out, however we look forward to hosting the game again

next season.

• Maddie’s Shield #4 was held at Toorak Park in February. This event continues to develop each year

and this year was no exception, being the best yet in terms of support and contribution. We are

proud that we raised roughly $90,000 and so much additional funds going to Maddie Riewoldt’s

Vision. The celebrity game featured some amazing names form AFL and Australian Female Cricket.

• 13 CABS Charity Game. Held in March, it was a game between Taxi Drivers and a handful of

Celebrities which included current legend of Prahran Cricket Club Steven De Bolfo. The game is

held to honour those Taxi Drivers that have sadly lost their lives at work and as a celebration of their

lives, raise money for the Monash Children’s Hospital. Over $20,000 was raised this year.

The future is looking very bright. Work has started on the new cricket nets, the hope is that we will be using

the synthetic nets for pre-season and the turf nets in January 2021. We continue to recruit across both the

Male and Female playing group as we build on our successes from this year with the desired intent to

continue the momentum and not only competing in Finals, but winning premierships.

So, I hope that you can sense from this that the Prahran Cricket Club is, and will continue to be, an

exciting place to be around in coming seasons.

MADDIE’S SHIELD #4

For the fourth consecutive year, Prahran Cricket Club partnered with Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision

and hosted Maddie’s Shield #4 at Toorak Park on Sunday 16h February 2020.

PCC committee member Iain Giles chaired the organising committee which also included Heidi

Sutherland that put together a fantastic community event and raised significant funding for Maddie

Riewoldt’s Vision and Prahran Cricket Club.

A huge thank you to Iain & Heidi and the MS#4 committee for their commitment to this cause. Thanks

also to players, committee, parents and friends who volunteered their time to ensure a great day was

had by all.



COACH'S REPORT

Women's Coach

Season 2019/20 was a season that saw many a Prahran player in representative colors throughout the

year, from the heights of the Australian Women’s team through to the WBBL, WNCL & the junior

national pathways competitions. Each of them were great ambassadors for the Prahran Cricket Club

on the international & professional circuit. There were also numerous girls that represented their

pathway teams in the state championships across all age groups. This was a fantastic achievement

and potentially a starting point to future state and national representation through hard work and

commitment. This bodes well not only for the women’s cricket program at PCC but also for new players

that will join the club, knowing full well that we look forward to developing cricketers far beyond the

premier cricket level.

Having many representative players within the club presents the club and playing group another

positive; opportunities to play in a higher grade than they may have seen themselves playing and thus

giving them the exposure to cricket at the higher level. This exposure opened the girl’s eyes to what it

really takes to compete & succeed at such a high level- skills wise, mentally and physically. It was

indeed another long season for the girls as we do take a very young group in, we were fortunate

enough to have some extra support and ‘hired muscle’ by way of three international overseas players

join the club for the season which added an extra dimension to the squad and provided the depth we

needed when missing senior player to professional duties. Lessons had been learnt from previous

seasons and we were able to successfully navigate both challenging parts of the season as well as

importantly the later part of the season which had us in great shape leading into both of our finals

campaigns.

The finals campaigns saw us successful in both semi-finals with strong individual and team

performances leading to resounding wins. As I’ve spoken of before, Grand finals take everything to

another level and much of what takes place during the season can’t prepare you for what for the

rollercoaster both mentally and physically that such days take you on. Unfortunately for us on the

occasion of the T20 Grand Final we just simply weren’t at the races and suffered a loss- which can

happen in T20 cricket. Our chance for redemption in the 50 over competition served as motivation for

the remainder of the season and the squad had worked hard to earn another Grand Final opportunity-

enter Covid 19 and an abrupt end to the season!

We continue to put together a strong, well rounded playing list each season which should see us in

regular contention for finals. The players are all aware of the high expectations and playing standards

at the club which will no doubt have them all motivated, driven, well prepared and on track to

succeed moving forward.

The club was again the beneficiary of strong leadership from Captain Emma Inglis. Emma has been at

the forefront of the team delivering on its potential and believes there is more team and individual

success to come with the talent we have at the club. She again demonstrated her ability to focus on

the task at hand by ensuring everything ran smoothly on game days even if her preparation at times

may have been hectic due to her WA and Melbourne Stars commitments. The core senior playing

group were consistent in pushing high standards at training and games throughout the season and

ensured we contested games hard whilst having more fun in the process than any other team. Emma

and the senior playing group did an outstanding job throughout the season ensuring the playing group

were always developing individually, moving forward collectively and learning to play their role within

the team.

The club should be extremely proud to have seen Annabel Sutherland debut and represent Australia in

the ICC T20 World Cup, a tremendous effort that should be well recognized by all involved in the PCC

community, hopefully we see Annabel play an even bigger role in the green and gold well into the

future!! From all of us especially in the PCC women’s program- Congratulations Bells.

It was a privilege to be able to coach and work with this group of girls across what is a long season

(when you consider some players began working on their games as early as June/July) and hopefully



all of the players that I have had the opportunity to mentor have not only enjoyed their time in the

program but have developed as cricketers and more importantly as people.

The talent and potential on display throughout the season was exciting to say the least and together

we look forward to setting our sites on further success as a club and as individuals as well as raising

expectations again on our quest as being not only the most successful, as seen by the combination of

on field results and production of players premier cricket, women’s Premier Cricket Club, but also the

club of choice for talented players around Victoria. There’s no question all of the girls are excited at

the challenges that lie ahead and are all prepared to do whatever it takes across the winter months

and through pre-season to better themselves individually for the good of the team as we hunt more

success in season 2020/21

I’d like to thank the entire club for the support of the Women’s program across the WP1, WP2 & WP3

teams. We all understand the benefits that are afforded to the club and its people with full integration

of a women and men’s program and we are no doubt looking to stay leaders of the pack in that

regard.

To President, Nigel Parsons and his general committee, for their persistent drive, support and efforts to

making this program a success - thank you.

It was great to have the three overseas players, Stere Kallis, Robine Rijke & Gaby Lewis join us for the

season, the girls enjoyed your company on and off the field- you were a big part of the playing groups

success. Also a huge thank-you to my assistant coach Tim White as well as very importantly all the

parents & supporters that have helped or assisted in many ways across the season.

COACH'S REPORT

Men's Coach

Firstly, let me wish every player, club member, sponsor, volunteer and supporter good health as we all

work our way through this challenging time. Season 2019/20 saw significant improvement across all

facets of our playing program with a continued commitment to building the platform of a sustainable

high performance environment that offers a caring, enjoyable, educational and challenging program

for all players.

Any objective assessment would say that, as a club, we were more than competitive and for

the 1st time ever, all 4 male teams qualified for finals. Ultimately only the 2nd XI got through the initial

round of finals and were awarded the premiership – a credit to Bolf and the way he prepared, led,

taught, challenged and inspired his players throughout the season.

We, as a club, now have a clear benchmark to move forward from and must maintain our efforts to

improve, learn and challenge each other to sustain the standards we’ve set. We now look forward

with real anticipation and enthusiasm to the coming season, whatever shape that might take.

The players and coaches are grateful that the club, so professionally run by Nigel and his committee,

continues to invest in specific areas identified by the coaching panel and player feedback as vital for

us to focus on as we look to improve all that we do.

Our pre-season program is locked away.

The transformation of Toorak Park is underway.

Our coaching panel is in place.

Our committee and sponsors are aligned on

the direction and vision for the club.

It’s now firmly in the hands of the coaches and

playing group to confidently and strongly do the

work required so we’re in the best possible shape

to tackle the coming season.

To all the coaches and volunteers, thank you for

your efforts, particularly Justin Graham who, as our

head assistant coach, continues to provide wonderful

support for me personally and who has such a positive

influence around the club.

To the Captains, Jake, Bolf, Hilly & Brett Webber thanks

for your leadership, patience, support and hard work.

To Andrew Horsfield, whose pre-season program on Defining Moments, insights and input during the

season both at a club and personal level, contributed to the improvements we saw.

CAPTAINS' REPORTS

Men's 1st Eleven

We embarked on a journey that began in May with a clear goal to compete for a flag.

We started off with a bang winning our first two games quite convincingly awarding ourselves with two

bonus points.

James Billington rose to the occasion with a hat trick of 80’s to his name. That momentum carried us

through until the start of the Super Slam season where we entered with an intent to improve on last

year.

We had really bowled the house down at that point.

The team were continuously generating pressure and that really became our theme for the year for

our bowling unit and the fielding was there to support that with one of the most elite fielding teams in

the state.

Our Super Slam didn’t go according to plan but as the same as last year we were able to see some of

the most beautiful ball striking from a young exciting batting attack with a highlight game against

Kingston where the team scored 261/4 off our twenty overs. Lachie bangs (81 off 31) and James

Billington (112 off 58) had us all enjoying the show.

At this stage the season was purring we had three of the top ten wicket takers in the competition

Andrew Perrin, Matthew Wilcox and Sam Grimwade whom all had double digit wickets to their names.

We experienced a couple bad losses in the month leading up to Christmas but that only motivated us

more to start the new year with a bang.

The first two games post-Christmas the pros stood

up with Tom Loten being awarded man of the

match against a tough Essendon team and star

bowler Sam Cook taking 5 for 20 against Greenvale

to put us firmly in the hunt for a top four spot.

We were heading into the game against Melbourne

University top of the table. We knew someone needed

to stand up and so one Andrew Perrin walked to the

plate and showed the team he meant business with

6/37 off 17 overs. We witnessed the best performance

of the year that day.

Due to rain we were left with a tight table proving that

we needed to win two out of our next three games to

guarantee a spot in the top 8.

We held our nerve in some tough contests where Adam

bull fell back in love with the game as the team

cherished watching his magnificent innings of 113*

against Frankston with great support from the rest of the

batting attack.

In our final game we chased a tricky total against Geelong which clenched us a finals position ranking

at 7th.

We scored our highest 2 day total for the year with 317/7 and we were full of confidence heading into

the next week.

We were ready to go. We gave it everything we had against St Kilda with an absolutely commendable

effort from the bowling unit. We were just beaten by a better team on the weekend. The experience of

finals has made us hungry and excited for what lies ahead for Prahran cricket. As a playing group we

have never been more motivated to win now.

Some congratulations are in order for Steve Seymour who is and always has been Mr. reliable for

Prahran Cricket Club. Steve equaled the game’s first XI record holder and was always someone the

team could turn to when things were tough!

It was a pleasure leading the team to battle and I’d like to thank the players for supporting me on and

off the field.

The team chemistry we built this season should not be under estimated. As we go on to achieve

greater things the bonds that we shared will not be forgotten and will fuel us as a unit when it matters

the most.

The coaching staff who all played such a specific role in the development of our talented young

playing group.

To the volunteers, we all can’t thank you enough for everything you do.

And the committee who provide us as players with the tools to get the most out of our games.

Women's 1st Eleven

Season 2019/20 was a season that saw the First XI finish as minor premiers and make the grand final

in both the 50 and 20 over format. Unfortunately, it was not to be the year of our first Premier Firsts

Premiership, with Covid-19 cutting the season one game short. The T20 final did not go to plan and

we were unfortunately defeated by EMP.

Never the less the year can be viewed as a success as the team improved on its performance from

the yearprior.

Both the young guns and the experienced stood up throughout the year when called upon with a

special mention to Alana King who won the Julie Calvert Club champion Medal and dominated

with both bat and ball.

A highlight this season was the inclusion of three international players. Gabby, Ster and Robine were

all fantastic additions to the team with both skill and personality.

On behalf of the team I would like to recognise the efforts of Head Coach Carl Sandri who again

showed both knowledge and passion towards his role and the improvement of the team and club.

Also a big thank you to TimWhite in assisting Carl and developing the next generation of PCC

champions.

A big thank you also to the committee for their ongoing support of the women’s program.

A special mention also to club legend Julie Calvert who this year was added to the Prahran Hall of

Fame. Julie has been a super star of Brunswick Park in the past and continues to follow the current

Prahran team closely.

This year also saw the Australian Debut of our very own Annabel Sutherland. Belsy was rewarded for

all of her hard work over many years and was part of a winning world cup team. Well done Belsy

and we can’t wait to watch your Australian career with pride.

Finally we wish Alana King the best of luck in the relocation to Perth to pursue greater opportunity in

the WNCL.

Men's 2nd Eleven

The 2019-20 season will no doubt be remembered for the outbreak of the coronavirus. A global

pandemic that has infected millions, killed hundreds of thousands of people and will likely change the

way we live and what we appreciate going forward. For a small group of True Blues, it will also be

remembered as a season that saw a 68 year (1951-52) 2nd XI premiership drought broken by the

Prahran Cricket Club.

Throughout the season, 28 players represented the 2nd XI, with many valuable contributions to team

performance and the ultimate success that was achieved. Consistent performance (10 wins, 4 draws,

2 losses) resulted in a top of the ladder finish and a well-deserved finals birth, of which the squad has

been starved of in recent times.

Following our memorable semi-final victory over a fully loaded St Kilda line-up away at Casey Fields,

Cricket Victoria advised that the season would be cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak. Prahran

was inevitably awarded the 2nd XI PREMIERSHIP due to being the highest ranked team following the

first round of finals cricket being completed.

Whilst some may argue that winning a Premiership in such fashion comes with an asterix of sorts, from

my perspective, going undefeated from October 20, 2019 through to the end of the season,

combined with our ability to win games when our depth was tested the most, leaves no question on

our deservedness to be recognised as this seasons Premiers. For me the only disappointment is that

perhaps not enough Prahran people were able to see this group of players perform on a larger stage.

Given the number of players that came through

the 2nd XI it is difficult to highlight any individual

players out. However, following an inaugural 3,2,1

vote count (Karl Hieser Medal) there was a

unanimous decision that opening bowler Liam Brown

was the 2nd XI player of the season. Whilst Browny

was unavailable for the last few games of the season

due to higher honors, his contribution to the team was

stand-out leading the attack with 19 wickets @ 18.4.

Below are some reflections on our 2019/20 season and

why I feel success came our way:

Whilst the team faced disruption throughout the season

from a selection/player availability perspective, there was

a willingness to accept new challenges, adapt and

respond. Disruption can often be used as an excuse for poor

performance, but credit must be given to all players who

came into the side and made valuable contributions.

Statistically our Two-Day Batting was the best it has been in the 20 years I have been at Prahran across

any grade. We averaged 46.28 runs per wicket lost (1,805 runs made & 39 wickets lost). Simply put we

were good to bat our maximum overs and make 350+ (which we did).

Our Two-Day bowling had discipline with a never say die attitude. This saw us force multiple last session

opposition batting collapses on flat pitches against strong opposition such as Melbourne, Frankston,

Geelong, & St Kilda.

Our One-Day cricket had a simple approach with player roles well defined. We were fortunate to have

fire power at the top of our batting order who were given a green light to go hard and setup our

innings. Combined with a good mix of pace and spin, we had an attack that could squeeze an

opposition making us a predictable one-day team to ourselves.

There is no doubt our fielding contributed to winning 50/50 games. We managed 14 run outs

throughout the season and took chances that came our way. In the semi-final vs St Kilda sharp

catches to Arjun, Yas, Elvins, and two run outs to Garber was a reflection of our ability to stay in the

contest and take opportunities when it mattered most.

Whilst there was a hunger to strive for strong individual performances, we recognised to be a good

team we needed to bring a more self-less approach to our cricket. We had a strong emphasis on

playing for Prahran Cricket Club vs just the 2nd XI. This is something we spoke about last season but was

brought to life through Andrew Horsefield’s engagement in the coaching program.

From a captain’s perspective, seeing the 2nd XI being recognised as a premiership team is obviously

pleasing but not one of the objectives we really set out to do. The key focus as a development side is

to ensure opportunities are provided to committed Prahran cricketers who want to push to the next

level. I’d like to think we got this part right in both our communication and actions, with having players

ready to go for 1st XI cricket at the back end of the season when they were called upon.

On a personal note, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Chris Williamson (Life Member) for his

administration support in a challenging role, all committee members, volunteers, match-day help, and

our sponsors. To our coaches Julien, Bryce, Dimi, and Hempy your knowledge and time commitment

has been invaluable to the group and is clearly reflected in players wanting to play for you and also

each other.

From a 2nd XI perspective a special mention to Justin Graham who has arguably been our match-day

coach over the last 2 seasons, driving the extra competitiveness we have needed in our toughest

moments. Further notable mentions to Phil Williamson (Life Member) for match day curating and more,

and our loyal 2nd XI scorer Karl Hieser (Club Legend).

Lastly thank you to all the players for their time commitment and winning games of cricket, whilst

having a lot of fun doing it. I’m a confident the connection amongst the current playing group has all

the foundations of what will see greater successes and importantly lifelong friendships.

Looking ahead to the 2020-21 season, with stability in our

playing group and also a need to recruit in some specialist

areas, my sense is now is the right time to step aside and hand

over the 2nd XI captaincy to a suitable replacement in

Nick Morrey, who has been a strong leader on and off the field.

From a playing a perspective, no one is ever really retired but

the time does feel right to provide an opening and opportunity

for a young player to play at Toorak Park who can push for 1st XI

cricket. If taking 7/78 in the last session vs St Kilda in a semi-final is

my last game for Prahran, then I’m pretty content with the finish line.

Women's 2nd Eleven

After a very strong preseason with sessions at Xavier College during some very cold and wet nights the playing group was keen to get stuck into the season proper. We kicked off the season with two wins in the T20 double header against Carlton Brunswick. The second eleven made great improvements in the T20 competition this season which lead to a semi finals appearance (the first final for PCC women’s second eleven). We had some great performances on an individual level Rebecca Heenan 215 runs and Maddy Stirling 129 runs with the bat. With the ball Alex Clancy bowled with great control to get 12 wickets and Ellen Williams 10 wickets. As a team the girls really started to embrace the T20 format. They improved the way they not only played the T20’s as players but as a collective team. With a bit of luck they could’ve been playing off in a grand final. In the one day format the girls had some fantastic results against the stronger teams but we unfortunately struggled with a bit of consistency especially with the bat. That being said there was still plenty of positives to take out of the one day games. Lauren Innes 93 against EMP was exceptional, which included a partnership of 100plus with Ellen Williams 51. Ava Bennett with 12 wickets and Lauren Innes 11 wickets lead the bowlers. There were still a lot of positives to take away from the season although it was disappointing not to be playing at the pointy end of the season. Once again there was plenty of opportunities for our younger girls from our development squad to play games in the second eleven, especially when we had girls unavailable due to WBBL and underage national championships. All the girls who played in the team this season played with a great attitude and more importantly with a team first mentality. We are always looking to improve and I’m sure with continued hard work then the rewards will come. The future is certainly looking bright for the future of the club with the talent we are continuing to bring through our development squad into premier cricket and being part of the senior program at different stages. To our captain Ava Bennett thank you for your support and congratulations on the way you brought the girls together. You created a great environment for the girls to enjoy being part of the team and give them the opportunity to play at their best. I would like to thank Nigel Parsons and the committee for all their hard work and support and allowing me to be part of Prahran Cricket Club. Also thank you to all the parents and family members who came down to the games, cheered the girls on and did what needed to be done to help things run smoothly but more importantly drove the girls to all their trainings and matches. Special thanks to our team manager David Harrison who took care of everything on match days and much, much more. Your work behind the scenes doesn’t go unnoticed and is very much appreciated I couldn’t have done it without your help. Jan our ground manager at Righetti oval who took care of the ground set up, lunches, drinks etc. thank you for your hard work and chats after games. Thank you to head coach Carl Sandri. You are not only the best coach in premier cricket but one of the best in women’s cricket anywhere in the world. Your results speak for themselves. Thank you so much for all your support, guidance and trust that you put in me. There is no doubt that PCC is the envy of every premier club with the program you run. Our program is the best women’s program in premier cricket. I’ve no doubt that if the first eleven had the opportunity to play in the big dance then we would have a premiership flag hanging from the rafters at Toorak Park.

Men's 3rd XI

It was another really enjoyable season for the PCC 3rd XI this season. After a scintillating start to the season, the PCC 3rd XI hit a roadblock, struggling to win close games during the middle part of the season. However, a great run of form at the backend of the season ensured that the team would make the finals, unfortunately bundled out in the quarter final against Geelong. Highlights for season included:

Nigel Hunt taking 11 wickets and absolutely decimating ladder leaders Melbourne University CC Jacob Serry hitting three sixes in a row (before being caught on the boundary going for his fourth)

and taking 3 wickets against Kingston-Hawthorn Kevin Seth taking 5 wickets in the Quarter Final Will Pike's unbelievable run of form with the bat during February Dulith Hendawitharana's 100 against Melbourne Tom Sudano breaking a 130 year old 3rd XI record for the most dismissals by a wicket-keeper in a

season The infamous spell of bowling at Watson Park.

A massive thanks to Jan Gnatt and John Zarb for their monumental efforts throughout the season. Jan and Zarby are the heart and soul of the 3rd XI and spent extensive time throughout the season helping to ensure that the 3rd XI were able to enjoy their cricket. The 3rds were subject to perfectly clean facilities, brilliant lunches (including Zarby's famous spaghetti bolognaise) and assistance with the covers every week. We cannot thank these two enough. The 3rd XI looks forward to next season.

Women’s 3rd Eleven

This was a new team for Prahran this season. The team was formed with their games in the East One Day

competition commencing in early December. Many of the players involved in the 3rd eleven were from either the

2nd eleven or from the development squad.

Going into the first round, we didn’t have a full side and just pulling enough girls together to for a team to take the

ground. Many of these girls with young teenagers playing against a team of adult women on most occasions.

With such a young team, they were all so excited to post their first win on the board over Heatherdale in round 1.

Heatherdale went on to be a finals team.

The entire team carried all their momentum and energy into the following week. Again, with only just enough

players to take the field, and played yet again another side complete of adult women, the girls showed what

they had and got their second win in a row. With all the girls being so young and already having played a

morning game most weeks, they all showed true dedication and commitment to the team and worked tirelessly

to give it their all for the entire season. Their performances won them a lot of positive feedback and

encouragement from their older opponents and officials.

We had a total of 17 girls take the field for the 3rd XI this season. Thank you greatly to the parents of the girls who

came along every week and were just as enthusiastic to be there as the girls were. The families helped contribute

to the positive atmosphere of this team. And a huge thank to Janice Quinsey for her scoring and team manager

work throughout the season, your help was greatly appreciated.

To the 2nd eleven girls that stepped back to help out when we were short, thanks for all your support to the

younger girls within the team. I know many of them considered you role models and they learnt a lot from you all.

I would also like to thank both Tim White and Carl Sandri for their ongoing support and communication throughout

the season, I truly appreciate it. To Bronwyn Daws, thanks for coming to the home games to make sure the ground

was marked, set up to play and for ensuring that the afternoon tea would be delivered.

Finally, to all the girls who played in the 3rd eleven this season, I appreciate your commitment and dedication to

the season. You have shown tremendous improvement throughout the season and I look forward to seeing

progress further in the future.

Men's 4th Eleven Firstly I would like to thank my fellow Coaches, Captains and the Committee for the opportunity to work with and for them this year, the push to become the club of choice is certainly moving in the right direction. The 4th Eleven side this year ebbed and flowed between young and very young with just a hint at times of the very old, but all who came through the side gave their all on the field and were very committed off. The key aim of 4th eleven was to develop the younger players by providing structure and leadership. We were able to build some real momentum with some clinical wins early in the season, with one highlight being our performance to beat Melbourne CC, chasing 258 in just 63.4 overs, after Melbourne batted into the second day. But I think it was the outright win over Ringwood before Christmas which really announced to the competition and the club that the 4th eleven were building something. The young brigade of Michael Parsons and Max Delaney powered Prahran to a strong position with a 105 run stand. Parsons the victim of a mix up with a big score there for the taking out for 77. Max Delaney however powered through to his first Premier Cricket ton posting 107* and helping us to a lead of 114. With about 40 overs in the day all things would need to go right for us and perhaps in previous years this afternoon may have fizzled out but one of the new players to the club Tom Beasley spinning a web with 5/40 in the second innings and the final wicket to secure the outright falling with 2 overs to go. Winning an outright was a special feeling. Unfortunately it was after Christmas where I returned to Adelaide with my Family, handing the reigns to Justin Graham, but not before a game where I was lucky to skipper two former international cricketers and a bloke with 300 premier games experience. Round 9 skippering Dimi Mascarenhas, Bryce McGain and Justin Graham will stick out as a personal highlight, though the Guard of Honour was very unwarranted. Other than a slip up against Carlton a finals birth stitched up at Christmas was a great achievement. I was honoured to be asked to come and skipper the side for the Semi Final vs a traditional rival in St Kilda. The result obviously didn’t go our way and then we all know what happened to the world following that, but watching Bryce McGain take 5 wickets from first slip was a treat. I was left with this pearl of wisdom “it doesn’t mean never, it just means not now”. The season didn’t finish how we would have liked, but there were so many great moments and achievements, that it would be hard to say it was anything other than a great year. Girl's 4th XI – Development Squad If there was ever a word to completely sum up a season of 2019/20 it would be roller-coaster! Heat, rain,

hail, thunderstorms, smoke and on a few occasions a few players short all made up the season that had

many twists and turns. 4 of the 9 matches played were abandon which proved frustrating at times but only

drove the girls to train harder. Led fearlessly by Ellen Williams week in week out the girls wore their hearts on

their sleeves till and were willing to fight until the last ball of their season was bowled.

We came tantalisingly close to victory on a number of occasions but fell short at the final hurdle however

this season wasn’t measured on wins and losses but instead based off personal and team development.

The season became part of the building blocks to an exciting future for the program with the very young

group proving that hard work and dedication are the cornerstones to our success moving forward. The

program is also creating a leadership pathway within the club with the older players within the

development program mentoring the younger girls aiding their transition into the program.

A number of personal accolades were achieved on field this year with Ellen Williams and Maddy Heitlinger

surpassing 50 as well as Oliva Cooper and Sahasni Wanigatunga being ever reliable with the ball.

As the season wore on the girls gained more and more momentum on and off the field, numbers attending

training were getting stronger and stronger and a number of new players were introduced into the group

which only increased the excitement around the group. The energy of the younger girls only enhances the

drive to succeed within the group and encourages every one of us to raise the bar even higher.

I would personally like to acknowledge the contributions of Mark Cooper (our team manager) and Tim

White for their unwavering support and tireless efforts throughout the season, without their dedication and

time a program like this wouldn’t be possible. At times there was a desperate ring around in the hours

before the game but with their contributions meant that the team was never left too short.

As everyone knows junior sport cannot be run without volunteers and the tireless efforts of our sensational

parent group umpiring, food preparation, scoring and ground setup the parent group could be called

upon at any point to lend a helping hand so a massive thankyou to you all.

The future is bright for our women’s development program and will continue to go from strength to strength

in the coming season as we look to take the next step into finals cricket and beyond!
