Purpose of this Course • The purpose of this course is to provide a

common understanding of the practicum process as administered at KI.

• At the completion of this course, the member should – Know what practicums are – What qualifies as a practicum and what does not – How to fill out the practicum form – What the members responsibilities are to fulfill the

requirements of the practicum – Know where to direct questions on the process

Why Practicums?

3

Acts 20:35

In everything I showed you that by working hard in this manner you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’

What is a Practicum?

“Practicums are the practical, learning-by-doing, “laboratory” courses and exercises which have been tailored to fit the individual’s preparation for ministry.”

(KI Handbook, p. 38)

Page 5: Practicum Introduction Course Practicums101

What is a Practicum? • Two Types of Practicums

– Pre-defined Practicums: • Study/Work tour of Israel • Rehabilitation Project • Missionary Outreach

– Proposed Practicums • Conduct Home Bible Study • Service (Usher, worship, Elder) at your local Church • Volunteer for civic activities (soup kitchen, project

cleanups)

Page 6: Practicum Introduction Course Practicums101

What is a Practicum? • For any Practicum, a proposal must be submitted

• The proposal will include the description of the

project, its Biblical basis, Interpersonal aspect, personal aspect, the beginning and ending date and at least one journal entry providing a summery of the experience, benefits, impacts to the member and others.

The Practicum Process

7

Page 8: Practicum Introduction Course Practicums101

How Practicums are Evaluated • Hours/week over the period of performance,

member disclosed • Complexity of task (multiplier), practicum

coordinator matches up with similar or identical activities in database

• Total hours anticipated on project * Complexity multiplier = K-Credits

8

Page 9: Practicum Introduction Course Practicums101

How Practicums are Evaluated • Reserve the right to adjust based on unforeseen

factors – Address what we don’t know or haven’t encountered

• Several items have fixed K-Credit assignments – Way of Agape

Page 10: Practicum Introduction Course Practicums101

How Practicums are Evaluated • Example

– Small Group leader LTB 24, 3 hrs per week, 1/26/13 – 7/26/13 results in 26 weeks * 3 hrs/wk = 78 hrs * 6 Complexity = 465 Rounded up/25 to 475

– Israel Trip Talmidim Expedition, 60 hrs/wk, 2/4/13 – 2/20/13 results in

2 weeks * 60 hrs/wk = 137 hrs * 8 Complexity = 1097 Rounded up/25 to 1100

– Way of Agape SD503 WoA, 2 hrs/Wk, 11/4/12 – 2/3/13 results in 13 weeks * 2 hrs/wk = 26 hrs * 6 Complexity = 156 Flat Rate Credit of 250

Practicum Coordinator’s Job • Here to provide credit for work performed for God’s

Kingdom – Thus, not a gate keeper for what is good enough – Thus, here to make sure all the submissions are in order,

not to judge worthiness

11 Coordinator is not here to judge worthiness of activity, just give credit

Page 12: Practicum Introduction Course Practicums101

Practicum Coordinator’s Job • Members responsibility to be honest

– It should go without saying that all submissions are truthful and assumed to be that way. There might be honest mistakes, to which the coordinator should challenge for clarification.

– This especially is true of partially complete practicum's, or ones that end up requiring either larger or smaller number of hours to execute.

– If the hours/week are different than what was proposed, then it should be noted in summary so K-Credits can be modified.

• Practicum K-Credits are about service to others in concert with the Holy Spirit. 12

Page 13: Practicum Introduction Course Practicums101

Appeals Process • From time to time there will be conflict about what

some believe to be right and others to be wrong (injustice) – Good people can disagree and all still be good

• As such, this appeals process provides an alternate path to promoting equality and justice within the Practicum award system.

• Process – Practicum is accepted/rejected and awarded credit based

on standard process – If the outcome is contested, then the issue will be

forwarded to KI Dean of Students 13

Page 14: Practicum Introduction Course Practicums101

Appeal Process • Should a member believe a practicum has been

awarded unjustly then either the member or coordinator can submit an appeal

• Reasons for appeal may include – Rejected as being out of the practicum scope – Awards amount being either too high or too low for the

effort/benefit provided

14

Page 15: Practicum Introduction Course Practicums101

Appeal Process • Appeal Process

– Initiate an email to KI Dean of Students with the practicum #, practicum description and the details of what is being contested. All parties involved must be cc’ed on the initial request.

– The opposing opinion may then respond within seven days on email, again cc’ing all parties involved.

– The KI Dean of Students will evaluate the merit of each position, calling upon KI policies and practices and render a decision within 14 days.

Begin Date Select the calendar date of start

End Date Select the calendar date of finish

Hrs/Week Approx or estimated hours per week

Page 25: Practicum Introduction Course Practicums101

Filling out the practicum • Title

– Provide a title that is descriptive, yet short. Should not include date related references

• Description – The who, what, how, and why of the practicum. There

should be enough substance that the coordinator can determine the expected complexity of the task (for the multiplier). Often times this is expected attendees or number of people impacted by an outreach. Often times this is expected results or attendance. The final entry should include corrections between expected and actual.

Page 26: Practicum Introduction Course Practicums101

Filling out the practicum • Biblical Relevance

– Provide Biblical references to define why God has called you to do this. Often times this is more emotional of a calling and correspondingly personal.

• Interpersonal Aspects – How do you expect the practicum effect you and others.

Keep in mind that the summary entry at the end of the practicum should reference changes to this expectation.

Page 27: Practicum Introduction Course Practicums101

Filling out the practicum • Personal Aspects

– How do you expect the practicum to effect you personally. What do you hope to get out of it and how do you expect to feel

• Begin Date – The date you start activities on this practicum.

For missions, this might be prep work prior to departure

• End Date – When you expect the practicum to be completed.

Page 28: Practicum Introduction Course Practicums101

Filling out the practicum • Hrs/Week

– Enter the expected hours per week that you will be dedicating time to the practicum.

– This is an estimate and should be corrected (if necessary) in the summary journal entry.

– Keep in mind that often, there are disproportional periods of activity. For example, prep time for a missions trip might be 4 hrs per week for two week prior to departure, but 40 hours per week while on travel for two weeks. If this is the case, then average the hours (4hrs X 2weeks + 40hrs X 2weeks = 88hrs, divided by 4 weeks for the whole practicum is 22hrs per week for 4 weeks)

FAQs • How long do I have to close out the practicum?

– The practicum should be closed out within a year of scheduled completion

– The practicum coordinator will send out reminders, when the member doesn’t close out their practicum as scheduled. A new end date can be provided to the coordinator who will update the record and then use it for a new reminder.

43

Page 44: Practicum Introduction Course Practicums101

FAQs • Can I request credit from years past?

– The limitations on Practicum K-Credits are that the member must have their bronze before starting a practicum for credit. If the member is performing a service and receive their bronze during the middle of the activity, then a practicum can be submitted dated from the time of their bronze award to the end of the service, and credit will be given pro rata for the time from the bronze to the completion of the service.

• Should I submit my practicum before I do the service, during the service or when the service is completed? – Any of the three is fine. Keep in mind that you must

have been awarded a bronze for credit.

44

Page 45: Practicum Introduction Course Practicums101

FAQs • What if my membership lapses during a

practicum? – Without access to Study Center, you cannot make

entries. Six months of a membership expired status will cause the practicum to close. Should the member choose to re-join, a new practicum can be submitted for the activities.

• How do I find out if my activity is acceptable to be a practicum? – Probably the easiest way is to submit a practicum, if it

is unacceptable, then the coordinator will respond you saying so. Also, careful review of this presentation should help you define an acceptable practicum 45

Page 46: Practicum Introduction Course Practicums101

FAQs • What if I disagree with either the credits or the

rejection of a practicum? – Recourse is provided through an appeal process, just

indicate to the coordinator you disagree (or would like the issue to be reviewed/elevated) and the coordinator will submit the issue to the Ki Dean of Students for adjudication.

• What happens when a practicum needs to be deleted? – The coordinator will accept and close the practicum

issuing out 1 K-Credit to the member

46

Page 47: Practicum Introduction Course Practicums101

Summary • Practicums are a method to get credit for activities

that Christians already do – Part of the Koinonos Track, not KI centric (credit is given

for any God centered selfless service). • The responsibility of submitting, updating, and

completing the practicum is that of the member. • If there are questions, issues, concerns or

additional information is needed, please contact the Practicum Coordinator

[email protected] • God Bless you all
