FROM THE NORTHWOODS LEAGUE

Dear Huskies Fans,

Welcome to Wade Stadium and the fifteenth season of Duluth Huskies action in the 24th season of play in the Northwoods League. “The Wade” continues to be one of the finest venues in all of America to view a baseball game.

Not only will you see some of the finest amateur baseball talent on the planet, Wade Stadium is also where you will likely see the future stars of professional baseball. Over the years, 13 Huskies have made it the Major Leagues. And, at the time this welcome letter was written, the Northwoods League just had its 170th alum reach the Major League level.

I, along with owner Michael Rosenzweig and the entire Duluth Huskies staff, hope you enjoy today’s Northwoods League action, sample some ballpark fare at the concessions stands, or pick up a souvenir to show your loyalty to Duluth’s hometown team. Come back often, and when the team is on the road go to www.northwoodsleague.com to connect to the Northwoods League’s high-definition webcasts to catch Huskies action all season long.

I look forward to seeing all of you on July 18th to celebrate our 23rd Northwoods League All-Star Game in Wausau, Wisconsin. And, as always, have a great time out with the Huskies!

Sincerely,

Gary HooverPresidentNorthwoods League

FROM THE PRESIDENT AND OWNER

Dear Huskies Fans and Supporters,

On behalf of the management and staff we welcome you to historic Wade Stadium. This iconic ballpark was constructed during the Great Depression. A little history from Wikipedia: The U.S. federal government used the WPA to fund projects to boost employment. One of these projects was the removal

of the brick roadbed from Grand Avenue, which was then paved with asphalt. During the fall of 1940, road crews removed 381,000 bricks from the surface of Grand Avenue. Another WPA crew used these bricks to build Wade Stadium. A construction budget totaling $163,232 was set. But, due to cost overruns, the final cost of the stadium was $230,880. During construction, the project received several bailouts. One bailout came from Duluth’s newly elected mayor, Edward H. Hatch, who purchased the materials needed to finish construction. There has been a great number of memorable baseball games played at the Wade. As a once host to minor league teams from the Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, and Cincinnati Reds, we have never lacked for talent and the excitement that baseball brings to summer in Duluth. Today you get to see the best of the collegiate baseball players who come from around the country to spend their summer playing for the Huskies and the other teams of the Northwoods League. They are a hardworking, nose to the grindstone bunch of players who hope they will be noticed by one of the many scouts that grace our ballpark on most nights. More than just baseball, the Wade experience encompasses Wade Plaza, in between game antics, contests, games and of course the Kennel Klub, our enhanced food and beverage outing, while you watch the game. Our concourse has a great selection of baseball fare and drinks to suit everyone’s taste. From fireworks to wrestling, there is always something going on at the Wade. It goes without saying that we are pleased to see you here to watch Duluth Huskies baseball in this family friendly environment. As you enjoy this game, please take note of our advertisers and sponsors. Show your support for them as they help make baseball available to us all. We are honored that you have chosen to be with the Duluth Huskies to watch the greatest game on turf. Have a wonderful time and please come back often to visit us.

Play Ball!!!

By: Dale LegaspiHuskies player ‘03-’04, Assistant coach ‘15-present

As the Duluth Huskies embark on the fifteenth season in franchise history, it’s only appropriate to take a look back at the previous decade and a half of baseball here at Wade Stadium.

It seems contradictory that something that could be described as groundbreaking— or even new—could center on an old, brick stadium built as part of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s famed program to pull the country out the Great Depression. However, it was that so-called “New Deal” that produced Frank Wade Municipal Stadium, and the summer of 2003 saw the city welcome a new resident to Wade Stadium for the first time in its history.

Gone were the various iterations—affiliated, semi-pro, independent, etc.—of the Dukes and in were…a bunch of college kids. It took some explanation to a city and a fan base that had just been burned by a team basically sneaking out under the cover of night, but once they understood the Huskies were a completely different operation, they bought in and have been

dedicated supporters ever since.

Despite being a mere curiosity in that first summer, fans filled Wade Stadium for the home opener on June 7, 2003 and continued to come out and support that first hastily-assembled team as it struggled its way to a 24-39 finish— the lowest win total in franchise history. Despite the team’s lack of success, it featured nine players who would go on to play various levels of professional baseball, including Mikela Olsen who was the team’s first draft pick (Florida Marlins, 2003) and Joe Bisenius, who would become the Huskies’ first Major Leaguer four years later.

The 2004 season started much the same as 2003 had ended, but as the summer progressed new faces finished their college seasons and made their way north. So, too, did the team’s place in the standings, and for the first time, the Huskies made the playoffs, ultimately winning the North Division. Behind a lineup featuring multiple future professional baseball players and a pitching staff anchored by two future big leaguers in Doug Mathis and MLB All Star Mark Melancon, the 2004 Huskies proved that it was possible to build a winner in Duluth.

Since 2004, the team has reached the playoffs four more times (2006, 2007, 2013 and 2015), winning the North Division once again in 2013 and continuing to churn out professional-level talent right here in the Twin Ports.

However, even as the Huskies rolled on, the stadium aged and ultimately struggled to survive after the flooding of 2012. Fortunately, in 2014, it received massive structural retrofitting and a number of other necessary upgrades. Most notable among the improvements was the installation of artificial field turf, which would ensure that even with the

area’s notoriously fickle weather, local high school, college and amateur teams would still be able to host games.

For the Huskies, though, it has meant more opportunities to bring premier amateur baseball talent to Duluth and the surrounding communities. What would have been a guaranteed rainout every year previously, has become a mere delay, as the team has gotten through two seasons without a single home game lost to inclement weather.

The names and faces change year to year, but the beginning of every summer sees players in programs at every level of NCAA, NAIA and junior college baseball from around the country make the journey to Duluth to don the Huskies’ blue and make the Twin Ports area their home for the summer.

While a number of these players are as far away from home for as extended a period of time as they have ever been, they are hardly going it alone thanks to the tradition that has become the lynchpin of the Duluth Huskies experience: host families.

As trying as 72 games in 76 days can be for college players used to playing about 50 over the course of four months, the action on the field is only a small part

of what comprises the Duluth Huskies experience. The field provides the place to refine baseball skills, but the locale provides the enriching life experience of spending a summer in the Northwoods League.

All throughout Duluth and the surrounding communities, empty nesters become parents with full houses for three months, only children from other parts of the country gain new sets of siblings, and families of all sizes gain college-aged sons. What begins as a summer arrangement, though, often ends up lasting a lifetime.

The annual MLB draft and professional debuts have become as much a part of the family experience as college acceptances and weddings. A number of host families from those initial years have continued to house players every summer since, working alongside the front office and coaching staff to ensure the Huskies experience remains as cohesive and fulfilling as it has been from the start.

Additionally, through a full slate of annual events at the stadium and public appearances around the Twin Ports area, players learn first-hand what it means to be a member of this northern Minnesota community. While they may not be the professionals of yesteryears, every player

who has ever suited up for the Huskies has been a full-time college student who chose to forego his summer vacation to come play baseball for free.

It’s that type of workman-like mentality and dedication to their craft that have led different groups of players north each summer. Host families make the area home, and fans bring them back. The symbiotic relationship between team and community lives on. Here’s to another 15 years.

Historic Wade Municipal Stadium was built in 1941 and opened it’s gates on July 16 of that year. The original name of the ballpark was Municipal All Sports Stadium. The city renamed it Wade Stadium in 1954 after Frank Wade.

The wall surrounding the ballpark is made of 381,000 bricks taken from Grand Avenue after the street was torn up in 1940.

We have put together some rules and policies to make your visit to the Wade more enjoyable.

animalsThe Huskies team up with Animal Allies for one game during the season which allows our fans to bring their well-behaved pet (not in heat) to the ballpark. Otherwise, animals are not allowed at Wade Stadium unless it is a service animal with verifiable paperwork.

Exceptional education for everyday good. It’s an ordinary world, but every day extraordinary acts take place here. Those brave enough to take action march on, like Saints do. Making sacrifices to make a difference. Imagine how those acts could impact your life’s work. Where they could take you.

That’s what you learn at The College of St. Scholastica. Exceptional education for everyday good.
