Hell Hath No Limits, Unless We Reconsider
Barry, Wendell. "Faustian Economics: Hell Hath No Limits." Harper's Magazine. The Harper's
Magazine Foundation, May 2008. Web. 25 August 2011.
Wendell Berry wants us to understand human’s tendency to think of themselves as
limitless creatures. He believes that humans see themselves as higher powers than any other
beings and that we make decisions for the entire world based on our human needs. For example,
he believes that humans use the world’s natural resources as if they will always be available to
us. Natural resources can only be used for a certain amount of years until they do not exist. He
thinks that humans are using these resources as if they do not have limits because humans only
want what is best for them at the moment. Once the natural resources have diminished, the
humans alive at the point in time will have to search for resources somewhere else. According to
Berry, this makes us selfish, since we are only concerned about ourselves and not the humans
that will live after us. He explains that humans have lost their “neighborliness, stewardship,
thrift, temperance, generosity, care, kindness, friendship, loyalty, and love” for others. A simple
review of our lives should make us revaluate how we can become these words in our daily lives
again.
This article is culturally significant because humans are wasting resources in order to
improve the economy. The part of human culture this article is pertaining to is the economy,
which has to do with all humans because money is a necessity to life. Although it is a challenge
to simply change the way of our society, it is an important factor of the world’s future. Limiting
ourselves to using a restricted amount of natural resources is worth considering because these
resources will not always subsist. We can gain a longer time to use these resources if we limit
5
our consumption. By creating other sources of power and fuel, we can prolong the use of the
natural resources all over the world. It is significant because almost all areas of our world are
dependent on the use of natural resources. Cars, which exist in all parts of society, need oil.
Students at schools and universities need to have paper to complete assignments. People’s choice
to reconsider the consumption of natural resources is critical for the world’s future inhabitants.

Taking a New Path of Education
Thompson, Clive. "How Khan Academy Is Changing the Rules of Education." Wired Magazine.
Conde Nast Digital, 15 July 2011. Web. 10 Nov. 2011.
Thompson believes that there is a new era to education. Khan Academy is an online
approach to teach students new ideas and increase their success rate. After interviewing students
and their teacher, Thompson realized that this website is allowing students to overachieve faster
than they could in a typical classroom. Thompson believes that Khan Academy is increasing the
students’ ability to do mathematical problems because of its one on one teaching. This permits
the each of the students to have more attention and help individually, which leads to an increase
of scores. Thompson explains how the students are doing mathematical problems that are usually
taught in high school or even college. He believes that this technological advance is the future in
education. Thompson states, “his foundation had researched unemployment and found math to
be a significant stumbling block” when referring to Bill Gates’ foundation. This is simply
another reason why Thompson believes that this new form of education on the internet is
extremely necessary for our nation’s students, since they will be our future employees.
This article is significant to our culture because our nation’s students will become the
future adults and workers in the United States. To enhance our employees’ abilities and
knowledge, it is in our best interest to educate them to their greatest ability while they are in
school. The area of culture that this article examines is the entire nation because education
affects everyone. Every child must attend school and every other citizen will parent, employ, or
have some sort of relationship with these children. Because education affects so many different
people, it is important to realize how much of an impact this Khan Academy and other online
7
education can educate our nation’s future leaders. With an improvement of everyday learning,
students will be more equipped to tackle daily problems. The improvement can increase our
employment rate and therefore economy. The result of higher education in our nation is a better
future for everyone who lives here.
