12. Explain why the food pyramid is shaped the way that it is. Explain both the Triangular shape of the pyramid as a whole, AND why the food categories are shown as different sized wedges of the pyramid. The pyramid shape indicates that people eat different amounts of food. The smaller top would represent smaller quantities of food being eaten on a daily basis, and the larger bottom would represent larger amounts of food being eaten. The different size wedges represent the amount of each type of food group that should be eaten. For example, people at the bottom (who eat large amounts of food) should be eating more grains than people at the top (who eat less), but by percentage, the amount of each food group that you eat should be the same, regardless of what your total dietary intake is.

16. Label the diagram with the following terms:

Bronchioles TracheaLung Alveoli

17. Describe why smoking is harmful. Include the following words in your answer. CIRCLE each word in your answer.

Alveoli Chemical(s)Lungs Carcinogen(s)Second hand Tar

Smoking is harmful because cigarette smoke contains many (over 4000) different chemicals, some of which are known carcinogens, which means that they are known to cause cancer. When smoke enters the lungs, it leaves deposits of tar and other residue on parts of the lungs, including the bronchioles and the alveoli, which makes it difficult for the lungs to absorb oxygen, or exchange carbon dioxide.
