Question: 4

Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:

Captain Parrol Hartroy stood at the advanced post of his picket-guard, talking in low tones with the

sentinel. A man approached them from the direction of the camp, carelessly whistling, and was promptly

halted by the soldier. He was evidently a civilian.

While the sentinel had been examining the civilian’s pass the captain had eyed the latter narrowly.

“Surrender,” said the captain as calmly as a slight breathlessness from exertion would permit, “or you

die.”

“The pass is a forgery,” the officer said, interrupting. “I am Captain Hartroy- and you are Dramer Brune.”

“Yes, I am Dramer Brune, a spy, and your prisoner. I have on my person, as you will soon discover a plan

of your fort and its armament, a statement of the distribution of your men and their number, a map of the

approaches, showing the positions of all your outposts.”

The next day early in the morning the two men, captor and captive, sat in the tent of the former.

“Mr. Brune,” said Captain Hartroy, “you probably do not understand why I recognized you in your

disguise, nor how I was aware of your name.”

He continued “My knowledge of you goes back to the autumn of 1861. At that time you were a soldier in

an Ohio regiment- a brave and trusted soldier. To the surprise and grief of your officers and comrades you

Page 3: Practice Paper (Chapter)-1 Class-X · Practice Paper (Chapter)-1 Class-X Question: 1 (Do not spend more than 30 minutes on this question) Write a composition (300-350 words) on any

deserted and went over to the enemy. Soon afterward you were captured in a skirmish, recognized, tried

by court-martial and sentenced to be shot”.

“One dark and stormy night I had just returned from a long, fatiguing march and was put on guard over

you. You sat in a corner and my orders were to kill you if you attempted to rise. As the long silent hours

wore away I had yielded to the demands of nature by falling asleep. I myself incurred the death penalty by

sleeping at the post of duty.”

The captain patiently said, “Mr. Brune, whatever your conscience may permit you to be, you saved my

life. You pitied my fatigue. You let me sleep, watched over me, and as the time drew near for the relief-

guard to come and detect me in my crime, you gently woke me up.”

“I ought to have confessed my fault in order to relate the story of your magnanimity; it might have

procured you a pardon. A hundred times I resolved to do so, but shame prevented me from doing that.

Well, Heaven forgive me!”

Captain Hartroy turned to the army officer and said: “This gentleman is a deserter and a spy; he is to be

shot dead in the presence of the troops.”

Half an hour later a startling sound of a volley of musketry was heard. A little later, a single pistol shot

was heard nearby. It was the shot with which Captain Hartroy renounced his life which in conscience he

could no longer keep. In compliance with the note that he left for the officer who succeeded him, he was

buried, like the deserter and spy, without military honors; and in the solemn shadow of the mountain the

two slept well in long-forgotten graves.

Question: 1 (b)

‘It is better to live a life of cautious progress than to lead a life full of risks’.

For the View:

It is better to lead a life of cautious progress because:

(i) It allows us to anticipate harm before it occurs and therefore, protects us;

(ii) When an activity raises threats of harm to human health or the environment, precautionary

measures should be taken in advance because the ill-effects of these activities cannot be reversed;

(iii) Taking risks without undertaking necessary precautions can do uncontrollable damage which

could harm not only our present but also future;

(iv) Every small effort builds on the next so that magnificent things can be created step by step with

caution;

walking at least 5 to 8 Kilometers…the picture reflects the reality of water crisis in India as has been

projected by NITI Aayog in its latest report…..the report has warned that demand for potable water will

outstrip supply by 2030 if remedial steps are not taken immediately…..twenty-one cities, including Delhi,

Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad will run out of groundwater by the end of 2020, affecting 100 million

people…..the critical groundwater resources, which account for 40 per cent of India’s water supply, are

being depleted at unsustainable rates and up to 70 per cent of India’s water supply is contaminated…..this

contaminated water is responsible for an increase in the number of waterborne diseases…..besides, the

rapidly declining groundwater levels and limited policy action by the government is likely to cause a

significant food security risk for the country…..it is high time that we as individuals understand the value

of water and prevent its wastage and the government should initiate various schemes aimed at enhancing

Lord Oakhurst lay dying in the oak chamber in the eastern wing of Oakhurst Castle. He was thinking of

days gone by, when he wooed and won his beautiful your wife, who was then but a charming and

innocent girl. How clearly and minutely those scenes rose up at the call of his memory.

He remembered how the young lady had, with girlish shyness and coyness, at first hesitated, and

murmured something to herself about “an old bald-headed galoot,” but when he told her that to him life

without her would be a blasted mockery, and that his income was Rs. 50,000 a year, she threw herself on

to him and froze there with the tenacity of a tick on a brindled cow, and said, with tears of joy, “Henry, I

am thine.”

A carriage drove rapidly up the avenue stopped at the door. Sir Ecerhard FitzArmond, the famous London

Physician, who had been telegraphed for, alighted and quickly ascended the marble steps. Lady Oakhurst

met him at the door, her lovely face expressing great anxiety and grief. “Oh, Sir Everhard, I am so glad

you have come. He seems to be sinking rapidly. Did you bring the cream almonds I mentioned in the

telegram?”

Sir Everhard approached the bedside of his patient and laid his hand gently on this sick man’s head. A

shade of feeling passed over his professional countenance as he gravely and solemnly pronounced these

words: “Madam, your husband has croaked.”

But soon his meaning flashed upon her, and she seized an axe that her husband was accustomed to keep

by his bedside as a weapon against his enemies, and struck open Lord Oakhurst’s cabinet containing his

private papers, and with eager hands opened the document which she took there from. Then, with a wild,

unearthly shriek, she fell senseless to the floor. Sir Everhard picked up the paper and read its contents. It

was Lord Oakhurst’s will, bequeathing all his property to a scientific institution which should have for its

object the invention of a means for extracting alcohol from sawdust.

Page 11: Practice Paper (Chapter)-1 Class-X · Practice Paper (Chapter)-1 Class-X Question: 1 (Do not spend more than 30 minutes on this question) Write a composition (300-350 words) on any

Sir Everhard glanced quickly around the room. No one was in sight. Dropping the will, he rapidly

transferred some valuable ornaments and rare specimens of gold and silver filigree work from the centre

table to his pockets, and rang the bell for the servants.

Sir Everhard FitzArmond descended the stairway of Oakhurst Castle and passed out into the avenue that

led from the doorway to the great iron gates of the park. Lord Oakhurst had been a great sportsman during

his life and always kept a well-stocked kennel of curs, which now rushed out from their hiding places and

with loud yelps sprang upon the physician, burying their fangs in his lower limbs and seriously damaging

his apparel.

Sir Everhard, started out of his professional dignity gave vent to a most horrible and blighting CURSE

and ran with great swiftness to his carriage and drove off towards the city.
