Presenter
Presentation Notes
Great idea to begin with a skill that takes practice to achieve success. As Adriane mentioned juggling, or I thought about a computer game that involves practice to get better…you may have one pulled up and on the screen and play a couple of rounds…. These are great lead ins to WHY we need practice.

Remember: Focus on being “Casually Intentional” Bullet 1: Started by Educators not Technologists, Teacher demographic is an older demographic. At trade shows and conferences people recognize the name and say that they used to use the floppy discs. Also, as technology unfolds we are continually keeping pace and ensuring that the contents and rigor are maintained as the technology changes… 8 track, cassette, DVD… We have over 100 Years in Adult Education! Bullet 2: All of our solutions are built from the ground up! Each one has its own flavor. They are all individualist and style-loaded. This is a real benefit for the instructors and administration and all of the solutions can be assigned and managed from on system. All reports can be run from one system for all students working in all of the solutions. Bullet 3: This means that whether your student is working in class, through distance-learning, or working on their own they will have access to Aztec solutions. NEXT

Let’s review our roadmap for today’s session…

Participant Activity:

Share some of your own ‘practice’ experiences.

What are your own best practices for offering practice exercises or learning opportunities for your students in preparing for the GED Test.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Encourage the participants to share their own personal ‘practice’ experiences, i.e. a sport, a hobby, i.e. juggling, or a talent, i.e. piano, painting, etc. Give them 5-10 minutes to share aloud their own experiences. Provide 15 minutes for groupings (2-3 or as the room allows for it) to discuss & share their own practice experiences within their programs, specifically as they help their students prepare for the GED Test. Select a ‘recording secretary’ to record on a white board (if not available, use computer screen) to share summary of findings. Save this slide/listing for end of presentation.

Needs of the Adult Learner

• Individualized Instruction

• Consistent, reliable feedback

• A degree of independence and self-direction

• Consistent, sequential success experiences in learning……Nothing Teaches Like Success

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Quick review of this – focusing on bullet number 4… experiencing success is a huge factor for our adult learners – this motivates and encourages the learner to go to the next level of learning. Involve the learner in diagnosis and prescription, always use mini measures that are relatable and communicable, help students visualize progress in terms of score gains, time. Specific sub-skills or competencies, and fluency of specific skills or skill sets, seeing and feeling progress.

Deliberate Practice: What It Is and Why You Need It

To learn any new skill or gain expertise you need to practice, practice, practice. There isn’t much debate about that.

But here’s what you might not know: scientific research shows that the quality of your practice is just as important as the quantity.

And, more interestingly, these scientists also believe that expert-level performance is primarily the result of expert-level practice NOT due to innate talent.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Bullet 1 – Researchers who have investigated expert and novice performance have uncovered important distinctions between deliberate practice and other activities such as play or repetition. Deliberate practice is not the same as rote repetition. Rote repetition – simply repeating a task – will not by itself improve performance. Deliberate practice involves focus, rehearsal and repetition – Practice is necessary for acquiring expertise. Bullet 2 – Talk here about GED Testing service and the collaboration with them to develop GED Flash Bullet 3 – Expert level practice – associate this with Ged Flash and GED testing service being the experts at GED test development and Aztec being the expert at GED preparation. Bullet 4 – Sum all of this up with number 4 – Powerful in that it give the test taker the confidence and ability to come into the testing environment ready and prepared.
Page 8: Practice for Knowledge Towards GED Success...prepare for the test. Make sure to announce how GED Flash came about…from GEDTS surveys of their students, over 75% wanted more practice

Deliberate Practice

• Deliberate Practice occurs when an individual INTENTIONALLY repeats an activity in order to improve performance.

• Deliberate practice consists of activities purposely designed to improve performance

The claim of the DP framework is that such behavior is NECESSARY to achieve high levels of expert performance.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
It doesn’t matter what subject you are teaching, differences in students’ performance are affected by how much they engage in deliberate practice. Deliberate practice involves attention, rehearsal and repetition and leads to new knowledge or skills that can later be developed into more complex knowledge and skills.
Page 9: Practice for Knowledge Towards GED Success...prepare for the test. Make sure to announce how GED Flash came about…from GEDTS surveys of their students, over 75% wanted more practice

Benefits of Deliberate Practice

Practice is important for teaching and learning in at least five ways:

1. Practice greatly increases the likelihood that students will permanently remember new information.

2. Practice increases student facility or automaticity (learning to apply elements of knowledge automatically, without reflection).

3. When students practice solving problems, they increase their ability to transfer practiced skills to new and more complex problems.

4. Practice helps students acquire expertise in subject matter.

5. Cognitive gains from practice often bring about motivation for more learning.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
2. Automaticity is usually only achieved through extensive rehearsal and repetition. Automaticity frees up the learners cognitive resources to handle more challenging tasks. Practice also frees our brains to process more challenging information and problems. For example when you memorize the multiplication table and can retrieve it automatically, working memory is freed to do more complicated computations. Practice can improve one’s working memory and enhance learning academic skills. 4. Practice helps to distinguish novices from experts in any given tasks or academic subject. Teachers should think of practice not as rote repetition, but as deliberate, goal-directed rehearsal paired with reflection on problem-solving processes. Teachers should always design practice activities with the goal of transferring knowledge to new and more complex problems in mind.
Page 10: Practice for Knowledge Towards GED Success...prepare for the test. Make sure to announce how GED Flash came about…from GEDTS surveys of their students, over 75% wanted more practice

General Recommendations for Practice and Instruction

• Teachers should design practice tasks with students existing knowledge in mind.

• Students receive the greatest benefits from practice when they are provided with timely and descriptive feedback.

• Students should have repeated opportunities to practice a task through practicing other tasks like it.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Research suggests that several conditions must be in place in order for practice activities to be most effective in moving students closer to skillful performance. Each of these can be met with carefully designed instruction. Because practice requires intense, focused effort, students ay not find it inherently enjoyable. Therefore, teachers MUST encourage students to practice and motivate practice by pointing out that practice has actually improved their performance. MOTIVATE STUDENTS WITH PRACTCE NEVER MAKE IT A MUNDANE TASK. When students become frustrated with unrealistic or poorly designed practice problems, they often lose motivation, will not receive the full benefits of the practice they have done, and will be less motivated to attempt future practice problems.

Webb’s Depth of Knowledge

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Teachers ask everyday how do we create rich environments where all students learn at a high level? Webb’s Depth of Knowledge can help teachers meet the challenge. DOK categorizes tasks according to the complexity of thinking required to successfully complete them. Level 1 – Tasks at this level require recall of facts or rote application of simple procedures. Level 2 – At this level a student must make some decisions about his or her approach. Level 3 – At this level of complexity, students must use planning and evidence, and thinking is more abstract. Level 4 – Tasks require the most complex cognitive effort. Regardless of how you define rigor – the important thing is that students are thinking deeply on a daily basis. These thoughts require practice, practice, practice…
