- IR procedure very selectively, favorably and long-lived

- NH3 can be measured also with IR, however very long cuvettes

required, is therefore usually measured electro-chemically

- all parameters measured with heat conductivity require a pressure,

a temperature and a speed correction

- procedure go well with very high CH4-concentrations, it give

however problems, even if H2 is present, very favorably

- the lower 4 procedures are used rather for laboratory instruments,

are also very expensive

Accuracy of the gas cells

Please pay attention with the selection of the measuring technique to the

measuring accuracy!

% of the final value of the measuring range (full scale) or % of the reading

Example1 :

CH4-concentration with a measuring range of 0-100% and 3% accuracy without

information can be called with an actual measured value from 50%:

3% of reading → uncertainty/announcement 48.5 to 51.5 Vol-%

3% of full scale → uncertainty/announcement 47.0 to 53.0 Vol-%

Example 2:

H2S-Sensor with a measuring range of 0 - 2000 ppm and 3% accuracy without

information can be called with an actual measured value of 100 ppm:

3% of reading → uncertainty/announcement 97 to 103 ppm

3% of full scale → uncertainty/announcement 40 to 160 ppm

Measures to increase the accuracy of the gas cells

In all Binder devices there are standard calibration points. If the gas cells will

be calibrated at these points, the accuracy of all values below the calibration

point is related to the calibration point and not to full scale.

Only repetition accuracy can be indicated, since for the calibration a test gas

is used, where composition can be not more precise than +/- 1.0% (test gas

class 1 with certificate)!

Example:

CH4: standard calibration points 0 / 50 / 60 Vol-%

Accuracy between 50 and 60% = +/- 3% of 60 = +/- 1.8 Vol-%

Accuracy between 0 and 50% = +/- 3% of 50 = +/- 1.5 Vol-%(after calibration)

Standard calibration points can be adapted to the application, e.g. set down

to 40/50% for older landfills or set 60% to 95% for biomethane applications.

Measures to increase the accuracy of the gas cells

Example:

H2S: standard calibration points 0 / 100 ppm / 1,500 (4,500) ppm

Accuracy between 0 and 100 ppm = +/- 3% of 100 = +/- 3 ppm

Accuracy between 100 and 1,500 ppm = +/- 3% of 1,500 = +/- 45 ppm(after calibration)

Frequency of calibration:

depends on gas concentrations and frequency of use (= wear of the

electrochemical cells) as well as expectations on accuracy (weekly/ monthly/

2 times per year)

Handling (1)

Don´t use AUTO ZERO function! Use it only when you feel zero point settings

are wrong. Then press AUTO ZERO only when the GA-m is filled with fresh air

and when the instrument is “warm”!

Don´t store the GA-m over night in a cold car! Please store it at min. 1-2 hours

in a warm room before you give “hot” biogas into the analyzer! Otherwise

condensated water damp can influence IR-signal and damage electronics.

Don´t enter closed rooms if you are not sure for sufficient ventilation!

Prevent any drainage of water into the analyzer! Please choose carefully the

sampling point, use additional coalescence filter if required.

Please clean the analyzer with fresh air after each measurement!

Practical Advices for daily Use

Please charge the analyzer at min. once a week! Otherwise electrochemical

cells will not be powered any more and measure wrong values.

Please make sure that gas pressure at the sampling point is below 30 mbar.

Otherwise instrument can get damaged, measured data will be wrong. Please

use a pressure controller in front of the analyzer.

Please make sure that the analyzer is at min. 5-10 minutes ON before starting

re-calibration!

Please make sure that gas pressure at the sampling point is below 30 mbar.

Use the Original Binder pressure controller.

Please use “reset factory delta” only when all test gases are available at site!

When you check the calibration with test gas, don´t recalibrate the cell, when

the shown value is within +/- 2% of expected value.

Please maintain the analyzer according to manufacturer´s recommendation!

Practical Advices for Re-calibration

It is a colorless, very poisonous, flammable gas with the characteristic foul odor of

expired eggs perceptible at concentrations as low as 0.00047 ppm.

H2S is slightly heavier than air; a mixture of H2S and air is explosive. H2S and oxygen

burn with a blue flame to form sulfur dioxide (SO2) and water.

Hydrogen sulfide is slightly soluble in water and acts as a weak acid.

H2S is a highly toxic and flammable gas (flammable range: 4.3 – 46%).

Being heavier than air, it tends to accumulate at the bottom of poorly ventilated

spaces. Although very pungent at first, it quickly deadens the sense of smell, so

potential victims may be unaware of its presence until it is too late.

Hydrogen sulfide is considered a broad-spectrum poison, meaning that it can poison

several different systems in the body, although the nervous system is most affected.

The toxicity of H2S is comparable with that of hydrogen cyanide.

Safety precautionsAt some threshold level, believed to average around 300–350 ppm, the oxidative

enzymes become overwhelmed. Many personal safety gas detectors, such as those

used by utility, sewage and petrochemical workers, are set to alarm at as low as 5 to

10 ppm and to go into high alarm at 15 ppm.

Exposure to lower concentrations can result in eye irritation, a sore throat and

cough, nausea, shortness of breath, and fluid in the lungs. These effects are believed

to be due to the fact that hydrogen sulfide combines with alkali present in moist

surface tissues to form sodium sulfide, a caustic. These symptoms usually go away in

a few weeks.

Long-term, low-level exposure may result in fatigue, loss of appetite, headaches,

irritability, poor memory, and dizziness.

0.00047 ppm is the recognition threshold, the concentration at which 50% of

humans can detect the characteristic odor of hydrogen sulfide

Less than 10 ppm has an exposure limit of 8 hours per day

10–20 ppm is the borderline concentration for eye irritation

50–100 ppm leads to eye damage

At 100–150 ppm the olfactory nerve is paralyzed after a few inhalations, and the

sense of smell disappears, often 320–530 ppm leads to pulmonary edema with the

possibility of death

530–1,000 ppm causes strong stimulation of the central nervous system and rapid

breathing, leading to loss of breathing

800 ppm is the lethal concentration for 50% of humans for 5 minutes exposure

Concentrations over 1,000 ppm cause immediate collapse with loss of breathing,

Ammonia is a colourless gas with a characteristic pungent odour. It´s vapour has a

sharp, irritating, pungent odour that acts as a warning of potentially dangerous

exposure.

Although in wide use, ammonia is both caustic and hazardous. It is used in

commercial cleaning products.

NH3 boils at -33.34 °C at a pressure of 1 atmosphere, so we usually find it as a gas. it

is lighter than air, its density being 0.589 times that of air and is miscible with water.

When mixed with oxygen, it burns with a pale yellowish-green flame.

The basicity of ammonia also is the basis of its toxicity and its use as a cleaner. By

creating a solution with a pH much higher than a neutral water solution, proteins

(enzymes) will denaturate, leading to cell damage, death of the cell, and eventually

death of the organism.

Safety precautionsThe U. S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has set a 15-minute

exposure limit for gaseous ammonia of 35 ppm by volume in air and an 8-hour

exposure limit of 25 ppm by volume.

NIOSH recently reduced the IDLH from 500 to 300 ppm based on recent more

conservative interpretations of original research in 1943. IDLH (Immediately

Dangerous to Life and Health) is the level to which a healthy worker can be exposed

for 30 minutes without suffering irreversible health effects.

The average odour threshold is 5 ppm, well below any danger or damage. Exposure

to very high concentrations of gaseous ammonia can result in lung damage and

death.

Although ammonia is regulated in the U.S. as a non-flammable gas, it still meets the

definition of a material that is toxic by inhalation and requires a hazardous safety

permit when transported in quantities greater than 13,248 l. (Wikipedia)

The toxicity of ammonia solutions does not usually cause problems for humans and

other mammals, as a specific mechanism exists to prevent its build-up in the

bloodstream.

Ammonia is converted to carbamoyl phosphate by the enzyme carbamoyl

phosphate synthetase, and then enters the urea cycle to be either incorporated into

amino acids or excreted in the urine.

However, fish and amphibians lack this mechanism, as they can usually eliminate

ammonia from their bodies by direct excretion.

Ammonia even at dilute concentrations is highly toxic to aquatic animals, and for

this reason it is classified as dangerous for the environment.

It is a gas at standard temperature and pressure and exists in Earth´s atmosphere in

this state, as a trace gas at a concentration of 0.039 percent by volume…

It is also a major source of ocean acidification since it dissolves in water to form

carbonic acid, which is a weak acid …

Carbon dioxide is colorless. At low concentrations, the gas is odorless. At higher

concentrations it has a sharp, acidic odor.

CO2 is an asphyxiant gas and not classified as toxic or harmful in accordance with

Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals standards

of United Nations Economic Commission for Europe by using the OECD Guidelines

for the Testing of Chemicals. In concentrations up to 1% (10,000 ppm) will make

some people feel drowsy. Concentrations of 7% to 10% may cause suffocation,

manifesting as dizziness, headache, visual and hearing dysfunction, and

unconsciousness within a few minutes to an hour.(Wikipedia)

Because it's heavier than air, in locations where the gas seeps from the ground .. it

can collect in sheltered/pocketed locations below average ground level, causing

animals located therein to be suffocated.

Adaptation to increased levels of CO2 occurs in humans. Continuous inhalation of

CO2 can be tolerated at three percent inspired concentrations for at least one

month and four percent inspired concentrations for over a week.

It was suggested that 2.0 percent inspired concentrations could be used for closed

air spaces (e.g. a submarine) since the adaptation is physiological and reversible.

Decrement in performance or in normal physical activity does not happen at this

level.

Acute carbon dioxide physiological effect is hypercapnia or asphyxiation sometimes

known by the names given to it by miners: blackdamp (also called choke damp or

stythe). Blackdamp is primarily nitrogen and carbon dioxide and kills via suffocation

Carbon dioxide differential above outdoor levels at steady state conditions (when

the occupancy and ventilation system operation are sufficiently long that CO2

concentration has stabilized) are sometimes used to estimate ventilation rates per

person.

CO2 is considered to be a surrogate for human bio-effluents and may correlate with

other indoor pollutants. Higher CO2 concentrations are associated with occupant

health, comfort and performance degradation.

ASHRAE Standard 62.1–2007 ventilation rates may result in indoor levels up to

2,100 ppm above ambient outdoor conditions. Thus if the outdoor ambient is 400

ppm, indoor levels may reach 2,500 ppm with ventilation rates that meet this

industry consensus standard. Levels in poorly ventilated spaces can be found even

more (and/or if Binder Service People are not able to solve the problem by

phone) please send a mail – name the Serial-No. of the instrument and give a

short description what is wrong.

Send the analyzer to Innovative/ Binder Ulm with a description of the

problem as detailed as possible.

We open the analyzer and make first check. We prepare a cost estimation for

required repair to you (if it is not covered by warranty). We need an official

order. Only after receipt of your PO we will start with the work.

We repair the analyzer and send the analyzer back to you as soon as possible.

SERVICE (without maintenance contract)As soon as you want to get serviced an instrument, please send a mail to Innovative

– name the Serial-No. of the instrument and ask for next free service date.

We will send you (based on age of the instrument and last service actions) a cost

estimation – contains all work, spares and wearing parts as well as the service data.

You will place the order within 5 days - we confirm and book the instrument in. (If

your order comes later than 5 days, may be a new and later service date can be

confirmed only.)

You need to send the analyzer to Innovative/ Binder Ulm in time, that analyzer will

be here 1-3 days before service date. We open the analyzer and make first check –

may be see that further parts needs a replacement – if yes, we revise our cost

estimation and need a new order from your side. Only after receipt of your new PO

we will start with the work.

We do service and maintenance work and send the analyzer back to you.

which is not covered by the maintenance contract and need an additional

order from your side. Only after receipt of your PO we will start with the

work.

SPARE ANALYZERIf you have a maintenance contract with spare instrument, it will be prepared

for shipment to you in time as soon as the instrument was booked in.

If you have a maintenance contract without spare instrument or there is no

contract at all, you can ask Innovative/Binder, if there is a spare instrument

available. If yes, we can prepare it and send it to you in time, but we will

invoice the spare analyzer.

Please be aware, that the analyzer can work well only when service is done in

time and also all recommended wearing parts are replaced.

How it works for you?Analyzer will be sent to Innovative/ Binder. GasData handles the instrument

under priority – makes all service work and repair (if necessary). Not single

parts will be replaced when damaged (like a transistor), but modules. This will

safe time. All required work will be done. If additional problems will be found,

without a new quotation the damaged parts will be replaced – at a lump sum.

Requirements on the installation place

Switchgear cabinet (24 VDC) for the installation in a safe

area and non-corrosive ambient +5 to + 40°C ambient

temperature (indoors), LEL-monitored by separate means

For outdoor installation a second cabinet is built around.

Gas analyzer must be ordered separately. Two standard

analyzer are available:

1. Type: GA-e, without internal gas pump and without

battery, power supply via docking station (not suited for

portable measurements)

2. Type: GA-m, with standard plug power pack can be

used for portable measurements (after removal of

analyzer all valves close automatically and sampling

sequence stops)

• can be expanded up to 13 measuring points (in a bigger cabinet) with

• 1 digital output module (to be used for the allocation of the measuring points)

can be supplied as an option if data are transmitted via 4-20 mA

• External gassensor 0-100% CH4/0-100% LEL with alarms can be implemented

• Gas feedback into the process optionally possible (with an additional solenoid

valve and if required an additional gas pump)

• gas cooler if gas temperature is above 40°C with coalescence filter for removal

of condensate
