She has dragged us into the modern day too, by getting us set up with facebook (Chiltern Directories) and twitter (@chilterndirect) so please check us out.

Many thanks to Aylesbury Waterside Theatre (Page 30) and Waddesdon Manor (Page 52) for their contributions this month. Both well worth a visit as is the Art Expedition at Tiggywinkles (Page 9) and a big thanks to Tiggywinkles ©Les Stocker for supplying the lovely front cover of this Little Owl.

Recipe of the Month

IngredIenTS:•1 lemon, thinly sliced•4 large chicken thigh portions

(or 8 small thigh portions)•4 tbsp olive oil•3 tbsp lemon juice•2 tbsp clear honey, warmed•225g bulgar wheat (see tip)• cucumber, finely diced•4 spring onions, trimmed

and finely chopped•2 tbsp fresh chopped mint •2 tbsp fresh chopped coriander•Salt and freshly ground black pepper

TIp:Bulgar wheat is a type of wheat grain that has been parboiled, dried then finely crushed. It is similar to couscous but has more texture and bite. You’ll find it in most large supermarkets or health food shops.

MeThod:1. Preheat the oven to 190C, 375F, Gas

mark 5. Push a lemon slice under the

skin of each chicken thigh. Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a frying pan and fry the chicken over a medium-high heat until golden brown all over. Transfer to a shallow roasting tin and arrange the rest of the lemon slices around the chicken.

2. Mix together 1 tbsp of the lemon juice with the honey and pour over the chicken. Roast for 20-25 min-utes until cooked through.

3. Meanwhile, place the bulgar wheat into a bowl and pour over enough boiling water to cover. Leave for 30 minutes until grains are soft. Stir well and drain off any excess water.

4. Stir in the rest of the olive oil and lemon juice and season with plenty of salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add the cucumber, spring onions, mint and coriander and mix well. Serve the hot roast chicken on the tabbouleh with any juices from the roasting tin poured over.

Lemon Chicken with TabboulehServes 4, ready in 45 minutes

This is a great way to turn simple and very economical chicken por-tions into a delicious Mediterranean-style supper. If you have time, make

the tabbouleh a few hours in advance to let the flavours fully develop.

If you’ve never tried growing your own vegetables - why not start this year? There’s nothing better than the taste of fresh vegetables pulled from your own plot - they can be on your plates literally minutes after being harvested.

There are a number of benefits from growing your own. Health for one - not only the extra vitamins derived from your fresh crop, but the exercise you get from the digging, planting and tending of your plot.

You’re out in the fresh air with your hands in the soil - what could be better?

If you’re going to dig a fresh plot, one piece of advice is not to make your initial veg area too big. You must remember the plot will need managing throughout the season - and most of that work will be battling against weeds. In the height of the growing season weeds grow like crazy, and if you leave your plot for a week or so , you can return to find your once neat and tidy area is now thick with vigorous un-wanted rogue vegetation. Many first time growers lose heart if they are faced with a huge area to continually tend, so in the first season, keep it nice and compact. Small is beautiful.

Something else to take on board is water availability. If you decide that area right at the end

of the garden is an ideal spot for your vegetables, do bare in mind that you’re probably going to be a long, long way from a tap - so think about just how long your hosepipe is - and do make sure you get a couple of water butts to catch that summer rain. Another basic point is to make sure your new plot is in a bright and open spot, not under any trees. If you dig you new plot now, many of the trees in your garden won’t yet have a full covering of leaves , so in March your planting area may be nice and bright, yet later in the year you may find you’re trying to grow plants in deep shade.

Once you have dug your new plot, the first thing to do is get some goodness into the ground. A virgin plot will need plenty of digging over to break up the soil and then a good dressing of organic fertilizers to give your new plants a strong start in life. Get hold some well rotted farm manure, this is an ideal addition to the soil - it’s rich with nutrients and will

help add substance to your plot. A scattering of some fish, blood and bone or pelletted chicken manure will get the balance of the soil just right.

There are no hard and fast rules regarding timing with a veg plot. You are at the mercy of the weather. One year you’ll be able to safely plant out your tender plants at the end of April, another year it will be a month later. We find mid May is usually the time to plant out. Do keep a close eye on the weather forecast and be patient. It’s always so soul destroying to plant out a batch of young plants on a warm sunny day in early April, only to find the weather turns and the frost returns to kill them all off.

Next month we’ll take a look at what to grow in your veg patch.

See you soon - happy gardening,

Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russelland all at Askett Nurseries.

Dig For Victory!

Your Health

hip pain…

The hip is a ball and socket joint that helps you move your legs through every day activities such as walking and going up and down stairs. It has a good range of movement, is very stable and rarely dislocates. The ball of the joint which is at the top of the thigh bone (femur) is called the femoral head and the socket, created by the hollow in your pelvis, is known as the acetabulum. Like all joints, it is surrounded by a fibrous capsule which helps to hold the bone together. The capsule is lined with synovium which produces a fluid called synovium fluid. This fluid nourishes the cartilage and lubricates the joint. The hip joint is moved by a number of muscles which allow you to rotate your hip and walk.

What causes hip pain?

Most hip pain has a simple explanation, for example if you have overdone it while exercising. The pain is usually

caused by strained or inflamed soft tissue such and usually clears up in a few days. Pain from the hip joint can be felt in the groin, down the front of the leg and sometimes, in the knee. Hip pain may also be felt in the buttock or on the outside of the hip.

Specific hip conditions

Some specific conditions that effect the hip include:

•Osteoarthritis - This is one of the most common causes of hip pain in adults and may be associated with previous injury or childhood hip prob-lems, although not neces-sarily. It can cause restricted movement, pain and a limp making mobility difficult.

•Hip fracture - If you have had a fall which resulted in hip pain you should seek medical advice immediately as fractures are common around the hip, particularly as we get older or if there is a history of osteoporosis.

•Referred back pain - Pain caused by a problem with the lower back may be felt over the outer side of the hip joint and sometimes in the front of the hip. If scans of the hip are normal then symptoms may be referred pain from the lower back.

•Trochanteric bursitis - Bursae are small pouches lined with

a synovial membrane. They occur where parts of the body move over one an-other, eg where tendons and ligaments pass over bones, to help reduce friction. If you have tenderness over a bony part of your hip you may have an inflammation of the bursa, known as bursitis.

Osteopathy for hip pain

There is a large amount of musculature around the hip and pelvic region and unless the ball and socket have reached a stage where they need replacing, there is much our osteopaths can do to correctly diagnose and treat hip pain. The pelvis may become ‘stuck’ out of position and identifying this is a key element to restoring pain free function. The soft tissue articulation techniques our osteopaths use, provide considerable relief, both mentally and physically. We are also expert at identifying causes of hip and pelvic problems and many people who thought they needed a hip replace-ment have subsequently found what they needed was an osteopath - at TLC of course!

Book Review - Creature Comforts

‘Hang spring –cleaning!’ cries Mole in Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows. The critters are emerging from hibernation, and so are we. We’ve picked a selection of the best novels where animals are calling the shots. What better way to welcome in the warmer weather, than with some tales from the riverbank… and beyond?Watership Downrichard AdamsFiver can sense impending doom. Something very bad is coming to the rabbit warren and fleeing is the only way to save the clan. His brother Hazel knows that Fiver is never wrong and so they embark on the journey of a lifetime to find sanctuary at Watership Down. Crammed full of amazing rabbit folklore, myths, legends and even their own language of ‘Lapine’, we become totally immersed in Fiver and Hazel’s world, carried along on this amazing and perilous journey across southern England. Is that ‘Bright Eyes’ I can hear?War Horse Michael MorpurgoBased on the true story of a horse named ‘Warrior’, War Horse follows the tale of Joey, a young mount who is sold to the cavalry for service in the First World War and the attempts of his previous owner Albert to bring him home safely. But Albert isn’t old enough to enlist and so sets off under his own steam to try and find his beloved Joey. It’s an amazing story of bravery and friendship, set against the bloodiest of backdrops and you can’t help but gallop alongside the intrepid pair.

Charlotte’s Web e.B. WhiteWilbur really is ‘some pig’ and it’s up to a spider named Charlotte to tell the world. Bashful and whimsical Wilbur is horrified to learn that he’s facing the chop. His human protector, Fern, might not be able to save him all on her own and it looks like it’s up to the barn’s resident arachnid to save his bacon. Can Charlotte convince the farmer that Wilbur really is worth hanging onto; how can a spider be that persuasive? Ok, so the clue is in the title but this is a thoroughly charming tale that will have you laying off the sausages, and letting the cobwebs hang around a bit longer, way after you’ve put the book down.Animal Farm george orwellOriginally subtitled ‘A Fairy Story’, this was Orwell’s allegory for events leading up to the Russian Revolution and not a light and fluffy bedtime story for children after all. It tackles greed and corruption, injustice and pig-ignorance, if you’ll pardon the pun. Revolution is in the air at Manor Farm when the drunken layabout of a farmer, Mr Jones, forgets to feed his animals. Pigs Napoleon and Snowball lead the rebellion and bring power to all those on four legs. But in time, the uprising takes an unexpected downturn. Remember: ‘All animals are equal. But some animals are more equal than others’.

White Fang Jack LondonSet in Canada during the gold rush at the end of the 1800s, White Fang is the story of a half dog-half wolf hybrid puppy and his attempts to find his place in the world. It’s an epic story of survival, with White Fang struggling against the violent backdrop of the Yukon Territory and then the equally menacing and threatening life that awaits him as he is adopted by American Indian Grey Beaver and attempts to live as a domesticated canine. White Fang’s new life is just as brutal, as he fails to be accepted by other young dogs and so reverts to being the ‘lone wolf’, detached and isolated in the frozen wastelands. The Art of Racing in the Raingarth SteinAnother dog has his day now and this time it’s Enzo who wants to be reincarnated as a human; he believes in the Mongolian legend that a dog ‘who is prepared’ will come back as a man. Enzo already feels human - he watches television and listens carefully to everything his master, racing driver Denny Swift, tells him. Through watching and listening, Enzo has gleaned that his human family is in trouble and he must do everything in his power to fix them. ‘Heart-warming’ doesn’t come close. For everyone who ever thought of their dog as the fifth member of their family, Enzo’s story of his humans will have you reaching for the tissues before the novel is finished.

Now in its third year, Aylesbury Waterside Theatre continues to boast the finest drama, most dynamic musicals, breathtaking dance, laugh-a-minute comedians and toe-tapping music.

Spring 2013 is no exception! March sees a line-up of heart-warming family productions and unmissable one-night shows from tributes with Wow! A Cel-ebration of Kate Bush to a night full of mischief, magic and frivol-ity with An evening of Burlesque.

Returning with its inimitable sparkle as one of the most popular family shows, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor dreamcoat takes to the stage retelling the biblical story of Joseph, his eleven brothers and the coat of many colours. As Easter approaches so too does the exhilarating Chi-nese State Circus with their explosive acrobatics, remarkable human juggling, sensational contortionist and extravagant costumes to thrill all ages.

goodnight Mister Tom is set to be the perfect Easter treat bringing to life the BAFTA award-winning TV film in a brand new stage adaptation with Olivier award-winning actor Oliver Ford Davies. Set during the dark and dangerous Second World War, the production follows evacuee William Beech as he is moved to the countryside and builds a remarkable, mov-ing friendship with elderly recluse, Tom Oakley.

With comedy from Mock the Week’s Milton Jones and the rude, crude roy Chubby Brown, music courtesy of acoustic guitarists Tommy emmanuel and Martin Taylor, and a circus for the senses with Mother Africa, make sure you don’t miss out on these March must-see shows.

Hi there, my name is Maggie and I’m a 2 year old Terrier.

I love people and I really enjoy being around them but I can be nervous of other dogs so I cannot live with another one. I would like new owners who can work with me around other dogs to show me how to behave. I am very active so would love to go for long walks

with you. I cannot live with cats and I would like a home where any children are aged 6 years or over.

If you are interested in offering me, or any other dog, a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm, or give them a call on 01494 482695.

It would be great to see you!

When I got my placement at Chiltern Directories, my initial thought was “I’m going to be the 15 year old equivalent of Ugly Betty!” I mentally prepared myself for hours of filing, admin and mak-ing coffee. Instead I was treated like an adult. I felt completely at ease for the entire week. Sadly, I wasn’t asked to make any coffee.

Throughout the week, I was trusted with jobs such as proof reading the last issue, labelling envelopes, setting Coralie a million and one tasks for the following Monday and even writing my own articles for this issue. By the end of the week, I felt at ease around my co-workers and had achieved a lot more than I had anticipated. I learnt about the magazine run-ning and editing as well as re-searching and sourcing possible new clients. In my feature article

on Lt Clyde Cosper, I had to get in touch with a company in Florida to get copyright permis-sion for the photo. This was the most challenging and rewarding part of the week as it involved a fair amount of negotiating and emailing over the following week or so but I personally feel the final photo was worth the effort. Since leaving work expe-rience, I have been in regular contact with Coralie and am currently running the Facebook and Twitter pages for Chiltern Directories, allowing me to continue with a company which became so important to me in such a short space of time.

The week itself was a fantastic experience where I learnt a lot about working life but also things about myself that I didn’t know. I’m really thankful to Coralie, Jan and Debbie for allowing me to (hopefully positively) input into something they work so hard for and I look forward to working more with them all in the future.

Thank you,

Emily x

Lt Clyde CosperRisboroughs Unsung Hero

Next time you’re out walking in Princes Risbor-ough, have a look outside the Risborough library. On a brick memorial, amongst the poppies, there is a plaque to one of Risbor-oughs unsung heroes - Lt Clyde “Sparky” Cosper.

Clyde Cosper was born in Dodd City, Texas. He was a pilot during World War 2 at the age of 21, flying a B-17 Plane in the 367th Bomber Group. On 13th November 1943, Cosper and his nine crew members took off in ‘Miriam’ with the aim to bomb German U-boat berths at Bremen. The mission started badly with a bad take-off and an even worse climb for altitude. The plane ran into a thunderhead and was thrown into an unstoppable dive.

While Cosper tried to stop the plane, he made an intercom order for his crewmembers to jump out - all of which survived with minor bruises.

Lt Cosper continued operating the controls as it approached Princes Risborough. Wit-nesses reported seeing the plane coming down fast in a ball of flame, with it passing a few inches above some of the towns’ roofs. Many of the elderly residents thought it was a German attack but local schoolboys recognised the plane as a B-17. As Lt Cosper neared the town, he made the drastic decision to pull up the plane and managed to bring the plane level, saving the town and sadly leaving him no choice but to crash into a nearby field. The full load of bombs stored in the plane exploded on im-pact and Lt Clyde Cosper lost his life. His death was recorded as a normal war casualty worth no more than a few lines in the squadron logbook. His mother Miriam - the planes namesake- received a telegram with the terrible news and eventu-ally killed herself in 1954.

This would have been the end to his story but a little girl, Mau-reen Knopp, met someone on a trans-Atlantic flight 22 years ago and recalled the experi-ence to him. The

person directed her to Gordon Richards, who has since become the historian of Lt Cospers Bomber Group. He was of little help but managed to find a few names for her. Then at a ‘1940’s event in September 1990, Maureen met Alec Kennedy. He was the organiser of the event and the local librarian. He got in touch with reporter Tim Robinson and he in turn “took up the search on behalf of the Bucks Herald”. Eventually the Bucks Herald ran a collection to pay for a memorial dedicated to Lt Cosper. The architect who built the library got in touch with Robinson and offered his services free toward the development of the memorial.

Tim robinson searched for months for clues on him and eventually located two of his crewmembers and his younger brother. In 1989, government permission was given to exca-vate the crash site and some of his personal items includ-ing his dog tags were found. robinson flew over to America and spoke to the brother, Moss Cosper, allowing him a more personal idea of who Lt Clyde Cosper was, completing the story of princes risborough’s most profound unsung hero.

Waddesdon Manor reopens on Wednesday 27th March for 2013, with some interesting events and exhibitions to look forward to for the new season.

Treasures from the ecclesiastical textiles collection will be on display, and in the Dining Room from June Spanish artist Joan Sallas will be producing some astonishing recreations of 17th and 18th century table sculptures using only folded linen. Due to popular demand, the Fantasy from the Fire Maiolica exhibition will also remain in place for another season.

The contemporary theme continues in the gardens for 2013 with some striking outdoor light installations by artist Bruce Munro, starting

with Cantus Arcticus which will be installed in the Coach House at the Stables in March. Inspired by a piece of music of the same name, by Rautavaara, Cantus Arcticus is comprised of 15 abstract bird forms rendered in slender glass tubes occupying the Coach House floor. Light will cascade from above each piece, casting soft pools that change colour in response to Rautavaara’s music, which will be playing in the space.

Also in the gardens, ‘Darning the Land: Sewn’, by artist Philippa Lawrence will take shape from May onwards. Her work is inspired by unseen aspects of the textile collections in store, where she unearthed light-damaged pincushions, darns, mends and labels on domestic linen, and explored the intricate workings of the backs of tapestries and embroideries.

Extending the theme of the taking the exhibitions inside the Manor into the gardens, from June the summer carpet bedding on the Parterre will also reflect a feminine collection, Baroness Edmond de Rothschild’s 17th and 18th-century lace.

For families, Waddesdon is delighted to team up with the National Trust and Cadbury again this Easter and will be

offering a fun trail around the gardens, giant games, and face painting from Friday 29th March - Monday 1st April inclusive.

The ever popular De Jager Tulip Festival also returns for 2013, from 13th - 28th April, and features a dazzling array of tulips on the Parterre. Keep an eye on the Waddesdon Manor website (details below) where we will post regular updates on when the tulip are flowering and at their best.

A new permanent piece for the collection will also be unveiled this year: Xavier Veilhan’s striking red horses and carriage, “Le Carosse”, a version of which has previously been shown at Château de Versailles, will be installed in front of the Manor.

For details of admission charges, event pricing and information please see www.waddesdon.org.uk or call 01296 653226 (Mondays to Fridays 10am - 3pm).
