Weaving Sample September, 2013 By Edna Devai I very much like designing and weaving my own fabric and equally like weaving somebody else’s design that catches my fancy. Nina von Engestrom’s Praktisk Vafbok originally published in 1899 is full with mostly 8 shaft gems and her number 65 has been on my ‘want to weave’ list for some years now. I wanted to try one of my inherited stash yarns, a 20/2 rayon and flax blend, and my daughter asked for a summer scarf to tame the air-conditioning chill in her office. Putting all these things together, a project was born. First I ’translated’ the old style drawdown, than inverted the unidirectional pattern to make it suitable for a scarf and finally added three plain weave ends to ensure an even sel-vage. This last step added two more shafts to the draw-down, but it could be woven with a floating selvage if only 8 shafts were available. The natural colored rayon-flax yarn is in gentle contrast with the UKI Orchid and Cactus 20/2 mercerized cotton yarns which are sadly not manufactured any more. The weaving was uneventful and I finished two scarves with fringes and one scarf with a rolled hem. Warp yarn: rayon/flax 20/2 Weft yarns: UKI 20/2 100% mercerized cotton in Orchid and Cactus Sett: 32 epi; 2 end/dent in a 16 dent/inch reed Take up and shrinkage after wet finishing: 14% in length, and 9% in width Bibliography: Engestrom, Nina von: Praktisk Vafbok. Woven Together: Firestorm
June 21 ‐ August 3, 2013
By Susan Bowman & Beverly Weaver
All in all, PPWG’s exhibit was a big success. Some of the words used were: “spectacular, fabulous, like some‐
thing you’d see in New York City, very moving, a stellar group of weavers and amazing.” The theme was
clearly one that resonated across many regions of the country as well as interna onally. Both the opening
recep on and a later Art Walk were very well a ended and there was a steady flow of visitors on other days.
Weaving and spinning demonstra ons were done on two Saturdays and several sales were made during its
run. Our success can be a ributed to the support of PPWG members, the ar sts who entered, Jeanne Stei‐
ner’s selec ons and Holly Parker Dearborn’s inven ve display of the work.
Out of Town Visitors
It was great to see Michael Rohde and other visitors from out of town at the opening recep on and Juror’s talk. Ar sts who let us know they were coming included Mary Saxton (California) and Elly and Gary Young (Idaho); we were delighted to meet and walk through the exhibit with them.

Educa on
PPWG is a 501 C(3) nonprofit, incorporated in
1959 under the category of educa on.
Our exhibit, Woven Together: Firestorm, does
exactly that by educa ng weavers and the pub‐
lic about the arts of weaving, spinning and dye‐
ing.
Jane Rock designed our color brochure which
gallery goers raved about. Helen Bressler gath‐
ered together the educa onal materials that
you’ve seen in the gallery: books, magazines
and a handout authored by Heather Hubbard.
The other opportunity for educa ng the public
was through demonstra ons that were done on
two Saturdays. Weaving, spinning, ply‐split
braiding, Saga Nishiki and kumihimo techniques
were demonstrated.
NewWeaversandRenewingWeaversStudyGroupBy Edna Devai
This Study Group is dedicated to weavers who have taken their beginning weaving class and are now planning to start their independent projects or have questions about certain aspects of weaving. At the meetings we will discuss a designated topic and leave plenty of time for questions and answers. Topics for discussion will be determined by the questions and interests of the partici-pants. We will meet after the September Guild meeting and revisit the topic of sett, focusing on specific yarns and function of cloth. For future meetings, we will be able to invite weavers with specialized knowledge from our Guild. We will meet monthly, except December and May, after the Guild Meeting in the small class-room at the end of the entry hallway. Plan on bringing a sack lunch. PPWG membership is required. Do you plan to come? Send me an e-mail and let me know! [email protected]

Library Updates From Linda Shaffer
The library inventory, cleaning, and rearranging were completed on July 22nd. This was a day long project
that was completed thanks to Anne Evans, Emily Jones, Sara Richards, Debra Sco , Linda Shaffer, and Beverly
Weaver. We hope the library will now be easier more user friendly A er we completed the inventory,
there were only (3) books unaccounted for but (21) missing magazines. Please check the list below to see if
you have any of these magazines from the library or have any of them in your collec on that you are willing
to donate. Also, please remember that all magazines have a library card and must be checked out. We have
14 books in our rare book collec on. These may be used during library me at guild mee ngs or checked out
with a $200 each deposit. A lis ng of these books will be posted in the library. We are currently ge ng
ready to bind issues of Handwoven; Spin Off; and Shu les, Spindle, and Dye Pot from 2007‐2012. These is‐
sues have been set aside and will not be available for check out.
According to our Standing Rules, library materials may be checked out for a period of one month, a er
that me fine of $5 per book per month will be charged. Members are also obligated to replace or pay for
lost or damaged materials. It is easy to check out materials and then forget to return them, so please check
through your piles of books and magazines for PPWG items. We presently show items that were checked
out as long ago as Feb. 2012. September will be considered a fine free month so please return anything that
you have borrowed.
If you know of any new books that you would like to see purchased for the library, please let us know.
Dona ons to the library in our areas of concentra on (weaving including basketry, spinning, and dyeing) are
also accepted. There are several books in the library that do not meet our criteria that might be interest to
you that will be sold to members at the September mee ng. Money from the sale will go the library.

Sample Schedule
We need volunteers for weaving, dyeing, and spinning samples for the newsletter. Hopefully we will always have a
weaving, spinning, and dyeing sample for each newsletter. As you can see there are still some holes left in the sign
up sheet. If we don't have volunteers, then we won't have samples that month. If you would like to volunteer,
please let sample chairperson know.
For weaving, we need two (2) samples (6” x 6” minimum, 8” x 10.5” maximum). For spinning we need two (2)
samples which need to be butterflies approximately 4 yards long. The two (2) dyeing samples may be on fiber or
handwoven cloth. So the size of the sample will depend on the media.
The newsletter editor needs digital photos of the sample for the newsletter. Please save the photos in .jpg format
and e-mail them to [email protected] . If you do not want to take the digital photos yourself, please
give or send the samples to the newsletter editor to take the photos. Please contact the newsletter editor to make
arrangements for the photos.
Your weaving, spinning, and dyeing descriptions need to be given, mailed, or emailed to the newsletter editor, at
([email protected]). The sample chairperson will print the descriptions from the newsletter for the
sample notebooks in the library. If you have other information for the sample notebooks, please give it to the
sample chairperson at a meeting.
