MFCSP Program UpdatesNEW! MFCSP Care EnrollmentBackground:Presently, Service Delivery entries for the MA Family Caregiver Support Program (MFCSP) include:•Deliveries that are particular to the
program
•Deliveries that are not particular to the program (such as respite services, information and assistance, etc.)

•Lack of consistency in service delivery entries
•Challenges in tracking service units and cost for respite and supplemental services

FCSP FY2013-2015 Assessment Analysis

General Key Findings•70% of caregivers are female•58% of caregivers live with their care
recipient•61% of caregivers provide assistance for 3
or more years•34% of caregivers deliver fulltime (24 X 7)
care•25% of caregivers work full-time jobs
outside of providing care
Lessons Learned•Program Enrollment
▫Data shows trend over the years with 12.5% in 2013, 32.2% in 2014, and 43.6% in 2015 of care recipients NOT being enrolled in any program
•Caring for Those with Alzheimer’s Disease/Dementia▫60% of care recipients have ADRD▫77% of caregivers do not understand how to
care for client▫66% of caregivers experience changes in
personal/social life
Highlights: Emotional Health
•More than 1/3 of caregivers rated their health
as fair
•Those who believed their emotional health changed during the past 3 months, 1/3 felt their health deteriorated

Alzheimer’s Disease Supportive Services Program (ADSSP) Grant
Objective 1. Create and sustain a comprehensive dementia-capable No Wrong Door (NWD) system for individuals with dementia and their caregivers.
Objective 2. Ensure access to a system of culturally competent, high quality dementia-capable Home and Community Based Service (HCBS).
•Advance professional training for Caregiver Advisors.
•Opportunity to build capacity in MA for “Savvy Caregiver.”
The ADSSP Grant and MFCSP
Savvy Caregiver History•Developed in Minnesota in the late 1990s
•Training the caregiver for an unexpected role
Savvy Caregiver• Six weekly classes, 2 hours each
• Format: lecture, discussions, exercises, video clips,
and homework
Who can attend?
• Informal caregivers-family members and friends
• Care-recipient lives at home or plans to return home
• Care-recipient - moderate stage of the disease
Savvy Objectives• Appreciate scope and impact of work
• Increase skills and knowledge
• Adopt a more strategic outlook
• Develop more effective strategies
• Improve self-care skills
• Improve the quality of life of care recipients

Are we doing enough?
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren(National Data)
•From 2000 to 2010 alone, there has been a 7% increase in the amount of grandchildren residing in grandparent-headed households (U.S. Census Bureau, 2014).
•Since 1990, the number of grandchildren living in grandparent-headed households has increased by 30% (Fuller-Thompson & Minkler, 2001; Leonard, 2004).
Characteristics of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (Massachusetts Data)
• 39.7% of grandparents have been responsible for their grandchildren for 5 or more years.
• 38.5% of grandparents are older than 60 years of age. • 43.2% of grandchildren are under 6 years of age. • 64.6% are grandmothers. • 67.9% are married. • 63.5% are non-Hispanic White, 16.4% Hispanic and
14% Black or African American. • 61.8% are currently employed. • The median family income (past 12 months) for
grandparent-households with no parent present is $38,792. *Data not specifically cited is from the U.S Census Bureau, 2010-
