What NCF 2005 says…1

• English does not stand alone. It needs to find its place along with other Indian languages –

an across –the – curriculum

approach



• English can occur in tandem with the first language for learning activities

Reading is a transferable skill



• Language is best acquired through different meaning-making contexts

All language is in a sense, language teaching



• a comprehensible input-rich curriculum that lays the foundation for spontaneous language growth

The classroom needs to be an inclusive space, sensitive to individual learning styles.



• Language evaluation need not be tied to “achievement” with respect to particular syllabi

must be reoriented to the measurement of language proficiency.

• Analysis of Teacher Feedback over 30 Districts• Fixing of a time frame/ladder for English• Streamlining Evaluation for a Skill-based

curriculum• Textbook analysis to

– Correlate and fix competencies in the cards– Link the themes to the milestones in the ladder– Evolve the word list for the respective years


Other criteria for word selection

a. English words that could already be part of the vernacular – like bus, station, market, cycle, shop, repair, phone, school, chair, table, balloon, watch, beach, etc., and

b. English words that are a part of the child’s day-to-day environment and experience, like mother, father, sister, brother, door, cow, cat, banana, house, mango, etc.,

• Motorcycle: All difficult words removed• Tractor: Unfamiliar words not given• Joiners not introduced in Class 1• Train:

• Pictures given clearly; • No. of Questions reduced

• Road Roller: More cards given for Reading Competency• Evaluation Cards streamlined and reduced• Auto: Patterns simplified and changed• Whole Group activities shifted to Rainbow and Circle
