Staffing Update

Kym Hall will be Acting Principal next week while I am attending the Year 6 camp along with the Year 6 staff, Lucas Dredge and Emma Hockey. Trisha Wheeler will teach 5A while Lucas is at the camp.

Student Leaders 2017 At PMPS we acknowledge that students have unique perspectives on learning, teaching, and schooling, and should have the opportunity to actively shape their own education. Student voice is students actively participating in their schools, communities and the education system, contributing to decision making processes and collectively influencing outcomes by putting forward their views, concerns and ideas. Student

Voice allows students to engage, participate, lead and learn. PMPS provides a variety of opportunities for students through its Student Leadership program. At a senior level, we have just completed House Captain elections and we are proud to announce that our 2017 school leaders are: School Captains Sophia Gregorevic and Jared Coburn School Vice Captains Sophia Dell and David Dang House Captains: Beacon: Finn Wright and Zoe Koulaxizelli Hobson: Kyle Wandishin and Abby Eastwood Lagoon: Atticus Cornwall and Zara Burdett

Sandridge: Troy Cotter and Jessica Holt Elections for ONE Junior School Council representative from each shared pair from Year 1 to Year 6 will take place next week.

Excursion Procedures This year there will be a number of excursions and incursions planned for each year level throughout the school. As teachers spend a lot of time organising these activities, we will be strictly enforcing the return dates for permission and payments which are done on Compass. The cut-off dates will be 2 full school days PRIOR to the excursion/incursion to enable effective organisation. We strongly encourage all parents to adhere to these dates as your child will miss out on the activity if you return the permission note after the cut-off date. Compass reminders will be sent in the weeks leading up to the activity to remind you.

What’s happening in our Classrooms?

Thank-you to the 300+ parents who attended our Year 1 to Year 6 Curriculum Information Sessions this week, and to my staff for their very professional presentations. Copies of the presentations are available on the school website. I look forward to meeting our Prep Families this evening at our Prep Picnic.

Year 5 & 6 Swimming Program

This year, our Year 5 & 6 students are participating in an open water swimming and lifesaving program, led by LifeSaving Victoria instructors at Port Melbourne beach. Consent and payment can be made through Compass. Payment must be made at least three school days before your child’s swimming day. Year 1 – 4 Swimming Program

Our Year 1-4 swimming program will take place at MSAC in early term 2. Each class will be involved in six x forty-five minutes sessions over a fortnight. Year 3 & 4 sessions will be held on: April 24, 27 & 28 and May 1, 3 & 4. Year 1 & 2 sessions will be held on: May 8, 10 & 12, and May 15, 17 & 19. Diving Victoria will be involved in one of the sessions and students will have the opportunity to learn how to dive safely into the pool, with more able students having the opportunity to dive from the 1 metre board.

Consent and payment will be notified through Compass at the time.

Our school photos will be taken on Monday 27th February. All students should be at school punctually in school uniform that day. If your child is a little “off colour”, you may wish to bring him/her along just for the photographs. Class teachers can advise you of the approximate time for your class photo. Weekly Staff Profiles

This week we profile our Prep AB teachers, Kristen Cutting and Kate Lewis.

Since finishing her Early Childhood degree in Adelaide, Kristen, our Prep Team Leader and Prep A teacher, has taught in several primary schools within South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria. She relocated to Melbourne in 2007 with her husband Mike and daughter Mackenzie. Four years ago they made the seaside move to Port Melbourne and absolutely love the beachside community. Outside of school Kristen enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She is often on, or nearby the beautiful beaches, either walking or taking photos. Kristen loves travelling both in Australia and also overseas. She has a passion for The Arts and really enjoys being involved in School Productions and Musicals. Kristen is also a huge fan of Carlton and likes watching the footy especially when the Blues

beat Collingwood, which is her husband Mike’s team. Kate, our Head of English and Prep B’s teacher, graduated from Latrobe University in Bendigo with a Bachelor of Education. She commenced her career teaching English and History at Echuca Secondary College. Kate then spent three years teaching Prep at Tongala Primary School, before travelling to the United States to spend a year teaching Kindergarten students in North Carolina. This was an amazing experience, and Kate hopes to undertake further travel around the United States in the future. On returning to Bendigo, Kate taught at Big Hill for six years, working mainly with Prep students. During this time she was also a School Councillor and a member of the school’s leadership team. She has also completed her Master of Literacy through Melbourne University, researching beginning writing development. Kate decided to try a change in lifestyle by moving to Melbourne in 2014 and is enjoying exploring the restaurants and activities city life has to offer. She also enjoys running and has completed several fun runs, as well as a marathon, and her other hobbies include reading, watching movies and spending time with family and friends.

In 2017, PMPS has adopted a new Leadership structure by introducing three Sub-School Leader positions. As Sub-School Leaders, Susannah Nyariri (P-2), Lisa Warburton (3-4) and myself (5-6), are able to provide a vital link between teachers, and offer support and guidance where needed. By releasing teachers on our one day out of the classroom, we are able to provide opportunities for staff to view other teachers in their classroom environment, or to model a lesson for others to learn from. This further improves our teaching abilities and offers time for us to share our professional knowledge. By attending Collaborative Team Meetings (CTM) and working closely with Team Leaders in our Sub-School, we can ensure consistency across our levels and provide a platform for teachers to learn, share and reflect. In our CTM’s, we work collaboratively to analyse data (academic and wellbeing) and use this to drive

our planning, to ensure we are meeting the needs of our students. We are able to create links between students, and provide them with further opportunities to learn and grow. The Sub-School Leader positions have created visible leadership in classrooms, and have encouraged a sense of connectedness for students and teachers. We encourage parents to learn more about our new roles, and the success they have already had on our school environment this year. A flow chart setting out our 2017 leadership structure is attached to this Newsletter. Over the coming weeks, the Newsletter will feature updates from different members of the Leadership Team outlining aspects of their roles. Jessica McPherson

PPPS Fun Run: Friday, 17 March Come and join us between 4pm and 7pm for an evening filled with fun, obstacles, water cannons, music and running! Dinner is easily sorted as delicious choices will be available for purchase on the night. Be on the lookout for our Volunteer roster (we can't do this without support from our community), and our Sponsorship form going home in the next week. Please remember you are responsible for your child on the day. See you there!

House T-Shirts The PFA has just ordered T-Shirts in house colours with the name of the house printed clearly on the back. We aim to sell these T-shirts for under $10. What a great way to bring house spirit to the school. We will sell the first batch the week before the senior school athletics day. We will let you know dates for sale via Konnective. This is not a fundraiser but a way for the kids to connect with others in their Houses and to feel a sense of school and house pride when they are competing.

Next PFA Meeting Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 21st February at 7.30pm in the staffroom. I look forward to meeting many new parents and

encourage everyone to come along and get involved. There is no pressure to put yourself your name against any role, just come along, have a voice on what we can do to add to the school for the kids, parents and teachers. We encourage a representative of each family to take an active role in the PFA, as it gives you the opportunity to meet other school families outside your children’s class, and allows you to showcase your skills should you choose to manage or assist with one of our events. Remember, we aim to keep it FUN, and there is absolutely no obligation

Our AGM will be held on March and you will have the opportunity to nominate for roles on the PFA, if you choose to do so. Mothers Day Lunch May 12

Save the Date Our annual Trivia Night will be held on Friday June 2 in the International Terminal at Station Pier. It is the highlight of our social calendar so make sure that you keep the evening free. Bre McGrath: 0411 228 921
