The school year has gotten off to a great and very busy start.

With only 8 school days in September we were concerned that

it would take longer to connect with our families. Fortunately,

the PTA executive board members met over the summer and

got a head start planning ways to pool our talents and passion

to better serve our students and families. We’re pleased to have

connected with many parents at Curriculum Night (9/30) and

SLAM talent show (10/8 and 10/9). An impressive 25 families

signed up to offer their support for our students through volun-

teering. Special thanks to dance parents Elaine Perez-Pena,

Sharon Charles and Tamica E Taylor for volunteering at our

SLAM event. We’d like to also thank Ms. Taylor for volunteering

to serve as our dance representative on the Budget Committee.

As parents of Seniors (Nicole, also has a Sophomore) we are

committed this year to finding parents that will continue and

surpass the works we started not in only in the dance program

but for the entire school. We urge other parents to get involved

any way you can! See page 2 on ways you can get involved!

DANCING THROUGH COLLEGE & BEYOND

A PARENT’S REVIEW BY NICOLE WRIGHT

On Sunday, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend an amazing event, "Dancing Through College & Beyond" held at the 92Y Hark-ness Dance Center. The event, the brain child of Diane Jacobowitz, the Executive/Artistic Director of Dancewave, (a Brooklyn based non-profit dance education center) was a day designed to give ad-vice to high school students on their journey to college and be-yond. 41 colleges from around the country had representatives on hand to talk about their dance programs. Faculty; department chairs; admissions and financial officers were also on hand as well as professionals who have gone on to do some incredible things beyond dance. These professionals all started out studying dance and now run non profits; do dance therapy; teach; work in dance media and even dance technology. A variety of paths were taken but all started from the love of dance.

Throughout the day there were panel discussions about the various programs and students had an opportunity to take a movement class; attend a college fair; have peer to peer discussions with current students about their school and take in a showcase performance from a number of schools Also - for the very first time; this year DTCB also offered an opportunity for high school seniors to audition for participating colleges. Seniors were able to audi-tion in one location without having to travel all across the country. The audition took the form of a ballet class and a modern class. Our PPAS kids on hand shared it was different than they expected but they appreciated the oppor-tunity to have that experience.

A very special thank you goes out to Mr. Asca for sharing this information with us and mostly for taking time out of his weekend to stop by and check in on our Ailey students. -NMH
