Report on the 3rd International PPAR Conference held at Monte Carlo Report on the 3rd International PPAR Conference held at Monte Carlo March 19 to 23, 2005 March 19 to 23, 2005

The 3rd International Conference on the efficacy and safety of Peroxisome Proliferators Activated Receptors (PPAR) was held in Monte Carlo, Monaco from the 19 th – 25th of March 2005. It was the most productive meeting amongst many other international conferences which I have attended. I am pleased to share with you what I’ve learnt, my thoughts and the essence of the conference.

PPAR could perhaps be the most important medical discovery of the 21st century. It will be used to produce food supplements which will greatly improve overall health and also to alleviate or prevent the pain and suffering from people with diseases such as Hyper-Lipimia, Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Cancer, Inflammation, Cardio Coronary and immune system related disorders.

My reason for attending this conference can be traced back to my scientific research work on PPAR in Cryptomonadales eight years ago in 1997 which was sponsored by International Chlorella Company. Cryptomonadales is one of the subspecies of Green Algae and in the course of my research, I stumbled quite unexpectedly upon the healing properties of this wholefood. My test subjects showed marked reduction in cholesterol levels and improvements in Diabetes Mellitus sufferers. Thus, this research has aroused my interest in the beneficial effects of algae and  focused my efforts on the secret ingredient that effectively lowered blood levels of cholesterol and blood glucose. As my interest and curiosity grew through the years, I had consulted with renowned scientists like Prof Ho Jao-Tung, Prof Hsu Ming-Zu and Prof Chang Zu-wen but we failed to find the ingredient in Cryptomomadales. In March 2002, I had the privilege of meeting Dr Chao Yu-Sen, the Bio-Pharmacology Section Head of the National Health Research Institute of Taiwan (NHRI) in a scientific meeting. Dr Chao told me about his research on drugs that can react with PPAR-γ and he had the facilities, the cell line and the platform to detect PPAR- γ ligand. There are reports that PPAR modulates the blood levels of cholesterol and glucose and this is one of the most important research projects in NHRI. When Dr Chao heard about my “herbal medicine” that contains PPAR, he offered to analyze its active components. Two weeks later, he pleasantly surprised me with the results that Cryptomonadales contains substance(s) that has a strong affinity as a triglitazode (TZD) to PPAR. Dr Chao offered to study the active ingredient in greater detail and it may lead to a major medicinal discovery.
