    The Great Car Race

1 All day the rain had tapped at the window. Karen had already read her favorite book for the

third time and had read her little brothers book to him four times.

2 Read it again, Javier asked, handing her the book.

3 Karen groaned. Just then, Dad walked in from the kitchen.

4 Why are you so gloomy? he asked. Karen and Javier sighed. You need something to do,

Dad announced. If you two would accompany me to the garage, we will set up The Great Car

    Race.

5 Karen and Javier looked at each other in wonder, dropped their books, and hurried after

Dad. First, he took a couple of empty cardboard boxes from the garage and asked Javier to take

them to the living room. Then, Dad asked Karen to get several big, heavy books from the bookcase

and set them on the table.

6 I am going to cut out some cardboard, Dad said. While I do that, Karen, please see if you

can find some clear tape. Karen quickly began searching the desk for tape.

7 Javier, I have something special for you to do, Dad said once the tape had been found.

Directions: With these practice questions, you will show how well you can read and understand

written English. There are two reading selections and some questions about each one. For each

question, mark the letter of the correct answer on your answer sheet.

Finally, Dad piled several books on the table. He taped the top of the track to the highest book. He

    Learning about Sugar Cane

1 What are you reading? Mom asked as she entered Manuels bedroom.

2 Surrounded by some fluffy pillows on his bed, Manuel looked up and said, Im reading an

article about sugar cane. Did you know paper can be made from leftover sugar cane plants after the

    sugar is taken out?

3 Really? asked Mom. What else have you learned?

4 Well, I read Juan Ponce de Len probably introduced sugar cane to Puerto Rico about 500

years ago! said Manuel excitedly. At that time people chewed the cane but did not consume it in as

many delicious ways as we do with sugar today.

5 Those are interesting facts, Manuel, said Mom.

6 The article also has a simple recipe using sugar cane sticks, continued Manuel. I think it

would make a delicious dinner! Can we make it? he begged. It doesnt look complicated.

7 Sure, Mom replied. Read the recipe to me, she said, sitting down next to Manuel.
