Speaker 12 Campus Dean, Dr. David Fitz, asked faculty members at Pitt‐Titusville to come up with an idea that would teach the incoming students the habits that lead to aca‐ demic success. Faculty members Dr. Nancy Tress, Mary Ann Caton, and Jeff Lede‐ bur agreed that putting students in a room and lecturing them about study habits was a boring process and the students didn’t listen. The group came up with the idea of turning the campus into a giant game board. The idea was for it to be a fun way to communicate the habits of academic success in a more interactive way. Immediately following the game, administration, faculty, staff and students cele‐ brated the opening convocation in Henne Auditorium. Opening convocation is a long‐standing academic tradition in American higher education. It is an occasion that brings together all the members of the campus community, not only to mark the beginning of a new academic year, but also to rededicate themselves to the common goals of education and service. The University of Pittsburgh at Ti‐ tusville celebrated the beginning of the 2014‐2015 academic year with a new twist in the orientation process and the opening convocation on Sat‐ urday, August 23, 2014. Faculty, staff and students at Pitt‐ Titusville turned the campus into a giant game board for a newly created event for this year’s new‐student ori‐ entation entitled “Pass or Fail.” Following the processional, led by Dr. Richard Mulcahy, grand mar‐ shal, Pitt‐Titusville President Dr. Livingston Alexander formally welcomed new students to the Titusville campus. Emil Spadafore represented the Pitt‐Titusville Ad‐ visory Board and welcomed new students on their behalf. Campus Dean, Dr. David Fitz spoke to the new students about the Pitt‐ Promise. The Pitt‐Promise is a commitment to civility. It encour‐ ages the Pitt‐Titusville students to Pictured above are students playing “Pass or Fail.” Photo by Tammy Knapp. Continued on page 3
