Did You Complete the 2020 Census Form?

The 2020 Census is underway and households are responding by mail, online, and by phone. The Census is important because the results are used

to determine how much funding local communities receive for key public services and how many seats are allocated to each state in Congress.

The actual Census Day was April 1 but this was not a deadline. The Census Bureau uses this day to determine who is counted and where in the 2020 Census. When you respond, you will tell the Census Bureau where you lived as of April 1, 2020, and include everyone who usually lives and sleeps in your home.

In light of the COVID-19 outbreak, the Census Bureau has adjusted the schedule of operations. The self-response phase, during which every household is encouraged to complete the census, has been extended to October 31. In August, census takers will begin to contact and visit households that have not yet responded.

Library District Election

There will be two positions on the Library District Board of Trustees to be filled for terms beginning January

1, 2021. Candidates must live in the Town of Poughkeepsie.

• 1 Town Trustee – full 5 year term• 1 Town Trustee – unexpired term (4 years)

Nominating petitions may be circulated in accordance with the Board of Election timeline and requirements. For more information, contact Library Director Tom Lawrence at [email protected] or the Board of Elections at [email protected] or 845-486-2473.

As I write this, we find ourselves in an unusual time. A time that is scary for many and frustrating for others. We at the Library District recognize that we provide services that people find vital to their emotional, intellectual, and spiritual well-being. We are continuing to do that but in a digital/streaming/virtual nature that only reaches a portion of patrons. We are successful with that and will continue much of our virtual outreach once we can resume closer-to-normal operations.

We are looking forward to welcoming back patrons to the libraries but it will be a gradual reopening, consistent with guidance issued by the NYS Department of Health and Dutchess County. Once we are able to provide public service, we will likely start with a robust curbside service along with allowing a limited number of patrons in the building. We

will gradually add services as we can and will be pretty rigorous in

our occupancy limits. All patrons and staff will be required to wear masks or face-coverings and person-to-person service will be provided with a Plexiglas barrier in between. Use of public rooms and public programming will not begin until late June at the earliest.

Who knows for how long our “new” normal will be required before we can relax to the “old” normal. Regulating ourselves until then will be a challenge and we hope to have the full cooperation of all who engage with us. As we have seen on Facebook and along the roadside, both patience and kindness can be contagious. We should all do our best to spread it and we will all get through this together.

Celebrating Our Director

April 17 marked the 25th anniversary of Tom Lawrence’s appointment as Director of the Poughkeepsie Public Library District. The years since his arrival have been possibly the most transformational in the history of Poughkeepsie’s public libraries. Tom’s first few years were a time of adjustment but in 2000, the Library District’s Trustees began looking for additional space for both the branch library and the main library.

In 2006, voters in the City and Town approved the renovation and expansion of Adriance Memorial Library and in October 2009, the new facility, with more than twice as much space, reopened. In 2013, voters approved the purchase of a former IBM site on Boardman Road and in April 2015, the new Boardman Road Branch Library opened its doors. The latest expansion came in the form of the new bookmobile that was purchased in 2018 and is now beginning to appear around the community.

According to Tom, the speed with which all of these initiatives were completed is largely due to the enthusiastic support of the Board of Trustees and the community. “Our expansion efforts were always a collaborative experience and that’s primarily why we’ve been successful,” he said.

Tom will be one of the honorees at this year’s Adriance Honors event in October.

May is Mental Health Month

The month of May was first designated Mental Health Month in 1949. Two leading national organizations, Mental Health America and the National Alliance on Mental Illness, join forces this month to raise awareness and break the stigma that often surrounds mental health concerns.

One in five Americans lives with a mental health condition. In addition, the current pandemic has impacted our mental health in a variety of ways including dramatic change in routine, loss of financial and social resources, anxiety about our health, our future, and our loved ones, increased isolation, and loss of our normal support systems. We all need to pro-actively care for our mental health and that of those around us.

MHA (Mental Health America) explores practical tools that everyone can use to improve their mental health and increase resiliency. The Tools2Thrive toolkit is available at mhanational.org/may. NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) invites individuals to connect and share their stories in the national You Are Not Alone campaign. You can learn more and join a discussion group at NAMI.org.

Help is always close at hand. Call or text the Dutchess County HELPline at 845-485-9700, and walk-ins are welcome at the Stabilization Center at 230 North Road in Poughkeepsie. Dutchess Responds during the COVID19 pandemic also offers a wide variety of support at 845-486-3555.

The Patron Who Loves the Library – and Alex Trebek!

Sylvia Lerner hasn’t been to the library in several years but she’s a devoted patron who reads every day and always has a supply of library books. She is one of the many patrons who are visited at home by library staff as part of Extension Services. Recently, PPLD staff member Veronica Martin-Follette sat down with Sylvia and asked about her love of books.

“When I was 12 years old,” explained Sylvia, “my mother let me and my brother walk by ourselves to the library on Bainbridge Avenue in the Bronx for the first time. I read everything! It was my favorite place to be. I grew up in the library.”

Sylvia came to Poughkeepsie as a bride at 22 years old. “We lived on White Street and I would walk to the Maplewood branch. When we moved to Fulton Avenue I walked to the Arlington branch. Everything had to be in walking distance for me, I didn’t drive.”

These days, Sylvia still reads every day. “I love a good mystery, non-fiction, but no sappy love stories! I guess it’s the fantasy, I always feel like I’m someplace else, …like I’m always traveling. I miss going to the library, but now the library comes to me. I am thankful for Elizabeth, Bill, Dawn, and you.”

Veronica knew that Sylvia recently celebrated her 96th birthday so she asked “I know you read a book a day, what else do you do to keep so young?” Sylvia giggled and explained, “Well, I’ve been going steady with Alex Trebek for 35 years, but he doesn’t know it!”

Three Cheers for Art

Thank goodness for artists! During this 'stay at home' time of COVID19, artists have not been idle - they have stepped up to entertain and engage us on Facebook and Youtube with fabulous music, comedy, art, poetry, and inspiration. While some artists may have actually enjoyed the extra time to focus on their craft, there comes a time when the bills have got to be paid, and actors, dancers, musicians, visual artists and others need to have a venue to showcase their work.

The Barrett Art Center, the library’s neighbor on Noxon Street, ‘opened’ a beautiful exhibit of art entitled Earthworks on March 28 with physical distancing in place. They did it with an online virtual opening. You can still view the art on the Barrett website along with their next show (Margins) which opens May 16. Take some time to scroll/stroll at www.barrettartcenter.org. Barrett also has a call for entries right now for an exhibit entitled Paint: Medium as Power in a Time of Crisis. https://artist.callforentry.org/festivals_unique_info.php?ID=7711

Arts Mid-Hudson also found new ways to connect with and showcase local artists over the past month by inviting people to send in poems (in honor of April being National Poetry Month) and

inviting artists to send in virtual postcards from their studios. You can enjoy the poetry and art by visiting www.artsmidhudson.org.

When the colleges and libraries closed, so did their art galleries. But if you're willing to surf around on the internet, you can find many extraordinary art museums and galleries that have opened their online doors for patrons to visit and enjoy the art. We join these and other institutions in celebrating artists and their gifts - literature, ceramics, poetry, dance, drama, music, visual art, architecture, film, graphic design, and beyond. These have enriched our solitary lives immeasurably.

And when society opens back up there is likely to be a delightful abundance of terrific artwork that was produced during this time of seclusion. We can't wait!!

Change of Date

The Friends’ Mah Jongg Tournament to benefit the Poughkeepsie Public Library District is now scheduled for Saturday, September 12, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm at the Boardman Road Branch Library. Table space is limited. Registration form can be downloaded and printed from https://poklib.org/friends/programs-events/

Spring Cleaning

We imagine that many people are using this ‘shelter in place’ time to sort home media collections. Once the coronavirus crisis concludes, let the Friends of the Poughkeepsie Public Library District Bookstore take custody of those hardcover and paperback books, DVDs, CDs, and vinyl records. We’ll do our best to get them into the hands of others who will find them educational, entertaining and enlightening.

What are we looking for? Donations that are in good enough condition for others to enjoy as much as you did. We also welcome the opportunity to consider accepting special collections, such as comic books. Please contact us to share details. Though we appreciate the gesture, we cannot accept encyclopedias, magazines, condensed books, cassette and VHS tapes, books with highlighted or underlined text, outdated travel guides, computer manuals or textbooks. We also cannot accept musty, mildewed or similarly damaged books.

Normally, the Friends Book Store is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and

20,000 books and media are for sale for prices as low as $1. Everything on our extensive, easy-to-navigate network of shelves is donated by the public. Where does the money go when shoppers scoop them up at our Book Store? Sales support the District’s programs and services, as well as its mission of community education and literacy for all. The Friends’ Book Store, located behind the Boardman Road Branch Library at 141 Boardman Road, is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization. We are happy to thank you for your donation with a receipt that can be potentially applied as a tax deduction.

To learn when the Book Store will again accept donations, and reopen for sales, monitor PokLib.org/friends/book-store or Facebook.com/PoughkeepsieLibraryBookstore. Questions? Email [email protected].
