Unit 8 – Health Care Policy Analysis
27
Unit 8 Assignment
Upon graduation, you are hired as a Congressional Policy Analyst for your state’s U.S. Senators. Your first task is to draft a memorandum for the Senators analyzing the factors that would influence the administration of health care reform legislation. Because the Senators are keenly aware of the impact of their vote on the upcoming election, you have been asked to include an analysis of the role special interests groups will likely continue to play in America’s health care system.
Research the Internet for sites related to analysis of the current health care debate. The U.S. Government’s official website on health care reform can be accessed at www.healthreform.gov. (http://www.healthcare.gov/)
28
Unit 8 AssignmentIn addition to fulfilling the specifics of the assignment, a successful memorandum must also meet the following
criteria: Length should be approximately 1—2 pages, excluding
cover page and references page: in 10—12 point font (Arial, Courier, and Times New Roman are acceptable).
Assignment should follow the conventions of Standard American English (correct grammar, punctuation, etc.)
Writing should be well ordered, logical and unified, as well as original and insightful
Your work should display superior content, organization, style, and mechanics
Appropriate citation style should be followed.
Our Discussion this week will focus on nationalized health care. Be sure to answer both questions.
Should employers continue to carry the burden of providing health care benefits to employees, or should the government institute a form of national health insurance instead?
What difference might this make for the ability of U.S. companies, such as automobile manufacturers, to compete internationally when most other developed countries provide national health insurance?
Unit 8 – Topic (National Healthcare)
For 2007, Ford Motor Company estimated that their “health care expenses totaled $2.2 billion, which breaks out to about $1,000 for every vehicle manufactured in the U.S.” Source: Congressional Testimony – Not working (http://www.finance.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/060308fftest11.pdf)
