  MISSION STATEMENT 4-H EMPOWERS YOUTH TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL WORKING

Coin Wars The Iowa 4‐H Foundation will be raising money to promote 4‐H growth in the counties at the Iowa State Fair.                                   

We need your help Here is how the game works: 

The Iowa 4‐H Foundation will host a county endowment coin wars competition from August 8th –12th from 10 AM‐ 5 PM at the 

2013 Iowa State Fair. This competition will be located at the Iowa 4‐H Foundation booth in the Iowa 4‐H Exhibits Build‐

ing. There will be 5 jars, each representing 5 county areas in Iowa. Poweshiek is in the Central Area. 

Rules: The rules of the game are simple‐ fill the jar with coins! Each coin represents points based on its face value.  

Points: 1 penny=1 point, 1 nickel=5 points, 1 dime=10 points, and 1 quarter=25 points.  

Be careful! Paper bills are negative points. 

$1.00 bill= ‐10 points, $5.00 bill= ‐20 points, $10.00 bill= ‐50 points, $20.00 bill= ‐100 points, $100.00 

bill= ‐500 points.  

The area with the greatest amount of POINTS will win the total jackpot.  

The total amount raised will be divided evenly between the counties in that area.  

Battle of the areas‐ who has what it takes to win it all? So join the fun and meet us at the Iowa State 

Fair to help us raise money for Iowa 4‐H’ers! 

Calling All Photographers The Iowa 4‐H Foundation is currently looking to create an ongoing roster of volunteer photographers who would like to play an 

active role in our many events.  Our immediate need is a photographer willing to capture the Iowa State Fair Hall of Fame Event 

(Sunday, 8/18) and the Eastern Iowa Golf Benefit (Friday, 8/23).  We like to have FUN at these events and want to include YOU as 

an extension of our team. Contact the Foundation's Intern, Carter Collins, at ccollins@iastate.edu or 1‐515‐294‐1607 if you are 

interested. Thank you in advance for sharing your talents!  

Awards Changes This year we will be having our Awards Banquet at the end of National 4‐H week in October.  After conversations with 4‐Hers and 

Leaders, it was decided to move the celebration up a month to more coincide with the end of our 4‐H year and the kicking off of a 

new year!  Record book interviews will be in September with the Awards on October 13th.  Senior member Interviews will also take 

place in September.  New this year  ‐ if you have graduated this past spring and would like to do one final record book – we will 

accept them.  They will be judged without an interview.  

National 4-H Week National 4‐H Week is October 6—12, 2013.  We would like to encourage all clubs to select a day during that week to wear your  4‐H t‐shirts to school in support of National 4‐H week. Look for more ideas on National 4‐H week in the Septmeber newsletter. 

National 4-H Shoot Congratulations to Bryce Dekoning, Daniel McCammant and Justin Slaymaker for qualifying and competing in the 2013 National 4‐

H Shooting Sports Competition. Thank you to Jerry Slaymaker for coaching the Muzzleloading National Team.  This past June they 

along with 540 4‐Hers from across the country were in Grand Island Nebraska competing. Results can be found here:

Record Keeping Tips As you work on your record books, particularly your project sheets, you need to keep in mind the difference between a project and an exhibit. You enroll in Project areas – Sewing and Needlecrafts, Beef, Dog, Visual Arts, Photography…… What you take to fair is an exhibit – an outgrowth of what you have learned in your project area.  Projects—A 4H project is an area of emphasis in which a 4H’er enrolls, studies, learns and keeps records. The 4‐H 200 lists 34 dif‐ferent Project areas. Find them listed in the 4H 200 publication  Exhibits—A 4H exhibit is an item resulting from project work that 4H’er has chosen to bring to the fair and have evaluated by a judge.  A project record sheet should cover :  A: What you learned– was it measuring ingredients, how to run the blender, how to use the arc welder, planning a nutritious meal, fitting a calf, comparison shopping, how to shoot a bow, tracking wildlife, programming a robot…  B: The exhibit or exhibits you took to fair —IF you took anything—you may not have or you may have taken 3 things in that project area. For example—you exhibited brownies, a pie and a poster with cost comparison. You do not complete a project sheet for each fair exhibit.  

RECORD BOOKS 

Record Keeping Is Part of 4-H The following are guidelines for recommended record keeping format. Record keeping can also be done on the computer, in a portfolio, video tape or audio tape. Contact the Extension Office for guidelines in these areas.  Cover – green 4‐H cover is available at the Extension Office or you may use a 3 ring binder  

Title Page – a new title page should be made each year.  The title page helps describe you to other and could contain the following:  Picture of yourself.  Your name.  Name of your club.  Designate if you are a Junior, Intermediate or Senior 4H member.  Years in 4‐H.  Grade for the 2012 – 2013  school year.  

Yearly 4H Summary, 4H‐96 – Need one each year. The summary helps you summarize your participation in 4H projects, local group involvement, and at community county, area, and state levels.  

Your Story – This is an overview of your 4‐H year‐what you did and your feelings about this year in 4‐H. Your story should in‐clude the information described in the Yearly 4‐H Summary above.  Followed by Any General Support Material – include pictures and clippings of non‐project activities such as club meetings, 

camps, county and state fairs, etc. Label pictures and underline name in clippings.  4H Project Records – All projects need form 4H‐96 A ‐ Basic, B – Experienced or C‐ Advanced (these forms may be generated 

on the computer, taken off the web site or a hard copy used). If the project has a special project worksheet, you will need to use it also. The financial summary should be completed on the project worksheet and does not need to be repeated on 4H‐96 A, B, C.  All project areas have expenses and therefore need to be included with the Project Records.  List your project goals and accomplishments on form(s).  Behind this form put any information which supports the project. Such things are financial records– all supportive infor‐

mation. Special project worksheets are provided for the following projects: market beef, breeding beef, dairy, dog, cat, horse, market swine, rabbit, market and breeding sheep, swine, poultry, crop production, and photography. All livestock projects must have expense sheets.  

Pictures and newspaper clippings of work done in each project should be placed behind the project record. Label pictures, underline name in clippings.  

Did you participate in clothing selection or fashion revue? include your fair forms in the clothing project area.  You may choose to organize your project book by year or by project as long as it is easily accessible during your interview.  For complete record book information, please visit http://www.extension.iastate.edu/poweshiek/4h

All 4‐H members who were in High School last year are highly encouraged to apply for the Senior Awards. The Senior awards in‐

clude Merit, Leadership and Achievement. You do not need to submit a record book, but rather fill out an application and attend 

an interview. The interviews will be scheduled the week of September 15th. 4‐Hers who are currently Juniors or Seniors also need 

to consider the William Danforth “I Dare You” Scholarship.

Record Book Workshop There will be a record book workshop on August 25th from 1:30 till 3:30. This is designed for new members or                              

members who have not done a record book before. If you are just starting to work on your record book, or have                            

started, but have questions or just not sure how to put the book together… please come by. Please let us know you are coming by 

emailing xpoweshiek@iastate.edu by August 22nd . Location will be decided based on participants.

Volunteer Training For Award Interviews and Record Keeping A special training for any volunteer who would like to help with Record Book Interviews will be held on August 28th  at the Exten‐sion Office from 6:30 till 8:30.  You will learn how a record book should be put together and what to look for when assessing the 4‐Her on their record book and in the interview process.  You will also be able to go back to your club and assist your leader as they work with club members and record books. If you are interested, please talk to your leader or call the Extension Office.  

As you meet in the next couple of months, don’t forget to fill out your club award forms.  They will be due in the office by Septem‐ber 30th.  

Club Awards 

Annually at the Awards Celebration we honor an individual or organization that has contributed to 4‐H.  We need clubs to nomi‐nate someone they feel has given to their club or the county 4‐H program – it can be through time, support or donations.  You know it takes more than the members and leaders to make 4‐H work,. Who has made a difference in your club?

We are looking for at least 2 members from each club to become part of our Council. We have several activities and events 

planned for next year and we have fun planning them and putting them on!! For more information, please contact Renny or any of 

the current Council members. This is a great way to expand your leadership skills !
