Comparing our production with existing texts

First of all we are going to look at our music video…

• We became inspired by the idea of using light in our music video from watching and analysing Example’s ‘Hooligans’ video. It adds vibrancy and intensity to the music video and holds connotations of happiness and enjoyment. From this inspiration we came up with the idea of using Chinese lanterns, which were easy to purchase and set off. They gave a great effect and really added a ‘wow’ factor to the production – particularly used with the overlay of Alice singing.

• After looking at Pendulum’s ‘Propane Nightmares’ existing music video, it gave us an insight on how the tempo of the song can match the pace of the song. In the music video the tempo of the song picks up and the characters begin to run with makes the audience hearts start to beat faster and become more involved with the song. We took this into account and in our music video, sped up the shots of the characters circling around Alice so a more tense and crazy atmosphere was created.

In the original version of the music video there were also shots of the artist singing. We both agreed that this would be a very successful way to show a connection between the artist and the narrative. We included close up’s of Alice’s face signing into the camera to accomplish this.

From these examples we can now see that our music video is very conventional for the drum and bass genre.

Moving onto the Digi-pak…• First of all we included the band on the front cover

which from looking into existing drum and bass digi-paks is very conventional. Take Example for instance, he is plastered all over his album and I believe this is a very good well of portraying the artists personality and encouraging the fans to buy it.

As you can see from Pendulum’s back cover on their album the font used for their track list is very similar to our font. We decided to use this font because it’s really modern and in that sense emphasise the drum and bass genre well.

And finally the magazine advert…• We decided that it was important to include the

album cover on the advert because we were conscious that the advert wouldn’t be clear on what it was trying to market. We came to this decision by researching and analysing existing magazine adverts. Take this dubstep one for example the album is the main focus on the advert.

Next we looked at what text we wanted to include onto the advert, after looking at many different adverts we realised that the ‘OUT NOW’ sign was on all of them. We then felt that it would be essential to put on our advert.
