POWERLIFTINGFORMATBench press is powerlifting’s single discipline and is open to male and female athletes. Athletes compete by bodyweight divisions regardless of functional abil-ity. There are four weight categories per gender, and each team is allowed up to eight athletes in the pow-erlifting competition.

During the bench press, athletes must lower the bar to the chest, hold it motionless on the chest, and then press it upward to arm’s length with locked elbows.

In 1964, weightlifting made its debut at the Tokyo Paralympic Games as a sport for athletes with spinal cord injuries. In 1992, a decision was made to broaden the sport to powerlifting in order include a greater number of disability groups.

Athletes use a specially designed bench press in which their legs are rested on the bench. This feature allows for equal and fair competition between athletes who may or may not have lower limbs.

Powerlifting is the ultimate test of upper body strength, and you can sometimes see athletes lift more than three times their own body weight.

CLASSIFICATIONAthletes compete in different classification categories based on functional abilities, including:
