When flowing water meets with obstacles on its path, a blockage in its journey, it pauses. It increases in volume and strength, filling up in front of the obstacle and eventually spilling past it . . .
Obstacles are Opportunities!

New Thoughts about Change:
The mind processes 50,000-80,000 messages a day 80% are negative! Resistance often arises AFTER actions
toward a new goal are taken Remember the 3 Zones of Change The Comfort Zone The Discomfort Zone The Anythings Possible Zone
The Change Place 2006
New Thoughts about Change:
Acknowledge and honor people for taking the time they need to work though the Discomfort Zone Change can be EASY! Lasting change is possible

Strategies to Break Resistance (more in Module 8)
Assumptions Limiting Beliefs
The Change Place 2006
Assumptions Negative, inner-thinking that keeps one stuck. People think they already know, or can predict, the outcome and act accordingly. People think of the past and assume the outcome will be the same. Same old actions create same old results.
Coaching Approach = banish assumptions! Help people see new actions will yield new results!
Coaching Skills = powerful questions, reframing

Assumptions sample coaching dialogue
Old: Teacher: Im not joining that
committee. We never get anywhere.
Principal: I wish youd join us and help out.
Teacher: Seems people are just griping and we go off on too many tangents.
Principal: I know what you mean.
New: Teacher: Im not joining that
committee. We never get anywhere.
Principal/Coach: I hear that you think it will be the same as the past. What if our process and facilitation were different?
Teacher: You know Im interested in improving things around here. If youre saying it will be different, Im listening.
Principal/Coach: Yes, Im saying that were moving forward with new ways of working.

Discussion Think of various change efforts in your
school. Make a list of assumptions people may have made that impeded the change effort.
What coaching conversation might you have
with that person now? Find a colleague to discuss or jot down your
thoughts in your journal.

Limiting Beliefs The inner critic/voice that limits what one believes Keep people trapped Old mental chatter Examples: I have nothing important to say. That budget will never pass. Ill never get that job.
Coaching Approach = Help coachee notice them and their impact. Let coachee know when you hear one. Coaching Skills = Listening, Reframing
The Change Place 2006
Limiting Beliefs Old: Teacher: Thanks for the
invitation, but Im not willing to chair that committee.
Principal: We can really use your presence.
Teacher: No. To be honest, Ive never led a group and dont want to.
Limiting Beliefs: Im not a leader. I dont have what it takes. I cant do it.
New: Teacher: Thanks for the
invitation, but Im not willing to chair that committee.
Principal/Coach: What is holding you back?
Teacher: Ive never done it. I wont do a good job.
Principal/Coach: I know you have what it takes. What will it take for you to see that?
Teacher: A successful experience, I guess. And a safety net. I hear youll support me.
