Definitions for This IBM Presentation

� Upgrade = new model which keeps the same serial number– Example: POWER6 570 9117-MMA to POWER7 770 9117-MMB

� Migration = new model which does not keep the same serial number– Example: POWER6 550 8204-E8A to POWER7 750 8223-E8B

• Insight: Legal & accounting rules require at least

20% of the original asset to be reused to be

classified an upgrade to the same asset. • IBM uses a serial number to track an asset and

uses an average config definition to determine if

a model upgrade path can be offered.

• Each client has to determine how to classify their new model acquisition. (if an upgrade or not)

Is protecting a serial number important?

� To some clients, it does not matter. To others it does matter.

� Serial number might matter:– Additional documentation/tools for moving to newer server

– Financially works better for depreciation/budget

– IBM software entitlements moves easily to newer server (especially IBM i)

– IBM 5250 entitlements (IBM i) moves easily to new server

– May ease discussions with ISVs if licensing serial number specific

� Serial number might not matter:– Financial impact to depreciation/budget not an impact

– IBM software transferable (with a bit more effort)

– IBM 5250 more transferable now to POWER7 with RPQ

– ISV software licensing not impacted by serial number

• Example: 3.5-inch disk drives (POWER7 server = SFF in CEC)

• Example: PCI-X adapters (Most POWER7 servers are PCIe only)

• IVE / HEA differences to consider?POWER6 I/O drawers

• Put I/O from POWER6 server which you are keeping that won’t fit in POWER7 system unit into a 12X I/O drawer

• Move off HSL/RIO I/O drawers – replace with all 12X I/O drawers• Remove all IOPs. Move to all smart PCI adapters.

This step more limited if you are migrating from a POWER5 server to a POWER6

server. There are no 12X I/O drawers, PCIe slots, SFF disk, etc on a POWER5 server.

� All the newer IBM I/O drawers (12X), disk, SSD and PCI adapters used on POWER6 supported on POWER7 servers (non-Blade statement)

– May need to move 3.5-inch SAS drives and PCI-X adapters

� Older I/O on POWER6 servers, but not on POWER7 servers

– RIO/HSL I/O drawers

– SCSI disk smaller than 69GB or SCSI drives slower than 15k rpm

– QIC tape drives

– IOPs and IOP-based PCI adapters (IBM i)2749, 5702, 5712, 2757, 5581, 5591, 2790, 5580, 5590, 5704, 5761, 2787, 5760, 4801, 4805,
