In heavyinfestations they will taint foods andcause flour to turn grey and increase the likelihood of mould growth. Monitortraps are essential, look for trails in dust.They will normally hide from light andinsecticide treatment can be made aroundmachines and on the structure of thebuilding. Hygiene is important and thesealing of cracks and crevices should beadhered to. Birds nests should be removed,infested stock should be destroyed orfumigated.

BEDBUG (Cimex lectularius)

German Cockroach (Blatella germanica)Adults normally reach 10-15mm in length and are yellow/brown with twolongitudinal dark marks on the pronotum.Wings cover the whole length of back.They hide during the day and normallystay in a localised area, however, whenovercrowding becomes a problem theywill move on in small groups. They arecapable of climbing smooth and roughsurfaces. Invariably found in kitchens &bathrooms, germanica carry their eggcases until nymphs are nearly ready tohatch, they are then dropped and thenymphs normally hatch within 24hrs. Oriental Cockroach (Blatta orientalis)Has different habits to germanica but the same control methods can be used,typically gel baits used in conjunction with residual surface sprays and dusts.

Indian Meal Moth (Plodia interpunctella)10-15mm wingspan, pale yellow/bronzecolour in appearance. Significant problemin stored foods, especially dried fruits andnuts. Larvae cause most problems and canchew through packaging binding foodstuffs together with silk (webbing).Comprehensive monitoring is important,pheromone traps are ideal. Good hygieneis of particular importance, gaps shouldbe left between pallets when storing forvisual inspection and ventilation, this willalso allow for insecticide treatments.

A reddish brown colour, purple afterfeeding, invariably exposed parts of thehuman body are its prime target. Bedbugsare normally 5-7mm long with clawedfeet that enable them to climb roughsurfaces. They frequently hide during theday, in heavy infestations daylight sightingsare possible. Normally found in or arounda bedroom, they hide behind wallpaper,pictures, bed frames, even in telephonehandsets and televisions. Thorough treat-ment is essential. A residual surface spray,dust and ULV combined treatment is veryeffective. Traditionally associated withpoor hygiene, movement of second handfurniture (antiques) and our ability totravel are now becoming significant factorsin the spread of bedbugs.

COCKROACHES

A typical worker can reach lengths of 16-18 mm and is yellow/black in appearance.Widely regarded as a nuisance with apotent sting. They feed on insect larvae,meat and fruit. They are beneficial insectsbut can cause damage to woodenstructures in gathering wood to constructnests. Wasp control can be established byseveral techniques including surface sprays(where possible), aerosols, powders andsmoke generators. Insecticide should beapplied when the nest is at its quietestand precautions should be taken againstpersonal attack from agitated wasps.

Normally around 6-8mm long and have 4 dark stripes along the thorax. Associateddiseases include typhoid and dysentery. Fly spots, which occur when the insectfeeds or defecates can result in finishedproduce being rejected. They have anerratic flight pattern and distinctive wingveins. 500-900 eggs can be laid in anadult life. Hygiene is of great importancein control, insecticides can also be usedwith proofing & EFK’s.

Both the cat and dog fleas areapproximately 2.5mm long and arebrown in colour. Cat fleas are the mainspecies which cause infestations. Carpetsand central heating are significant factorsleading to increases in flea populationsas the larvae are offered an undisturbedwarm environment. Social stigma andbites are an obvious problem. Hygiene is important and regular cleaning of petbedding should be carried out. Insecticidescan be used effectively to offer long termprotection. Pets must be treated with a product registered for that purpose.

PRIMARY FOOD PESTS - MOTHS

Mill Moth (Ephestia kuehniella)20-25mm wingspan. Larvae are whitishwith black speckles. Probably the mainpest in flour mills but also found inbakeries and animal feed plants. Webbingblockages can cause significant problemsin machines. Comprehensive monitoringwith pheromone traps is important. Good hygiene practices and insecticidetreatments should be used as well.

Tropical Warehouse Moth(Ephestia cautella)10-18mm wingspan. Frequently found with imported cargos, infestations have also been reported in cereals and chocolate manufacturing plants.Monitoring is important using pheromonetraps. Webbing is a problem, causingdamage to infested product. Goodhygiene practice is again very important.Storage of products should allow easyinspection and insecticide application.

3-4mm long, dark brown. A serious pestin grain and other hard cereal products.Larvae and adults will feed on the grain.Damage is easy to identify by exit holes in the grain made by emerging adults.White tainting of the product and heatingof grain can lead to germination andmould. Temperatures can reach a pointwhere the insects will die. Traps should be used to monitor infestation and goodhygiene methods are essential. Insecticidesshould be used to treat harbourage points,cracks and crevices etc.
