POVIDONE

´ Povidone is a synthetic polymer consisting of

linear 1-Vinyl-2-pyrroldionone groups.

´

The degree of polymerization results inmaterials of various molecular weight range.

POVIDONE

´ Povidone is usually available in four viscositygrades identified by their K values, whichapproximate K-15, K-30, K-60 and K-90.

´ The average molecular weight of these gradesare 10,000 40,000, 160,000 and 360,000

respectively.

´

The most common uses of Povidone inpharmaceuticals (frequently K-30) are as atablet binder and a tablet coating.

ACRYLATE POLYMERS

´ A series of acrylate polymer is marketed under

Eudragit. Eudragit is trademark of Rohm GmbH

& Co. KG. Darmstadt in Germany, first

marketed in 1950s.

´ Eudragit is prepared by the polymerization of

acrylic and methacrylic acids or their esters,

e.g., butyl ester or dimethylaminoethyl ester.

EUDRAGIT

´ Eudragit is prepared by the polymerization of acrylic and methacrylic acids or their esters, e.g.,butyl ester or dimethylaminoethyl ester.

´ Eudragit RL and RS are copolymer synthesizedfrom acrylic and methacrlic acid esters with a lowcontent of quaternary ammonium groups.

´ These polymers produce films for the delayed

action preparations.

´ Eudragit L and Eudragit S are the two forms of commercially available enteric acrylic resins.

µK¶ IN POVIDONE-K 15 ETC

´ The K value is greatly influenced by the

molecular weight distribution of the polymersample used in the determination.
