A Man Named Al

For a number of years many years ago, Fred and I were fond of throwing an annual barbeque on the Saturday after the Fourth of July holiday. We’d invite all of our neighbors, relatives and friends to spend the afternoon in our back yard eating and playing board games and generally having a terrific time. One of the friends who frequented this annual event was a man named Al. Al was an attorney. He had a pretty buttoned down demeanor. But put him at a card table bearing a deck of Uno cards on a sunny Long Island afternoon at the Brewington residence and he turned into the best possible kind of mad man. Jokes emanated from his lips at lightning speed. He was an incredibly inventive trash-talker. He was so loud with his jokes and comments that his voice filled the entire yard, creating a festive atmosphere for anyone within earshot – and everyone was within earshot. Our other friends began to refer to him as “Uno Al.” One could say without any hint of hyperbole that Uno Al was the life of the party. Heck, you might even say that Uno Al WAS the party. The neighbors, relatives and friends who frequented our annual gathering looked forward to coming just so that they could experience Al’s shenanigans. Al’s endless comic relief was the thing that made the party so sweet. And if he was late to arrive, it seemed that everyone noticed and began to inquire. Then one year, Al couldn’t make the barbeque. Folks who asked about him when they didn’t see him at his usual spot in the yard were crestfallen to hear that Al was not late – he was not coming. Some even opined that the party would not be any fun without Al, even if someone else did pick up the Uno deck and start a game. I recall that I, too, had my doubts about what kind of party it would be without Uno Al loudly holding court in the corner of the shade. But do you want to know what? We all had a great time. It was a different kind of great time than if Uno Al had been there; but it was a great time nonetheless. You and I have spent time having visioning conversations. We have spent Lent praying about where those conversations will lead. Now it is time to begin making some plans. There are many things about our life together that are the ministry equivalent of my friend, Uno Al. Tweaking any of them – or, maybe, even eliminating some of them – might lead a few of us to believe that life at PUMC won’t be as good as it has been in the past on account of any changes that occur. But those who might think that way would be mistaken. You see, this is God’s party. And the party will go on, no matter what. And because Jesus is our host the doings will be sweet … no matter what.

Peace to you all, Pastor Adrienne ___

YOUTH NEWS

[ John Marrine - Youth Ministry Director ] HAPPENINGS

The highlight of April was the Youth Service 'Love Lives Here' worship that was presented to the congregation by our youth. The youth and leaders really worked hard to prepare for this experience. In the weeks leading up to the Youth Service, the practices hopefully enforced that Christ's love needs to live within each of us so that no matter where we are (church, work, school) or doing with friends and family it is always being shown and shared with others. It was also fun to host the Easter Egg Hunt for the younger children as they hunt for their prized eggs in the courtyard.

May will be another busy month. We plan to honor our fallen Veterans at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery again this year by helping to post flags on their graves for Memorial Day. We'll also mix in some fun with a TGIF scavenger hunt and walking the Rail Trail. We are also continuing preparation for our summer mission trips through reflective scripture, team building activities and VBS program creation, as well as the associated fund-raising required for the trips. I hope those who have experienced the returning teams' testimonies in the past will agree that the commitment of the time, talents, and money required in trip preparation is well worth it.

Please refer to the schedule below for May events as well as the youth bulletin board and church website (under the 'Youth/Calendar' tabs). Hope to see you at the events.

Thank you for all your continued support. We couldn't do it without YOU!

FROM MISSIONS/OUTREACH We are excited to report that PUMC Missions/Outreach is sending Alexa Lundin on a NY AnnualConference Mission Trip. She will travel to Mt. Osbourne Church where a previous Mission group, two years ago, had started to build a community hall for the church. The church continues to work on the building and the members of the Mission Team this year will be working toward the completion of the first floor rooms. The team will also be helping with Vacation Bible School while they are there. The trip will run from July 4th to July 11th at Mt. Osbourne Church in Santa Cruz ( St. Elizabeth's Parish) which is in the mountains, south of Montego Bay. Your prayers will be appreciated for a successful trip.

HEALING PRAYER TEAM [Vickey Carroll]

The Healing Prayer Team is here to pray with you for any need, big or small, or for someone you know in need of prayer. ALL IS KEPT STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL. There are several opportunities for Healing Prayer

THE PRAYER ROOM HAS MOVED For a number of years, our Healing Ministry has offered prayers in the little room next to the office. At times, this room needs to be used as office space for church business. In order to have a more healing and spiritual atmosphere, we have moved into the room also used by the Christian Counselors on the lower level. It is handicapped accessible through the outer door and it has a cozier, more spiritual feel. Please feel free to drop in for prayer as needed on Sundays between services. No appointment necessary.

COMMUNION SUNDAYS Healing Prayer is always available during the Holy Communion portion of worship on the first Sunday of the month. Teams are located in the front and back corners of the Sanctuary.

SOAKING PRAYER Soaking Prayer is a precious hour to give to the Lord, and to sit and soak in his presence. No water is involved! This is a time meant to be set aside for you and God − and He will bless this time you carve out for Him. Soaking Prayer is not just for times of crisis; it is for any season of your life. Sit quietly while soft worship music plays, and soak in the presence of Our Lord. You may pray, read the bible, write, or just rest in Him − even sleeping is permitted! Soaking Prayer is available the last Friday of the month at 7:00PM in the Sanctuary. Childcare is available. We hope you will join us!

INDIVIDUAL PRAYER APPOINTMENTS The Healing Prayer Team is always ready to meet with you for prayer. We encourage those who are in need of healing of any kind to come in for a prayer session. No need is too large or too small for God! Simply call the Church Office to request an appointment and a team will be happy to meet and pray with you .

UPCOMING SOAKING PRAYER DATE May 26th and June 30th
