I was polite enough but very disap- pointed and did what I wanted to whether they liked it or not. There are other places to eat and we went elsewhere. Perhaps they were just having a bad day but I will not go back there again. My presence and my money are volun- tary contributions that I will decide when and how I will share and spend them. Why am I telling you this story? The word that comes to mind is hospital- ity. We are not that differ- ent from a restaurant. Peo- ple are “hungry” and have needs. They stop by our church and look over our staff, surroundings, and perhaps the “menu” we give them. How are they greeted? Do we have ade- quate facilities and pro- grams? Are we serving them well? We may have only that one opportunity. I am proud of the efforts of our staff and volunteers. I thank you for your willing- ness to serve and the wel- coming spirit you have for newcomers. We live in a consumer-minded and con- venience-oriented society. There may be shortcom- ings to that mentality (and I think there are many) but that’s the world we live in. We must continually strive to not just maintain but improve what we do and how we serve – not just the already convinced but the seekers who will come through our doors. There are plenty of other “restaurants” in our com- munity. I pray for God to bless them all but I believe there is a place and need for POUCC. We are in the business of making disci- ples. Since we get some clothing and lin-ens that are a little too tired for thestore but still very usable, a call wasmade to the Farm Workers Assoc.office in Pierson and several carloads of clothing, shoes, and disheswere transported to the office inAugust in time for school.

There are more than 7,000 farmworkers and their family membersin five counties that receive assis-tance from that one office. It is nowa one-man office because of theeconomy with a few volunteers thathelp him with his Friday afternoondistribution of food and clothes.

We had a flood of stuffed animalsthis summer and some of them arebeing held for the children and willbe transported to Pierson closer toChristmas. So keep your donations

coming!! Also remember that all items(except electronics, TV’s and large furni-ture) are welcome including jewelry –don’t forget to include lone earrings andbroken pieces or those missing stones. Some of these are repairable or can bematched with another lone earring.—Submitted by Harriet F. Rogers

From volunteer, Mary Ann Stew-

I feellike we have a little ministry all our own inthe Thrift Store and it feels good.”

Susie Greiff, Asst. Treasurer

Deacons CornerIn POUCC, we have a wonderfulchurch. In many respects we havea “Big” church in a small pack-age. The fact that we have twosuccessful times to worship —Traditional and Con-temporary– is in itselfa real accomplishment. Many churches withonly one servicewould like to haveboth but cannot find aworking formula. Wehave spoken to churches that arewell financed that have been un-successful at having both. Wehave spoken to large churcheswith broad memberships whohave also been unsuccessful athaving both.

What is it about our church thathas led to our success? The an-swer has to be our dedicated peo-ple. In common to both servicesis our pastor, Dr. Bill Wassnerwho leads each with his messageand guidance. Yet, each service is

different in how they are pre-sented. The Contemporary Ser-vice has the Worship Team led byTerry Zinke. Here the music con-veys real life heartfelt messagesthrough music that allows the con-gregation to participate with sing-

ing and an openability to expresspersonal feelings. Inmany ways ourWorship Team canbe looked upon asan Associate Pastorwith its dedication

to sharing of God’s messagethrough music. Plus, there aremore children in the Contempo-rary Service who help remind usall of how simple life can be whenwe are young. The TraditionalService has the Choir led by Dr.Tom Naus. Here the choir shares amultitude of messages written tomusic by composers from yester-day and today. This service is alsowhere the congregation can singtraditional hymns, many of whichwere sung when many members

were young growing up in the church. This service is more traditionally struc-tured in format yet it is no less inspir-ing.

In both services, we all recognize theneed for personal reflection on our in-dividual lives and that Sunday worshipis our chance to join with others, wholike ourselves, also desire a time duringthe week when we can share a little bitof our personal lives with others whocare.

At POUCC, we are indeed very fortu-nate that for a small church we have amixture of wonderful people who areboth members and friends. Severaltimes a year it is good for us all tocome together, where those from theContemporary and Traditional servicescan see, talk and be with each other inone single “church family”. It is thissharing and caring that is so very im-portant.

The Deacons are dedicated to assuringthat both services are as meaningful aspossible to all who attend and that weare truly one church in God.

FACILITIESOur church building andgrounds require constant atten-tion and caring. The lawn ismowed professionally but otherareas that require attention mustbe handled by church volunteersmanaged by the OperationsTeam. If you anything thatneeds attention, either cosmeticor damaged, or anything thatneeds to be added or removed,or if you have an idea that couldimprove our facilities andgrounds, please contact thechurch office or one of the Op-erations Team members.

Several times per year we havea church clean up day that fo-cuses on both the outside and

inside. The volunteers that comeout for this day work hard whiledoing a badly needed and neces-sary job. Several of our membersvolunteer time on a weekly basiswhere they have taken on a spe-cific task, such as maintainingthe grounds around our PrayerGarden. Some members havehelped paint critical outside areaor have used special sealant paintto block or prevent water leaks insuspect areas. Others haveworked on the sprinkler systemthat helps keep our grassy areasgreen and healthy.

In Florida, everything outsideeither grows or disintegrates dueto weather conditions. It is a con-stant battle. Inside areas alsohave their fair share of wear andtear from usage.

In summary, if you want to help ei-ther outside and inside, there is some-thing for you to do and you will begreatly appreciated. Please contactthe church office.

LAND CLEARING

Pastor Bill has presented the ChurchCouncil with many excellent ideas forutilizing the wooded church propertyjust west of our parking lot. Thechurch owns this land and clearing itwill open up many new opportunitiesfor things we can do within thechurch and also in things that can in-volved the greater community aroundus. These uses will be made more for-mal as time goes by but for the mo-ment the land will be cleared of allbrush while leaving the larger trees inplace. If you have ideas or want tohelp, please call the church office.

CHURCH WEBSITE

The POUCC website is an exten-sion of our church to not onlyour church members & friendsbut to everyone else seeking tolearn more about us. Our websiteis listed on the national UnitedChurch of Christ website and itscan be found by simply search-ing on the Internet for “Port Or-ange UCC”.

In many respects, our website islike a missionary reaching out tothe world. It shares our story, ourmission and tells others who weare as a church body. It is also adiary of where we have been byshowing who we are and whatwe do in pictures and music.

Often times, as individuals, we

cannot attend every event. Perhaps youhave missed an event and heard about itlater. Wherever possible we will put ahighlight on the website, especially if itincludes our children and our membersdisplaying talents at special events.

If you have pictures taken at a specialevent that could be meaningful to oth-ers in our church, please share them bycontacting Bob Brewster or sending thepictures by email to him [email protected].

The long term goal is to make our web-site interactive so that it becomes a dayto day working tool for enhancingPOUCC church communications. Fur-ther, it will also carry our message tothe outside world that POUCC is here, listening and working because “God isStill... Speaking”.

Jim had an awful day fishing on the lake, sitting in the blazing sun all daywithout catching a single one. On his way home, he stopped at the super-market and ordered four fish. He told the fish salesman, "Pick four largeones out and throw them at me, will you?"

"Why do you want me to throw them at you?"

"Because I want to tell my wife that I caught them."

Sounds

Fishy to

me!
