The Faculty of Social Sciences is based in the stunning state-of-the-art ICOSS building – the Interdisciplinary Centre of the Social Sciences. Situated at the heart of the university campus, ICOSS is the hub of faculty activity, providing facilities and events for both staff and students.

The faculty comprises a large and diverse grouping of thirteen departments. These are: Architecture; East Asian Studies; Economics; Education; Geography; Information Studies; Journalism; Landscape; Law; Management; Politics; Sociological Studies; and Town and Regional Planning.

This rich and exciting disciplinary mix encompasses world-leading research and education. It also embraces a strong commitment to professional practice in many disciplines. This combination makes the faculty unique among its peer institutions in the UK.

Excellence in research, research training and supportThe faculty is consistently rated highly as a world class centre for social sciences research. In the last research assessment exercise (RAE2008) the majority of the faculty’s submissions were ranked in the top ten in the UK, and five were in the top five.

We provide expert supervision of research degrees, and the University and faculty have been leaders in the development of high quality research training. This is demonstrated by all relevant faculty departments achieving Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) recognition for postgraduate research training.

We see this training as vital in helping your realise your full potential. So you will be offered an individually tailored research training programme that will provide generic

transferable skills together with the specialist training that will allow you to develop your thesis.

You will be supervised by experienced academic researchers with strong track records in the successful supervision of research students. You will typically be assigned two supervisors, a lead and a second supervisor, who will help and advise you throughout your studies.

The University and Students’ Union provide English language support, cultural events, societies, and other support. There is also a 5-day residential orientation programme for international students prior to induction week. This provides an opportunity to meet staff, fellow students, and learn more about Sheffield.

Such excellent research, research training, and support have enabled the faculty to build a large and vibrant community of research students. There are currently around 500 students registered on research degree programmes within the faculty.

A cosmopolitan cultureOurs is a cosmopolitan research community, with around 200 of the faculty’s total research student population being international students. We place special importance on their role in the life and work of the faculty.

Students from all over the world have been attracted by our excellent reputation. Past and present students include those from the UK and Europe, plus over 35 other countries.

Why come to Sheffield? Although Sheffield is a major city, and still developing, it retains a sense of community. This is a friendly, safe, affordable and welcoming place to live.

In Sheffield you can enjoy sophisticated fast-paced city life and yet in 20 minutes you can be in the middle of the beautiful Peak District National park.

Established in 1905, Sheffield is now one of the best UK universities for high quality research and teaching. Ranked highly in The Sunday Times guide and Virgin Alternative Guide to British Universities (written by students), it also boasts the best Students’ Union in the country.

The Faculty of Social Sciences

“The University of Sheffield is one of the best universities within the UK, located in a beautiful and enjoyable student city. It offers excellent academic facilities available all day and night at its unique Information Commons. It is amazing to be surrounded by that much history yet at the same time study in modern environments with high-tech equipment. Even though I didn’t have the chance for a previous visit, now I am happy for not missing out the opportunities and achievements waiting for me during my studies in Sheffield.”
