Film poster review: Caterpillar In this film poster, the main focus is on the old woman who is positioned in the centre of the film, this is effective as it portrays her as the protagonist of the film. The old woman is positioned behind a spinning wheel, this implies that the old woman is fond of historical traditions, by positioning her behind it it is effective as it keeps her identity hidden which will intrigue to audience to find out more. The dark colours mean that the costume of the old woman isn’t revealed, this is effective as it means that her identity is kept to a minimum which means the audience will be intrigued to find out more about her and therefore will be encouraged to watch the film. Dark colours and low key lighting is used, the use of the dark colours create a mystery which is a typical convention of drama genre films.

The dark colours and low key lighting are around the border of the poster, this is successful as the bright white light coming through the door highlights the old woman as it acts as a spotlight, making her the focus point of the poster.

The title of the film ‘Caterpillar’ doesn’t give too much away towards what the narrative of the film could be, although this is usually successful the word ‘caterpillar’ could mean anything and therefore the audience aren’t given any information of what the film will consist of and therefore won’t want to watch it. On film posters the title and picture usually have some connection, however on this film poster there is no connection. Due to the title not giving much information away it isn’t a very good selling point of the poster, it implies that film and production company aren’t successful.

Both the title and the credits are in white, this is effective as they both contain important information and by positioning the white on the dark background it makes the written text stand out. The colour white symbolises peace, goodness and innocence, this creates the impression that the old woman is just an ordinary typical old woman whose hobby is the spinning wheel. However due to the genre of the film being drama, the sense of an uneasiness is created as the woman cannot be a peaceful innocent person in a drama genre film, therefore there must be hidden information about the character, this is effective as it will intrigue the audience to watch the film.

In the background on the poster is a manikin which is covered in some sort of web, from the title ‘Caterpillar’ it implies that the manikin is covered in silk-spinning caterpillar. Due to the title of film being caterpillar it shows that the silk-spinning caterpillar will play a large role in the narrative.
