Physical Property: A trait of matter that can be measured or observed with the senses.

Issued Date: September 1, 2011 Due Date: September 30, 2011

TEKS Objective: The student knows that matter has measurable physical properties andthose properties determine how matter is classified, changed, and used. The student isexpected to: 4.5(a) Measure, compare, and contrast physical properties of matter, includingsize, mass, volume, states (solid, liquid, gas), temperature, magnetism, and the ability to sink orfloat

Assignment: ALL fourth graders are REQUIRED to make poster on properties of matter.Students will select 3 objects and describe their properties in detail. They will then place thoseobjects and list the properties on the poster.

Materials: 3 objects / ruler / balance scale (available in the lab) / library or computer toresearch properties of matter

Requirements: _____ (5 Points) Student MUST present their work on a poster. Student shows

creativity, organization, spelling, overall appearance, and parent signature.

_____ (3 Points) Full heading must be on the back of the poster and located onthe upper right corner of the poster (Student’s First and Last Name, Teacher’sName, and Date).

_____ (5 Points) Poster needs to have a visible title that can be read from adistance “Properties of Matter”.

_____(50 Points) List at least ten properties of matter and defined them(texture, mass, length, states of matter, density, volume, smell, color, shape, width, weight, hardness, flexibility, solubility, magnetic or nonmagnetic)

_____ (30 Points) Select 3 objects and present/label their properties of matterfor each object.
