From International Cancer Imaging Society Meeting and 15th Annual Teaching Course (ICIS 2015)London, UK. 5-7 October 2015

Learning objectiveThe objectives of this poster are to describe the methodol-ogy and curriculum content employed by a senior medicalstudent elective entitled “Multidisciplinary ThoracicOncology.” This elective provides students with experiencein a focused area of oncologic practice and is valuable tothose pursuing careers in a variety of related fields.

Content descriptionThis month-long elective employs a flipped classroomapproach with didactic teaching materials that are deliv-ered on an interactive online platform. Materials includerecorded videolectures with pre-lecture, post-lecture andembedded multiple choice questions (MCQs); case stu-dies with a sequential, question and answer learningapproach and embedded MCQs; a pre-course quiz anda post-course exam. These didactic materials are viewedby students at their own time and pace, typically duringoff hours. During daytime hours, the students rotatethrough relevant clinics, seeing patients and reviewingtheir cases with attending faculty, and occasionallyassisting in surgical/interventional procedures. The areascovered include Medical Oncology, Pathology, Pulmo-nology, Radiation Oncology, Radiology and ThoracicSurgery, focusing on patients with lung, esophageal andother thoracic neoplasms. Each student presents one ormore patients at the weekly Thoracic Tumour Boardmeeting. The capstone project is a written case study oran oral presentation based on a relevant topic. Commentsfrom students who took this elective during the past yearindicated enjoyment of: “full engagement in the learningprocess and the patient care team” and “obtaining a well-rounded, multidisciplinary understanding of the presenta-tion and treatment of these patients.”
