The Adopt-a-Unit Cajun Dinner/Silent Auction was lovely event. So much fun, good music, singing, happy faces, etc. I’m so proud of Chad and the Marines. The food was in the words of Chad “delicious”, thanks to all the prep and hard work of Vicky and Uncle Al. Special Thanks to all the gift basket donors (too many to list), to those who worked hard getting basket donated and those who purchased gift baskets. Bravo Zulu to Sara and Chad who did an incredible job putting the baskets together and tending to the paperwork. Thanks to the “Stage Crew”- you know who you are. Thanks to those who decorated- Melissa and crew. Thanks to those who help serve- Linda and Sandy. And how about our Service Officer, yet again, lending a helping hand. Lastly but not least, and Thanks to the clean up crew (Fernando/Jason) on Sunday. By the numbers, we blew our target fundraising goal of $5,000 out of the water by 65%, raising thousands of dollars on the Silent Auction. Hopefully, we can do it again next year. It was a great event.

From the auxiliary

The VFW Auxiliary started with a small group of women who wanted to serve veterans. Today, we have more than 475,000 male and female members and more than 3,800 Auxiliaries representing all 50 states.

Membership in the VFW Auxiliary is an excellent way to show your support of America’s veterans. If you are a member, we encourage you to participate and to ask someone else to join as we work to improve the lives of America’s veterans, active-duty service members and their families and communities across this great nation.

From the senior ViCe Commander

Congratulations to our newly elected and appointed Post Officers. This is an interesting time of year for the Post because with a new leadership team, comes fresh new ideas.

This past year, Commander Bill Morrison recognized the need to streamline Canteen business. Besides operational changes that will prove financially beneficial, he empowered the House Committee Chairman to update canteen operations and layout of the bar area, thus making it more efficient. Additionally, by following through with the solar panel project this summer will demonstrate its effectiveness by lowering our payments to SDG&E. Special thanks to the Auxiliary for completing the work.

Commander-Elect Don Stonecipher, and his team should have no problem continuing the forward momentum the Post has gained under Commander Morrison. If we continue with events that are open to the public, i.e. the Friday “Burger Burn” and Karaoke Nights, Special Event Dinners, etc. we may be able to generate their support and gain more new members.

In Comradeship,

Vernon DuMoltFrom the Junior ViCe Commander

Comrades,

The Post had another strong month in April thanks to the giving spirit of many fine Americans…Post members, Auxiliary members, and the general public alike. Thank you to all those who gave outstanding Poppy donations throughout the month. We can’t ever rest on our past achievements, though, as we must keep an eye on our purpose of supporting Veteran’s in need. With that in mind, we are looking for an even better May.

I’m also happy to mention that in addition to the funds raised during the Silent Auction, our relief fund also got an added boost by the merger of the Rancho Peñasquitos post as they added their existing funds to ours. These extra funds will greatly assist us as we move forward in our mission.

Cheers,

Bill Kimble

Bravo Zulu of the MonthThe Bravo Zulu of the month is awarded to The stage crew…Leroy and Tom for their hard work prepping the stage, Jason for donating the carpet and labor, and Karaoke Tom for his spectacular karaoke set up. The updated stage looks amazing gents!

From the Chaplain

In light of the fact we recently celebrated the great feast of Easter, I’d like to take this opportunity to share a brief reflection on the true meaning behind the season. This is not about bunnies and candy. Easter not only is the foundation of the Christian faith, Easter also invigorates our hope. Hope draws our eyes upward, where God resides. Saint Paul encourages us:

“Therefore, if you be risen with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is sitting at the right hand of God. Mind the things that are above, not the things that are upon the earth. For you are dead and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ shall appear, who is your life, then you also shall appear with Him in glory” (Colossians 3:1-4).

God bless.

Barry CroninFrom the surgeon

Comrades,

Huge shout out to everyone who helped out for the Adopt-a-Unit dinner! The evening was truly remarkable and on behalf of the SATAF I would like to say thanks to Fernando, Melissa, and crew for the decorations, Sara and Richard for everything they did for the auction (plus those that donated all the wonderful items!), Vicki and Uncle Al for the fantastic meal and Linda and Sandy who delivered the plates and cleaned, and lastly, the unsung hero of a dishwasher, Bud.

Movie quote of the month (free beverage of choice to the first person that corners me at the Post with the movie title of origin):

“There’s two kinds of people, them goin’ somewhere and them goin’ nowhere. And that’s what’s true.”

From the Quartermaster

Hello everyone,

Since we elected new officers in April, the Election Report has been completed and sent in. Also, the mass installation has been scheduled and the associated fees have been paid, so we are complete with everything required.

The Adopt-a-Unit dinner and Silent Auction was a raving success. We made about $8,000 that night as a result of all of the effort that went into it.

Our new Point of Sale (POS) system is ready to go and is being implemented on May 1st. After a lot of coordination and effort getting it operational, we expect this to save us money and also help us get a better understanding of the Canteen operation.

We will be processing 15 new members that were voted in during April. Richard is keeping me busy with this paperwork.

Alan Helton

From the Judge adVoCate

Greetings Comrades,

I would like to congratulate and thank Don S., Bill, Sal, Alan and Don B. for standing up and accepting their respective offices to which they were elected. This will be Don’s FIFTH time around as Commander. Comrades, that is Dedication with a big capital D.

Many of you may have heard that the Rancho Peñasquitos Post will be rejoining us at the Poway Post via a merger. I know all will make them feel welcome.

Just a quick reminder, the FRA will be hosting the Memorial Day Ceremony at Deerborn Cemetery on 27 May. The VFW Post 7907 has a role to play in that ceremony, please mark your calendar and come out and support our Post and our brother Veteran Organizations.

Now that the weather is warming up, I hope to have a “Cold One” at the Post with you.

From the house Committee Chairman

I would thank Tom, Leroy, and Jason for the hard work done on the stage. Tom and Leroy spent several days installing new lights, reworking the electrical, prepping the stage, and pulling thousands of staples. The previous installer REALLY liked staples! Jason graciously donated $1,800 in material and labor to re-carpet the entire stage.

In May, we will be starting a Karaoke and Dog night at 5pm on Saturdays. We will have Chili Dogs, Mustard Dogs and any Dog in between. Please join us for a great night!

Please also remember that every Saturday we have a working party to clean and work on various odds and ends. Remember that volunteering is good for the soul and does a body good!

Thank you for your service!

Military Special Credits Work (Social Security)When veterans apply for retirement or disability benefits, Social Security checks their records. If they have qualifying military service, they get credit for additional wages for their military service. These credits are added to the veteran’s lifetime earnings record — not to the veteran’s monthly benefit check. But because Social Security uses lifetime earnings as the basis for figuring out a person’s retirement benefits, the credits can ultimately raise the monthly payment.

During World War II, members of the armed forces weren’t covered by Social Security, meaning they didn’t pay into the system and couldn’t get benefits based on their service.

After the war, with veterans returning to the civilian work force, Congress granted them extra credits on their records for the time of service. This was intended to help compensate for the low wages they’d been paid while in uniform and to offset the loss of civilian earnings that would’ve helped them qualify for or improve their Social Security retirement benefits.

In 1957, members of the military on active duty were covered by Social Security and paid Social Security taxes. In 1988, Social Security coverage was extended to people on inactive duty in the reserves. But both changes retained the practice of giving veterans a little bit extra in wage credits.

The credits are awarded in differing amounts according to certain time periods and length of service. The following applies to people who were on active duty or active duty for training:

1940 through 1956. Veterans with active service during World War II (defined as Sept. 16, 1940, through July 24, 1947) or the post-World War II period (July 25, 1947, through Dec. 31, 1956) are credited with an extra $160 in Social Security earnings for each month of military service.

1957 through 1977. Veterans of this period are credited with $300 in additional Social Security earnings for each calendar quarter in which they received active duty basic pay.

1978 through 2001. For every $300 in active duty basic pay, these veterans are credited with an extra $100 in Social Security earnings, up to a maximum of $1,200 a year. But if you enlisted after Sept. 7, 1980, and didn’t complete at least 24 months of active duty or a full tour, you may not be able to receive these added credits.

In 2001, Congress eliminated the program. Thus, military service in calendar year 2002 and later years no longer qualifies for the special credits.

Apply: According to Social Security, you don’t need to. They will be automatically added to your earnings when you apply for retirement or disability benefits.

However, it may be wise to ask your Social Security representative whether your work record shows that credits have been added to your account. Meanwhile, you may be asked for proof of your military service. If so, you may need your DD-214 to show proof for serving in the qualifying periods.

As always your Service Officer stands by to serve you...
