From the Desk of Vice Chancellor
It gives me immense pleasure that ever since establishment of Department of Computer
Science, it has made tremendous progress both in academics and research. The Department aims at
providing quality education, a distinctive combination of academic excellence and professional acumen
to provide a solid foundation to the students for their professional as well as personal development in
their life-time .I am happy to note that the Department has been successfully running professional
programmes namely MCA, M.Tech. (Networking and Administration), M.Tech.(Web Technologies) ,
PGDCSA and PGDNA. It is also actively engaged in advanced research and doctoral programmes.
PGDCSA program introduced in 1982 is an introductory program for students who want to become
skillful and knowledgeable IT professionals. The programme gives in-depth knowledge about computer
fundamentals, elements of system analysis and design,, operating systems, internet, computational
techniques, file and data structure, networks and the core concept of programming. It aims to provide
specialization in computer application with technical, professionals and communication skills. It gives
students the career prospects of becoming System Analyst, Software Engineers, Training faculties, R&D
scientists, EDP manager and many more. One can use these PG Diplomas with their respective
bachelors degree to acquire jobs that require computer knowledge.
PGDNA, introduced six years ago, prepares the students to become specialists in areas of local area
network installation and maintenance, data communication techniques, network administrative tasks and
network security.
I wish success to both the courses.
Dr. M. N. Patel
(Vice Chancellor, Gujarat University)

Gujarat State is well known for the entrepreneurial skills and business acumen of its people all over
the world. Ahmedabad, the biggest city of Gujarat, is a vibrant and prosperous city which excels in
every sphere of creative and economic activity, besides being a historical city. This historical city of
Ahmedabad was founded on the banks of Sabarmati in the year 1411 A.D. by King Ahmed Shah,
after whom the city has been named. The city has a rich and flourishing heritage, cultural vibrancy
and modern industries. Ahmedabad is also known for the freedom movement and inspiring leaders
such as Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel. It was from the Sabarmati Ashram located here that
Mahatma Gandhi launched his famous Dandi March.
The city of Ahmedabad, which was known as the Manchester of East due to its innumerable textile
mills, has since diversified into various other sectors such as Information Technology, Pharma
sector, etc. The city is fortunate to have a very inspiring intellectual environment through well-
known institutions such as the Indian Institute of Management, Information and Library Network
(INFLIBNET), National Institute of Design, National Institute of Fashion Technology, Physical
Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad Textile Industries Research Association, Institute of Plasma
Research, Space Applications Centre etc. These institutions have given an international colour and
culture to the city. Among these institutions, Gujarat University also finds a place of pride catering to
the higher education needs of the students of Gujarat.
The Gujarat University
The Gujarat University was conceived in the nineteen twenties in the minds of public-spirited and
learned men like Gandhiji, Sardar Patel, Acharya Anandshankar B. Dhruva, Dada Saheb Mavlankar,
Kasturbhai Lalbhai and many others. However, the University could come into existence only after
the achievement of independence in 1949. The University was incorporated under the Gujarat
University Act of the State Government as a teaching and affiliating University. This was done as a
measure of decentralization and reorganization of University education in the then Province of
Mumbai.
During the courses of its life of more than five decades, the University has been the establishment of
seven more Universities which were carved out of the jurisdiction of the Gujarat University, viz.,
Sardar Patel University, Saurashtra University, Bhavnagar University, South Gujarat University,
Gujarat Ayurveda University, Gujarat Agricultural University and North Gujarat University. Gujarat
University is the largest university in the state catering to the needs of the higher education which is
evident from successfully running 350 colleges. In addition to this, the university has to its credit 34
4
post graduate departments offering more than 150 different Post graduate, diploma and certificate
courses.
The motto of University is a Sanskrit subhashita from Bhagvad Gita “Yoga Karmsu Kaushalam”,
which means “Balance in life is accomplished through proficiency & mastery in work.” It is the
largest and biggest University in state comprising of 19 districts and has a radius of 1000 kms.
Gujarat University is an affiliating at Undergraduate level, while it is teaching one at Postgraduate
level. Indeed, the responsibility for postgraduate instruction has been statutorily given to the
University and accordingly it has evolved a plan of coordinated instruction under the direct control
and supervision of the University so as to ensure efficient and diversified instructions.
The University has pioneered in developing curriculum and courses in emerging areas since its
inception. Realizing the need of qualified computer professionals, the Gujarat University had
initiated Post-Graduate Certificate and Post-Graduate Diploma course in Computer Science and
Applications way back in early 70’s and Master of Computer Application in 80’s at Rollwala
Computer Centre.
Vision
The vision of the Gujarat University is to be a centre of Excellence, providing value based quality
education, efficiently with financial sustainability, leading to socio-economic welfare of the society
through enrichment of human capital.
Mission
Empowering students through modernized syllabus.
Innovation in teaching
Promotion of research, consultancy & extension for the benefit of the society
