The 25th April - The Day of Liberty

It is known as The Liberty Day. It celebrates the transition between the military dictatorship of that period and the 2nd Republic. The government of Marcelo Caetano was put down by the Carnation Revolution. It was named this way because during the Revolution innocent blood wasn’t shed. The soldiers had carnations offered by the people in their guns instead of bullets. The carnations represented a change, a new life!

Luís de Camões, one of the poets who wrote about the most heroic adventures of our people. He wrote a very famous epic poetic work called Lusíadas, in which he describes the expansion of the Portuguese territory to other countries during the Discoveries Period in the XV century. He died on the 10th June. That is why this day was chosen to honor the writer and all the communities discovered by our ancestors.

The 5th October

Since the 5th October of 1143 Portugal had a monarchic regime. At the beginning of the 20th century people started feeling unsatisfied and wanted to be able to choose their rulers. After the murder of the king and the prince, people organized a revolution which took place in Lisbon on the 5th October 1910. Manuel de Arriaga was elected as the first President of Portugal.

On the 5th of October we celebrate the implementation of the Republic.

The 1st November - All Saints Day

As there are more Saints than days of the year, the church decided to honor them all in just one day: the All Saints Day.

On 1st November the kids knock on every door asking for “the cake”, traditionally a sweet broa, which is a kind of sweet corn bread. This tradition is similar to the American Halloween.

With the disappearance of the Portuguese King D. Sebastião at the battle of Alcácer Quibir, there was the problem of succession to the throne. So, D. Filipe II, the King of Spain, became the King of Portugal and of Spain. It caused some discontent of the Portuguese people.

The 25th December – The Christmas Day

The Portuguese population is mainly Catholic, so the Christmas Day is celebrated on the 25th December, during which Jesus Christ was born, according to the Christian religion. On the 24th December in Portugal it is usual to have a special family supper and after the meal relatives and family members exchange presents. It is a tradition to serve codfish or turkey and, as a dessert, sweet creamy rice or rabanadas, which are a kind of sweet fried toasts dressed with sweet sauce. Christmas is a festivity whose essence is peace and family.

THE LEGEND OF BODO

Bodo was born when a Catholic woman, D. Maria Fogaça, organised a procession which headed to the Chapel of Nossa Senhora Do Cardal. At the end of the procession the woman made two cakes to give to the priest. The cakes became very big and she couldn’t take them out of the oven. She ordered a servant to solve the situation. The servant got into the oven and put the cakes right and then got out of the oven without getting burned. This was considered a miracle.

What is Marta`s opinion about BODO?

In my opinion, Bodo is a fantastic celebration because we can meet lots of people, listen to different singers,

and also be with our friends. This happens on holidays, in July so that everyone can enjoy it.

We can also try new experiences, for example, we can enjoy different things at the amusement park, like

carrosels.

During Bodo celebrations , Pombal receives a lot of people, from different countries and of different

nationalities.

Me and my friends spend a lot of time there, because it happens only once a year and it's something

wonderful.
