BOWLS – LAWN (MENS) Liaison Director: Ian Stromborg

The final of the 2018 Major Singles Championship was played in July between Jamie Clifton and Peter Chown. What a game it was, all those who witnessed this game say it was one of the best played at Spence St.. The game went for a marathon 38 ends and was only won on the last end, at which point either player could have won. When play started on that LAST end the score was 29-27, and after 6 of the LAST 8 bowls had been played, the lead had changed hands and was now 29-31 with each player just 1 bowl each to play. They don’t

come much closer than this. Lets look at some stats. Ends played 38, number of times lead changed, 7, biggest lead(s) six on 20th end, 8 on 22nd., It can be a cruel game, one player won 24 of those 38 ends and now here he was with his LAST bowl in his hand and holding 3 shots for 31-27 and watching as opponent, Peter Chown stepped up to play his last bowl. All Pete could see was Jamie Clifton’s bowls surrounding the jack, three of them were “in the count”. Pete, now down, the 2017 defending champ, had a quick look at the position he was in and decided it was “kill or be killed”. He let fly with a bowl that was never gunna be short and it skittled “all the counters” and when it stopped it was - - JACKPOT!. He had cleared the head and now held a couple of shots lead again, and left the jack in an impregnable position.

“What the…?” thought Jamie, ‘I’ve played my butt off” and Jamie now had to play the LAST bowl of the match, he’d had a great game up to this point , would that magic touch hold out now when he needed it most? Unfortunately for James the magic ran out and with an almost impossible shot on his hands he fell just short and it was over, Pete had won on this last end. All those stats said, JAMIE! he had won the ends, had the big leads and was playing brilliantly all the way, but never doubt a champion. Pete fought back through all those stats and came out on top, again. What a game. Jamie gracious in defeat, was first to congratulate the 2018 CLUB CHAMPION.. A CLASSIC! (Thanks to Rocky. and J.W. for eye witness info).

Presidents' Day was held on 4th August with about 80 members and guests present. It is a day when we can say thanks to a lot of guys for the help they provide in the running of this great club. Among the guests were Workers' Club President. Daryl Melham, Liaison Director Ian Stromborg and fellow RWC board members, some officials from “The Royal”, some Zone 12 officers, as well as visitors from our cricket club and Cabramatta, Lidcombe and Padstow B.C’s. Awards were handed out to the following members.

From the Royal, Awards to our club Secretary Richard Upston and to Dave Raper. From Zone 12 special award to retiring umpire, President Len Dowse and to Publicity officer Merv Elder. Please note, all jokes aside, our entrepaneur Richard Upston did an outstanding job as Emcee of the event. He is the Ricky Gervais of RWC. B.C. and, seriously, all jokes aside, oops, already said that.

Two finals were played on 11th August. One was the Minor Singles between Geoff Brittain and Laurie Wilson and the other was the Veterans Singles between Rod

50 The Journal Nov / Dec / Jan

Sports ReportsClifton and Ross Graham. In the Minor singles Geoff led all the way and won in convincing style over Laurie who didn’t get his game together until late in the match when he made a charge scoring 11 shots on the last few ends but all too late and Geoff ran out a winner 31-20. The Vets was anyones game up to the halfway mark 6-6, but then the defending champ Ross slowed up as Rod piled on the pressure with accurate bowling to take out the title 31-20. A changing of the (old) guard.

At the A.G.M. on 9th Sept. among other things, the members welcomed ADRIAN HART to the position of life member to our bowling club. He has been a long time member and tireless worker and has held nearly every position on the bowls committee as well as being an umpire. This measure has been previously approved by the R.W.C. board of directors and was carried unanimously at our annual meeting. Congratulations Adrian. The mixed pairs final was played on Sunday 9th Sept. between Janice Obrien/Peter Chown v. Pat and Geoff Tate. The Tates won the first end but by the 10th end they trailed Jan and Pete 5-11, at the 11th end Geoff was thinking the whitewash was starting as Jan and Pete were holding SEVEN shots. With 1 bowl left Pat called to Geoff “your going to have to drive to save a few”. Driving is NOT one of Geoff’s best shots but he looked to the heavens and let one fly and killed the end. The game changed and by the 14th end Tates led 16-14. At the 21st (last) end Tates had the lead 19-17. Janice rolled the jack to the tee then put her shot 18 inches behind , both skips were building the head going bowl for bowl. Geoff tried to block, it was wide and with his last shot, Pete had to drive and he picked up 1 shot, not enough. Geoff didn’t have to play his last shot, a 19-18 win to the Tates. Good Final.

Since our 2 clubs merged on July 1st 2017 the club has been playing social events every Wed. and Saturday, with some exclusions for pennants , rain and other reasons. We have had social events on 48 Wednesdays with an average of 38 players, with the highest number 50 and the lowest 24. We played 40 Saturdays with an average 23 players. Highest 34 and lowest 12. We have given out over 500 meat trays for these events and most REGULAR players got their fair share of these goodies. However some got a few more than others and I am sure no one will begrudge their fellow members an extra tray or two, or would they?. Have to keep it short as I am running out of ink.

Players with 9 min. EXCLUDING RAFFLES, were; B. Downes. G. Ostermann, R.Kennedy and D. Gallant. A. Hart got 10, D. Mitchell, R. Hastie and K. Cooper won

11, Ken Mcdougall won 12, K Sayers 13, (ink is very low) L. Dowse 15, H. Childs 16 and with the most on 22 wa--- sorry out of ink.

The Annual General meeting was held on 18 July at which meeting the following Office Bearers were re-elected – President, Trevor Heaslip; Secretary, Christine Benham, Treasurer, Ray Benham; Vice Presidents, Paul Kelly and Richard Shun Wah and Assistant Secretary Lindsay Le Bas. Daryl Melham, Col Heaslip, and Terry Semlitzky were appointed patrons of the Club in recognition of their commitment and interest shown in the Club over many years.

Registrations were held in August, with numbers of players signing up declining – a trend happening everywhere. 6 senior sides have been affiliated (same as last season) and U12, U14 and U16 teams in the new “drop-in competition” jointly with the Bankstown District Cricket Association and Fairfield Liverpool Cricket Association. Competition commenced on 15 September and we are having mixed success, but having lots of fun in the process! The still new “Stage 1” format for U10/11 players commenced on 20 October, as did the Junior Blast and Master Blast formats for the little ones.

Selections for the Bankstown District Cricket Association’s Junior representative sides are in process and we expect some of our fine young players will again be selected in those teams.

It is not too late to register to play cricket with The Workers for the 2018-19 season. Players of all ages and abilities (juniors and seniors) are most welcome. For enquiries, please contact Chris on 9773 7157.

GOLF (MENS) Liaison Director: John Rodwell

All readers are invited to visit the Revesby Workers' Mens Golf web site at rwcmensgolf.org for information about our Club, news, upcoming games and dare I say it, insightful and witty summaries by the publicity officer for each game combined with photos and results.

A very dry winter saw a consistently large roll-out of players for every game, with the highlight events being the 4-Ball-Best-Ball (4BBB) Matchplay Championship (May-Jul) and the Singles Matchplay (Aug-Sep).

Congratulations must go the 4BBB team of Ron Knebusch and Ken Harris, who defeated the team comprising George Lattouf and Ken Little (3&2) in the final at Rosnay golf course. The Singles Matchplay is almost over, with the last two players remaining, Ryan Cassin and Allen Foster, scheduled to play the final sometime in late October.

The concluding months for 2018 will see golfing events played out over many great courses (Penrith, Bankstown, Shell Cove, Bathurst, Cabramatta, Liverpool and Georges River).

Event highlights will be the International Cup, Presidents Cup and Guzzlers Cup, as well as inter-club challenge matches, the Lawson Cup at Penrith and the Revesby versus Canberra Labor Club at Bathurst.

And don't forget the BBQs managed by our Social Secretary, Ryan Cassin, are coming up after selected golf games to make the day more delicious and inviting :-) An extra topping will be the annual "Pizza" meal after the game at Georges River in early December.

The last game of the year will be the extremely popular 2-Man Ambrose Christmas Day event at Bankstown, followed by a huge lunch and plenty of fluids to revitalise our fond memories of all the good days and fun we had throughout the year - so happy golfing

MARINE RESCUE Liaison Director: Dennis Hayward

Marine Rescue Hawkesbury has been kept busy this year so far with our volunteers putting in a staggering 8186 hours, and with the official boating season starting October long weekend, we expect to get even busier. A mild winter has meant more boaters out and about year-round, which leads to more calls for assistance. So far this year we have completed a total 82 assists which involved 307 people. Of these incidents, 12 were serious, where loss of life or a significant loss of property was involved. There were 2 medical evacuations of residents from the riverside communities. Others involved vessel tows to safety, including a tow of over 20 nautical miles; several flat batteries and a pump out to prevent a vessel from sinking completely.

On top of these, we have assisted the Rural Fire Service in their continued efforts tominimise the risk of bush fires in the local area. There was a fire at Coba Point. Located at the mouth or Berowra Creek, access was by river only. We transported more than 30 firefighters and their equipment in and out of the area. We also evacuated two folks who had medical problems.

Some new initiatives have been introduced to further improve the safety of our local communities. Along with our normal Boat Licence courses and First Aid Courses, this year has seen greater involvement with the Local resident groups, helping develop emergency evacuation plans and Medical support to our 'Water access" only residents. To this end we have introduced an extensive "Find Me On The River" program, which identifies local water access only properties and how best to reach them in times of emergency. This important information to improve response times will be shared with other emergency service colleagues.

The coming months are already shaping up to keep our volunteers busy. The Unit will be helping a number of upcoming large events by providing safety support. These include the Hawkesbury Canoe Classic on the 27th and 28th October, and the Bridge to Bridge powerboat / Ski races on the 24th and 25th November.

Over the Christmas and New year period, we will also be assisting with spectator control at the start of the Sydney - Hobart yacht race on Boxing Day; and the New Year celebrations. These activities, our normal duties plus additional river safety coverage during January will see us busy indeed!

PHYSIE AND DANCE Liaison Director: Dennis Hayward

The year of 2018 has been fast paced and a great success so far for Revesby Workers' Physie and Dance (RWPD). We hosted our own Interclub competition this year as a successful fundraiser for our club and its members. We also entered into two other Interclub competitions in August at Randwick and Inner West.

This year in September we entered a 7-8’s and 13-15’s team into the National Team Competitions. The girls in both teams worked collaboratively and produced a high quality performance that everyone was proud of. Congratulations to the 7-8’s team who placed 5th in the competition. The girls’ demonstration of consistent hard work and perseverance reflected the great qualities that our club represents in physie and dance.

We would like to congratulate everyone who performed at the Champion Girl and Champion Lady competitions this year and wish those moving on to compete at the National Finals later in November and December the best of luck.

This year has been a year of growth, hard work and passion for physie and dance at RWPD club and although it is coming to an end we look forward to the new challenges, syllabus and members that 2019 will bring for our club. If you are interested in coming along to RWPD Club in 2019 please contact us at [email protected]

REVESBY WRITERS' Liaison Director: John Rodwell

Another year is almost over and our plans for 2019 are almost completed. An anthology of poems and stories written by the members of Revesby Writers is being prepared for publishing early in the year. Congratulations to the following members, Jo Tsang, her story ‘The Lost Soul’ received a Commendation in New England Writers’ Centre Thunderbolt Prize for Crime Writing, John Coyne’s poem ‘Two Much’ published in Bush Poets Association Magazine September issue, a collection of Dianna Jabbour poems received very positive review, Carney Vaughan and Simon Kaddiss have entered short stories competitions recently.

A very special ‘thank you’ to Kevin Murphy who writes the reminder that the Revesby Writers meet on the first Saturday each month, published in both The Express and Torch.

Karen Lane was our guest speaker in September. The topic was ‘Writing Your

Memoirs'. This was a very popular theme as several members are writing their memoirs. The workshop was enjoyed. Karen answered many questions and her passion for assisting writers was greatly appreciated.

From our Webmaster, Simon Kaddiss; Contact information for the Revesby Writers can be found on the group’s official website at www.revesbywriters.com on this site you will find where we meet, time of meeting and an email address where you can contact the group. Our email is revesbywriters @ gmail.com

Our group invites writers who wish to meet writers to join us. Writing is a solitary task. Sometimes encouragement is needed or the opportunity to read a story aloud to an audience. You may have stopped writing or perhaps have never started but you know you have a story to tell. Each month a topic is suggested for a short story or poem to be read at the next meeting, this sometimes is enough to renew the desire to write. You will be welcome at our February meeting, 2019, Macarthur Room, 20 Dixon Lane, commencing at 1pm.

Parking is available and the meeting room is very close to the Revesby Railway Station. On behalf of the members of the Revesby Writers, I thank John Rodwell and all who have assisted the members of the ‘Writers Group’ to achieve our goals for this year. Best wishes for 2019 from all our members.

TENNIS (JUNIOR) Liaison Director: Dennis Hayward

Members of Revesby Workers' Club played tennis enthusiastically during Term 3, 2018. There were some interesting changes to a format of the Saturday Morning Junior competition, which played a round robin format in each of 5 divisions and doubles play in the last 2 weeks of term. We can also report on some of our more advanced players who played the Mid-Western Competition.

Saturday Morning Juniors:As a trial, the junior committee of Canterbury Bankstown Tennis Association Inc., changed the format of the junior competition for term 3. There is a survey at the moment to all players asking the parents/children’s opinion on the new format of singles only in round robin format. I cannot say at this stage, but I believe the majority preferred the team format as per usual and that may return in term 4. A decision is to be mad in the school holidays I believe.
