Durability was greater challenge than the strength of concrete.

Special attention to durability aspects of concrete inIS:456-2000.

Incorporation of mineral admixtures such as GGBS, Flyash, Silica fumes ... incodes mainly to enhance the durability of concrete.

IS:456 also permitted the use of PPC and PSC.

Concrete - developments

Infrastructure development is undergoing transformation. It has beenrecognised that the use of OPC alone or using OPC in high percentage inconcrete is not only coming in the way of Greener construction (Sustainability)but also leads to many disadvantages in particular with the following:

a. Drying shrinkage

Low Carbon Concrete (LCC)

The contribution of construction industry to the total Green House Gas (GHG) emissions is

estimated at approximately 8%. With the annual production of concrete worldwide is

approaching 200 billion tonnes.

Research study shows that, use of Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag, low

carbon concrete can be produced, reducing carbon dioxide emission by about 60%

and at the same time quality of concrete is improved.

GGBS manufacture typically releases 52 Kgs of CO2 / MT which is about 5% to that of

OPC production.

CONCLUSIONS

JSW products have enormous potential to extend a structure’s useful service life becauseit improves concrete durability in areas susceptible to corrosion resistance, sulphateattack and alkali silica reaction.

Improved durability characteristics help further reduce life-cycle costs, lowermaintenance costs and makes concrete more sustainable.

The concrete produced from PSC & GGBS is lighter coloured with higherreflectivity.

Lighter coloured pavements produce higher visibility and improved safety.Buildings and pavements that are lighter in colour reflect more light and thus helpminimize the ‘heat island’ effect which in turn reduces the energy needed forcooling.

PSC is used to make durable concrete structures rather than Ordinary

Portland Cement. It has been reported that PSC has represented high

percentages of total production in many countries in recent years.

West Germany – 24%, Belgium – 32%, France – 42%, Netherlands – 55%

PSC has been widely used in Europe, and increasingly in the United States

and in Asia (particularly in China, Japan and Singapore) for its superiority in

concrete durability, extending the lifespan of buildings from fifty years to

hundred years
